  • The initial market of alternative-fuel vehicle (AFV) will show geographically uneven distribution due to AFV's high price, and thus efficient location model should consider spatial variation of demand. This paper estimates AFV trips by incorporating an AFV demand estimation model with origin-destination (OD) trips. The estimates are the input for the flow-refueling location model that maximizes the OD flows that can be refueled by the given number of stations considering AFV's limited range per refueling. A scenario analysis is conducted by varying assumptions in estimating demands and AFV acceptance rate. Optimal location alternatives for Orland metropolitan area are provided and results are compared.

  • A laboratory study was conducted to evaluate if two different age groups(young vs. old) had differences in walking velocity and heel contact velocity and, furthermore, if these gait characteristics could adversely influence initial friction demand characteristics(i.e. RCOF) and the likelihood of slip-initiation. Twenty eight(14 younger and 14 older adults) participated in the study. While wearing a safety harness, all participants walked at their preferred gait speed for approximately 20 minutes on the linear walking track(1.5m× 20m) consisting of two floor-mounted forced plates. During subsequent 20 cameras, respectively. The results indicated that older adults walked slower(i.e., slower whole body center-of-mass velocity), exhibited lower heel contact velocity, and produced lower initial friction demand characteristics (i.e. RCOF) in comparison to younger adults. However, ANCOVA indicated that the diferences in heel contact velocity between the two age groups were due to the effects of walking velocity. The bivariate analysis further suggested that walking velocity was correlated to RCOF and heel contact velocity, while heel contact velocity was not found to be correlated to RCOF. In conclusion, could be a better indicator for predicting initial friction demand characteristics(i.e. RCOF) not hel contact velocity.

  • Accurate demand estimating process in the construction of urban railway is very important, and precise validation is required. Existing model formula in the 4 phase model is limited in the estimation of the demand the administrative boundary-based zone system reflects no spatial railway demand characteristics around railway stations. The purpose of this study is improving the accuracy of urban rail demand estimation through segmentations of station influence areas and modal split characteristics within the areas. According to the case analysis, it is possible to set up the ststion influence area with a radius of 500m in the urban region and 1,000m in the suburban. And eastablishing proper segmentations of the ststion influence area shows more accurate results to the real demand of railway stations.

  • Agricultural water demand is considered as the major sector of water withdrawal due to irrigation. The majority part of the global agricultural field depends on various irrigation techniques. Therefore, a timely and sufficient supply of water is the most important requirement for agriculture. Irrigation is implemented in different ways in various land surface models, it can be modeled empirically based on observed irrigation rates or by calculating water supply and demand. Certain models can also calculate the irrigation demand as per the soil water deficit. In these implementations, irrigation is typically applied uniformly over the irrigated land regardless of crop types or irrigation techniques. Whereas, the latest version of Community Land Model (CLM) in the Community Terrestrial Systems Model (CTSM) uses a global distribution map of irrigation with 64 crop functional types (CFTs) to simulate the irrigation water demand. It can estimate irrigation water withdrawal from different sources and the amount or the areas irrigated with different irrigation techniques. Hence, we set up the model for the simulation period of 16 years from 2000 to 2015 to analyze the global irrigation demand at a spatial resolution of 1.9° × 2.5°. The simulated irrigation water demand is evaluated with the available observation data from FAO AQUASTAT database at the country scale. With the evaluated model, this study aims to suggest new sustainable scenarios for the ratios of irrigation water withdrawal, high depending on the withdrawal sources e.g. surface water and groundwater. With such scenarios, the CFT maps are considered as the determining factor for selecting the areas where the crop pattern can be altered for a sustainable irrigation water management depending on the available withdrawal sources. Overall, our study demonstrate that the scenarios for the future sustainable water resources management in terms of irrigation water withdrawal from the both the surface water and groundwater sources may overcome the excessive stress on exploiting the groundwater in major river basins globally.

  • Since the government has implemented the spatial information policies, there have been great investments and efforts made for the development of domestic technology. However, the practical application of spatial information and the degree of internationalization still leaves more to work to do. The demand of spatial information-related education, and the research and development still relies on the proprietary software from outside. Open Source Software (OSS) has been considered as an alternative for this reason. This study reviews the major trends and examples of FOSS4G in the world, which receives a special attention in the field of spatial information industry. In particular, we analyze the policy implication for the development of national spatial information by examining cases of education and research areas that have been the foundation of the growth of OSS.

  • The evaluation of the seismic hazard for a given site is to estimate the seismic ground motion at the surface. This is the result of the combination of the action of the seismic source, which generates seismic waves, the propagation of these waves between the source and the site, and site local conditions. The aim of this work is to evaluate the sensitivity of dynamic response of extended structures to spatial variable ground motions (SVGM). All factors of spatial variability of ground motion are considered, especially local site effect. In this paper, a method is presented to simulate spatially varying earthquake ground motions. The scheme for generating spatially varying ground motions is established for spatial locations on the ground surface with varying site conditions. In this proposed method, two steps are necessary. Firstly, the base rock motions are assumed to have the same intensity and are modelled with a filtered Tajimi-Kanai power spectral density function. An empirical coherency loss model is used to define spatial variable seismic ground motions at the base rock. In the second step, power spectral density function of ground motion on surface is derived by considering site amplification effect based on the one dimensional seismic wave propagation theory. Several dynamics analysis of a curved viaduct to various cases of spatially varying seismic ground motions are performed. For comparison, responses to uniform ground motion, to spatial ground motions without considering local site effect, to spatial ground motions with considering coherency loss, phase delay and local site effects are also calculated. The results showed that the generated seismic signals are strongly conditioned by the local site effect. In the same sense, the dynamic response of the viaduct is very sensitive of the variation of local geological conditions of the site. The effect of neglecting local site effect in dynamic analysis gives rise to a significant underestimation of the seismic demand of the structure.

  • Recently many local governments have carried out dong merger and abolition process to cope with rapidly changing administrative demand and environment. This administrative effort impacts substantially the locational characteristics of the existing dong offices which directly involve in the quality of local community life. In this paper, we attempt to analyze the location pattern of current dong community service centers (formerly, 'dong office') and suggest the optimal locations maximizing spatial accessibility. As an application, we examine the location pattern of the existing dong community service centers in Mapo-gu, Seoul. Moreover, we compare current spatial configurations with the optimally selected locations such as, a Median maximizing spatial efficiency, a Center maximizing spatial equity, and a Centdian exploring compromising solutions regarding the tradeoff between efficiency and equity. The analytical results present that each of dong community service centers was systematically evaluated in terms of spatial efficiency and equity and in general the community service center locations are not spatially optimized with respect to efficiency and equity, compared with the optimal locations.

  • Purpose: This study aims to emphasize interrelation between healthcare policies, design standards and hospital architecture of the United States since 1950s; to examine spatial characteristics of inpatient care facilities through case studies; and to consider the social implication of these spatial changes. Methods: In this study, reviewing the overall healthcare system, design standards and inpatient care facilities of the United States since 1950s, a total of five inpatient care facilities, one for each period, were selected in order to analyze the spatial characteristics. The spatial maps of Space Syntax were employed for analyzing five case studies. Results: The distance between the nursing station, the support service, and inpatient room were getting closer. The spatial structure of inpatient care facilities is transformed from tree structures to annular tree structures. This result shows that the efficiency between patient, staff and support service is higher and the depth of the spaces is getting deeper, which indicates that efficiency for improving healthcare quality affect the spatial structure of inpatient care facilities. Implications: In the future, if Korea's health policy is changed to a demand-oriented health care policy, this conclusion predicts medical planning of hospital will be focused on the efficiency.
