In 2016, an innovative liquid damper system was installed on the roof of a 35-story modular building in Brooklyn, NY to mitigate wind-induced movement of the structure. The new damper presented several advantages over traditional pendulum, liquid column or sloshing dampers, including lower fabrication and maintenance costs, modularity, and the flexibility to be tuned to a wider range of frequencies. The performance of the system was monitored on a regular basis over the past four years and found adequate, with only minor re-tuning and maintenance operations needed. Based on the experience and data gained through this project, a second iteration of the damper was developed. Called Hummingbird, the improved system further mitigates maintenance and tuning concerns, while allowing significant space savings.

This study examined the empirical meaning of skylight in underground space, and for this purpose, 29 questions were drawn, consisting of technical performance, functional performance, and behavioral performance. In addition, under the assumption that the meaning of the skylight will be clearly revealed through the comparison between the underground streets with and without the skylight, three underground streets with the skylight and three underground streets without the skylight of Japan were selected as the subjects of the study. Based on the results of the survey, descriptive statistical analysis and frequency analysis were conducted, and an independent sample T-test was conducted for each analysis, and correlation analysis was conducted to derive improvement priority. As a result of the analysis, it was found that skylight had a certain effect on the sense of time and imageability inside the underground commercial space. In addition, it was analyzed that skylight exerted important function in the qualitative aspect of underground commercial space. Lastly, the improvement rankings for three underground streets without skylight were derived in the order of sign/guide map, space diversity, maintenance, rest space, and floor design. The improvement rankings for three underground streets with skylight were drawn in order of resting space, diversity of space, temperature and humidity, air, and maintenance.

Due to an inability to accommodate for the rapidly increasing number of printed materials, Korean academic libraries are facing serious space shortage problems. Very few academic institutions have the funds to expand existing libraries or construct new facilities in order to accommodate the influx of printed materials. Despite not having the luxury to create new space, many establishments continue to implement the open access system. Seeing that such a system is only user friendly when used in a spacious facility, the maintenance of the open access system is unreasonable. Only few libraries consider the space efficient closed access system which helps to resolve storage space shortage. In the current state of the problem, improving the efficiency to which books are stored in existing storage areas within a library facility is the only appropriate solution. Enacting methods to improve physical space utilization within a fixed volume library facility will undoubtedly diminish the space shortage issue at hand. In this article, several space efficiency improvement approaches are discussed. Methods of book storage plan re-layout (floor, plan, ceiling, height, bookshelf design), book arrangement possibilities, and the reduction of the physical volume of reserved materials are each examined.

Recently, the public offices are going to be an important role of CIP(City Identity Program) and be a center of citizen's community activities. So, the aspect of the universal design (UD), the space performance assessment for a disable user is invaluable to designing the public office spaces. Purpose of this paper is to provide basic data for better design of public office space based on UD(universal design) principle. Conclusion based on the finding are as follows; First, checklist of environmental assessment for public space was composed of 7 basic principles of UD and 3 additional principles(aesthetic appreciation, maintenance and eco-design). Second, as the result of assessment, accessible and inclusive design is more necessary. Third, local characteristics should be developed and managed deliberately as to public space design. As the result of that, public office space design should an important part of reducing the isolation that was caused by physical and social disability. From now on, in public office space design, the integrated and continuous design program that is based on UD principle and eco-design will be necessary.
With the development and utilization of urban underground space, the artificial ground freezing technology has been widely used in the construction of underground engineering in soft soil areas. The mechanical properties of soft clay changed greatly after freezing and thawing, which affected the seismic performance of underground structures. In this paper, a series of triaxial tests were carried out to study the dynamic response of the freezing-thawing clay under the seismic load considering different dynamic stress amplitudes and different confining pressures. The reduction factor of dynamic shear stress was determined to correct the amplitude of the seismic load. The deformation development mode, the stress-strain relationship and the energy dissipation behavior of the soft clay under the seismic load were analyzed. An empirical model for predicting accumulative plastic strain was proposed and validated considering the loading times, the confining pressures and the dynamic stress amplitudes. The relevant research results can provide a theoretical reference to the seismic design of underground structures in soft clay areas.
In this work, preliminary launch opportunities from NARO Space Center to the Sun-Earth Lagrange point are analyzed. Among five different Sun-Earth Lagrange points, L1 and L2 points are selected as suitable candidates for, respectively, solar and astrophysics missions. With high fidelity dynamics models, the L1 and L2 point targeting problem is formulated regarding the location of NARO Space Center and relevant Target Interface Point (TIP) for each different launch date is derived including launch injection energy per unit mass (C3), Right ascension of the injection orbit Apoapsis Vector (RAV) and Declination of the injection orbit Apoapsis Vector (DAV). Potential launch periods to achieve L1 and L2 transfer trajectory are also investigated regarding coasting characteristics from NARO Space Center. The magnitude of the Lagrange Orbit Insertion (LOI) burn, as well as the Orbit Maintenance (OM) maneuver to maintain more than one year of mission orbit around the Lagrange points, is also derived as an example. Even the current work has been made under many assumptions as there are no specific mission goals currently defined yet, so results from the current work could be a good starting point to extend diversities of future Korean deep-space missions.

In recent years, the service life of major SOC facilities in south korea has exceeded 30 years, and rapid aging is expected within the next 10 years. This has led to a growing recognition of the need for proactive maintenance of these facilities. Consequently, there have been numerous research efforts to introduce smart inspection technologies into maintenance. However, the current system relies primarily on manpower for safety inspections and diagnostics, and on-site surveys rely on visual inspections. Manpower inspections can be time-consuming, and subjective errors may occur during result analysis. In the case of tunnels, there are disadvantages, such as the loss of social overhead capital due to partial closures during inspections. Therefore, institutionalizing smart safety inspections is essential, considering specific measures like using advanced equipment and updating qualifications for experts. Furthermore, it is necessary to verify and validate safety inspection results using advanced equipment before instituting changes. This could be achieved through national-level official research programs and the operation of verification and validation institutions. If smart inspection technology is introduced into maintenance, routine inspections of SOC facilities, such as tunnels, will become feasible. As a result, maintenance technology capable of early detection and proactive response to safety incidents caused by changes in facility conditions is anticipated.
The development of data communication and network technology has brought a change to various communications through the internet. Regarding the stable internet service, corporations and Individuals came to require an internet data center in which there is computer equipment and network devices available 24 hours everyday. The internet data center is now on a large scale in its structure and facility, suitable for the internet environment that is under development in various dimensions, and effective for task support, stable facility, capable of space expansion and flexibility, and easiness in ease of maintenance and management, etc. The monitoring center of the data center which is one of the core facilities in the center, special space elements and functions as well as a function of task space are to be put into consideration additionally. This study was to present a proposal for the space elements and environmental design of a monitoring center, which could create an efficient and comfortable room.

As WSNs(Wireless Sensor Networks) are being deployed widely in diverse application areas, their management and maintenance become more important. Recent sensor node software takes modular software architectures in pursuit of flexible software management and energy efficient reprogramming. To realize an flexible and efficient modular architecture particularly on resource constrained mote-class sensor nodes that are implemented with MCUs(Micro-Controller Units) of a single address space. an appropriate module linking model is essential to resolve and bind the inter-module global symbols. This paper identifies a design space of module linking model and respectively their implementation frameworks. We then establish a taxonomy for module linking models by exploring the design space of module linking models. Finally, we suggest an implementation framework respectively for each module linking model in the taxonomy. We expect that this work lays the foundations for systematic innovation toward more flexible and efficient modular software architectures for WSNs.

The states of control loops in existing actual systems are changed according to time varying conditions of controllest process and other system components. Adjusting control parameters properly at site which is performed generally by Ziegler & Nichols mthod is important for safe and efficient operation, but the method may require much time to adjust and not easy to inexperienced engineers. This study is aimed to propose more handy method to adjust control parameters by plotting operating conditions on the space of adjusting parameters. One loop of model control system without perturbation condition has been adopted and its stability limit was plotted on the coordinates of Gain and Integral time which was acquired after analyzing Nyquist diagrams and time domain responses. The result showed that the sets of adjusting parameters according to critical stability and proper stability could be acquired reasonably through both responses and the curves on parameter space revealed available patterns for the purpose of easy maintenance of control characteristics.
