  • In this paper, we propose a interval censored regression spline model with a variance function (non-constant variance that depends on a predictor). Simulation studies show our estimates from MCECM algorithm are consistent, but biased when the sample size is small because of boundary effects. Also, we examined how the distribution of $x_i$ affects the converging speed of these consistent estimates.

  • The assessment of machined surface is difficult because the freeform surface must be evaluated by surface fairness as well as dimensional accuracy. In this study, the machined freeform surface is modeled by interpolating the data measured on the machine tool into the mathematical continuous surface, and then the surface model is improved with the parameterization to minimize surface fairness. The accuracy reliability of the measured data is confirmed through compensation of volumetric errors of the machine tool and of probing errors. Non-uniform B-spline surface interpolation method is adopted to guarantee the continuity of surface model. Surface fairness is evaluated with the consideration of normal curvature on the interpolated surface. The validity and usefulness of the proposed method is examined through computer simulation and experiment on the machine tool.

Spline finite strip method incorporating different plate theories for thick piezoelectric composite plates

  • In the present analysis, the spline finite strip with higher-order shear deformation is formulated for the static analysis of piezoelectric composite plates. The proposed method incorporates Reddy's third-order shear deformation theory, Touratier's "Sine" model, Afaq's exponential model, Cho's higher-order zigzag laminate theory, as well as the classic plate theory and the first-order plate theory. Thus, the analysis can be conducted based on any of the above-mentioned theories. The selection of a specific method is done by simply changing a few terms in a 2 by 2 square matrix and the results, obtained according to different plate theories, can be compared to each other. Numerical examples are presented for piezoelectric composite plates subjected to mechanical loading. The results based on different shear deformation theories are compared with the three-dimensional solutions. The behaviours of piezoelectric composite plates with different length-to-thickness ratios, fibre orientations, and boundary conditions are also investigated in these examples.

Quadratic B-spline finite element method for a rotating non-uniform Rayleigh beam

  • The quadratic B-spline finite element method yields mass and stiffness matrices which are half the size of matrices obtained by the conventional finite element method. We solve the free vibration problem of a rotating Rayleigh beam using the quadratic B-spline finite element method. Rayleigh beam theory includes the rotary inertia effects in addition to the Euler-Bernoulli theory assumptions and presents a good mathematical model for rotating beams. Galerkin's approach is used to obtain the weak form which yields a system of symmetric matrices. Results obtained for the natural frequencies at different rotating speeds show an accurate match with the published results. A comparison with Euler-Bernoulli beam is done to decipher the variations in higher modes of the Rayleigh beam due to the slenderness ratio. The results are obtained for different values of non-uniform parameter ($\bar{n}$).

  • This paper presents to create a SAC(Sectional Area Curve) using an ANFIS(Adaptive-Network-based Fuzzy Inference System). First, it defines SACs of parent ships by using a B-spline approximation and a genetic algorithm and accumulates a database about SAC's control points. Second, it learns an ANFIS from parent ship data, which are related with principal dimensions and SAC's control points. This process is to model an ANFIS for SAC inferreice. When an ANFIS modeling is completed, we can determine a SAC through an ANFIS inferring.

  • We develop a new method of simultaneous optimization of trajectory and shape of redundant flexible manipulators for collision-free utilizing the B-spline function and a mathematical programming method We adopt an approximate flexible manipulator model which consists of rigid bar elements and spring elements. We use B-spline function for determining the approximate trajectory and the expressions of the outline of obstacles. The used total performance index consists of 2 performance indices. The first is the driving energy, and the second is the trajectory deviation which is caused by the approximate modeling for the flexible manipulator. We design optimal collision-free trajectory of flexible manipulators by searching optimum positions of the control points for B-spline approximation which minimize the performance index subject to constraint condition for collision-free. Some examinations through numerical examples show the effectiveness of the method

Design of Electrode Shape with B-Spline Curve Under Specified Field Condition (B-Spline곡선을 이용한 지정된 전계조건하의 전극형상 설계)

  • This paper aims at the design of high voltage electrode contour under specified field condition. Defining the contour with B-Spline curve, the number of contour variables can be reduced and very smooth electrode can be obtained. For the analysis of the electric field, Surface Charge Method which has advantages in practical model has been used. As an initial contour, the rod-plane gap has been used since the difference between maximum and minimum field value is relatively large. Various field conditions including uniform field condition are given to the end of the rod electrode. Under uniform field condition, authors designed an electrode whose field-deviation was under 0.5%. Finally, the relation between the curvature and field of the electrode has been checked, which showed that B-Spline curve is appropriate for the shape function.

A B-spline based Branch & Bound Algorithm for Global Optimization (전역 최적화를 위한 B-스플라인 기반의 Branch & Bound알고리즘)

  • This paper introduces a B-spline based branch & bound algorithm for global optimization. The branch & bound is a well-known algorithm paradigm for global optimization, of which key components are the subdivision scheme and the bound calculation scheme. For this, we consider the B-spline hypervolume to approximate an objective function defined in a design space. This model enables us to subdivide the design space, and to compute the upper & lower bound of each subspace where the bound calculation is based on the LHS sampling points. We also describe a search tree to represent the searching process for optimal solution, and explain iteration steps and some conditions necessary to carry out the algorithm. Finally, the performance of the proposed algorithm is examined on some test problems which would cover most difficulties faced in global optimization area. It shows that the proposed algorithm is complete algorithm not using heuristics, provides an approximate global solution within prescribed tolerances, and has the good possibility for large scale NP-hard optimization.

  • The detection and the examination of outliers are important parts of data analysis because some outliers in the data may have a detrimental effect on statistical analysis. Outlier detection methods have been discussed by many authors. In this article, we propose to apply Hadi and Simonoff's (1993) method to penalized spline a regression model to detect multiple outliers. Simulated data sets and real data sets are used to illustrate and compare the proposed procedure to a penalized spline regression and a robust penalized spline regression.

Stem and Stand Taper Model Using Spline Function and Linear Equation (Spline 함수(函數)와 선형방정식(線型方程式)을 이용한 수간(樹幹) 및 임분간곡선(林分幹曲線)모델)

  • One of the essential factors to estimate the stem and stand growth is to correctly portray a stem form (profile). It is also required to numerically approximate a stem form in order to dynamically grasp and represent a stand growth. A whole stem form seems to be a conical form but a stem outline at various positions tapers off differently. Accordingly it is difficult to model a whole stand form with single taper equation. A stem taper equation with different coefficients on each subinterval can be useful tools to accurately portray a stem form. This article presents the derivation method of individual stem taper curve using spline function. It is also in this paper aimed to study how a stand taper curve car, be derived from the population of single stem taper curve in a stand. These taper equations numerically formulated enable to dynamically represent and prognosticate the development process of a stand and prepare the foundation of variety on growth model study and rational forest planning model.
