  • The line-start permanent magnet synchronous motor has a high efficiency and an advantage in constant speed operation regardless of the effect of load variation. However it is difficult to predict the performance of characteristics accurately, because of the unbalanced starting torque with the initial starting position of the rotor and the generation of a break torque. In this paper the dynamic characteristics of the line-start permanent magnet synchronous motor are described and compared with those of the squirrel-cage induction motor through the simulation to find the characteristics of the permanent magnets and the rotor bars in the line-start permanent magnet synchronous motor.

  • The interest in permanent magnet synchronous motor is present in a wide area of applications, ranging from high-performance servo drive to line-start application[1]. The are mainly two reasons for this trend: first low rotor losses and second the foiling prices of high-energy magnets. In this paper the dynamic characteristic of the line-start permanent magnet synchronous motor are described and compared with those if the squirrel-cage induction motor through the simulation to find the characteristics of the permanent magnets and the rotor bar in the line-start permanent magnet synchronous motor.

  • Three phase squirrel cage induction motor is generally adopted as a traction motor to drive high speed trains because of its robustness for surrounding environment and easy maintenance. In the design of traction molar, reduction of weight is very important in order to reduce kinetic energy to accelerate the vehicle. Therefore, in this paper, design variables of a preliminary designed traction motor to minimize its weight is determined using the optimization technique. Before the optimization process, rotor slot number is determined to reduce vibration and noise by the analysis of magnetic force. As a result, a design example to reduce weight by 12% than that of the preliminary designed motor is presented.

  • This paper describes the effects of rotor-bar broken in induction machines. The analysis has been made on 7.5kW, 4P, 1,768[rpm], three-phase induction motors in a healthy and broken-rotor bars fault conditions at rated loading conditions. The effects of the rotor-bar broken, magnetic force are investigated by finite element method (FEM) and experiment. The results can be useful for real-time on-line monitoring of an induction motor.

  • The induction motor is given a great deal of weight on the industry generally. Therefore, the fault of the induction motor may cause the fault to effect another parts or another faults in the whole system as well as in itself. These are accompany with a lose of the reliability in the industrial system. Accordingly to prevent these situation, the scholars have studies the fault diagnosis of the induction motor. In this paper, we proposed the diagnosis system of the induction motor. The method of diagnosis in proposed system is extracted the feature of the current signal by the wavelet transform. These extracted feature is used the automatic discrimination system by the neural network. We experiment the automatic discrimination system using the three faults imitation that often generated in the induction motor. The proposed system have achieved high reliable result with a simple devices about the three faults.

  • In this paper, the optimum shape design of stator slot of induction motors for iron loss reduction is proposed. To obtain the flux distribution in induction motors, 2-D finite element method with voltage source is employed. The iron loss is calculated from the iron loss data given by the iron manufacturer. To calculate the sensitivity of iron loss to shape variation, the sensitivity analysis of discrete approach is used. The proposed algorithm is applied to a 3-phase squirrel cage induction motor. The nodes at stator slot boundary of the induction motor are defined as design parameters. By controlling these parameters under the constant volume of iron, we can minimize the iron loss. Furthermore, the stator copper loss is reduced by increasing the slot area. So the stator slot area is determined at the point that the summation of iron loss and copper loss of stator is minimized. Since the constraint of constant volume of iron is nonlinear to the design parameters, the Gradient Projection method is used as an optimization algorithm.
