  • Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) under the partial shading condition is a challenging research topic for photovoltaic systems. Shaded photo-voltaic module result in complex peak patterns on the power versus voltage curve which can misguide classical MPPT algorithms. Thus, various kinds of global MPPT algorithms have been studied. These have typically consisted of partial shading detection, global peak search and MPPT. The conventional partial shading detection algorithm aims to detect all of the occurrences of partial shading. This results in excessive execution of global peak searches and discontinuous operation of the MPPT. This in turn, reduces the achievable power for the PV module. Based on a theoretical investigation of power verse voltage curve patterns under various partial shading conditions, it is realized that not all the occurrences of partial shadings require a global peak search. Thus, an intelligent partial shading detection algorithm that provides exact identification of global peak search necessity is essential for the efficient utilization of solar energy resources. This paper presents a new partial shading determinant algorithm utilizing adaptive threshold levels. Conventional methods tend to be too sensitive to sharp shading patterns but insensitive to smooth patterns. However, the proposed algorithm always shows superb performance, regardless of the partial shading patterns.

  • In the previous researches on mesh curve fairing method, a set of discrete data points in a mesh can be selected as variables. End tangent vectors can not be variables. This restriction makes some problems in preparing the end tangent vectors at the bow or stern parts, because their slopes are not infinites or zeros. In this paper end tangent vectors are included as variables and the more smooth results are obtained. Also two methods of constructing ship hull surface from mesh curves are examined. It is shown that the skinning method is better than non-uniform B-spline fitting method in representing the area near boundary. The generation of a ship surface is given as an example.

  • Plasma polymerized organic thin films were deposited on Si(100) glass and metal substrates using thiophene and ethylcyclohexane precursors by PECVD method. In order to compare electrochemical properties of the as-grown thin films, the effects of the RF plasma power in the range of 30~100 W. AFM showed that the polymer films with smooth surface and sharp interface could be grown under various deposition conditions. Impedance analyzer was utilized for the determination of I-V curve for leakage current density and C-V for dielectric constants, respectively. To obtain C-V curve, we used a MIM structure of metal(Al)-insulator(plasma polymerized thin film)-metal(Pt) structure. Al as the electrode was evaporated on the thiophene films that grew on Pt coated silicon substrates, and the dielectric constants of the as-grown films were then calculated from C- V data measured at 1MHz. From the electrical property measurements such as I-V and C-V characteristics, the minimum dielectric constant and the best leakage current of thiophene thin films were obtained to be about 3.22 and $1{\;}{\times}10^{-11}{\;}A/cm^2$. However, in case of ethylcyclohexane thin films, the minimum dielectric constant and the best leakage current were obtained to be about 3.11 and $5{\;}{\times}10^{-12}{\;}A/cm^2$.

  • Gears are critical elements in automobiles, and their use as power transmitting machine elements in engineering applications is quite extensive. In the areas of contact between gear teeth, the condition of a gear is likely to deteriorate due to contact fatigue, wear, material defects, lubrication failure, etc. Thus, it is necessary to monitor its condition to ensure smooth power transmission. Gear teeth deterioration causes failures such as abrasive wear, scuffing, pitting, and spalling. These failures lead to a higher level of vibration signals in the gear system. This paper presents the results of an experiment on the surface fatigue wear of a spur gear system. The correlation between the estimated specific film thickness, statistical parameter of the vibration signals, and Stribeck curve was considered in this study.

  • In this study, a TiO2/TiO2-x-based resistance variable memory was fabricated using a DC/RF magnetron sputtering system and ALD. In order to analyze the effect of oxygen plasma treatment on the performance of resistance random access memory (ReRAM), the TiO2/TiO2-x-based ReRAM was evaluated by applying RF power to the TiO2-x oxygen-holding layer at 30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 W, respectively. The ReRAM was fabricated, and the electrical and surface area performances were compared and analyzed. In the case of ReRAM without oxygen plasma treatment, the I-V curve had a hysteresis curve shape, but the width was very small, with a relatively high surface roughness of the oxygen-retaining layer. However, in the case of oxygen plasma treatment, the HRS/LRS ratio for the I-V curve improved as the applied RF power increased; stable improvement was also noted in the surface roughness of the oxygen-retaining layer. It was confirmed that the low voltage drive was not smooth due to charge trapping in the oxygen diffusion barrier layer owing to the high intensity ReRAM applied with an RF power of approximately 150 W.

  • This paper presents an experimental study of the effect of rolling speed and surface roughness on the mixed elastohydrodynamic (EHD) lubrication characteristics for point contact formed between a real, random, rough surface, steel ball and smooth glass disc. The Thin Film Colorimetic Interferometry measurement technique has been extended to give detailed information about in-contact deformation of the microgeometry. It has enabled to derive the amplitude reduction curve that shows progressive recovering of ball roughness features with increasing speed.

  • In this paper, a sliding mode control scheme that guarantees the smoothness of the control signal and the exponential error convergence is proposed for robot manipulators. The proposed method inserts a low pass filter (LPF) in front of the plant, and the virtual controller is designed for the virtual plant - the combination of the LPF and the robot manipulator. The virtual control signal contains high frequency components because of a switching function. The real control signal, however, always shows a smooth curve since it is an output of the LPF. In addition to the smoothness of the control signal is always assured, the overall system is in the sliding mode at all times, that is, its performance is always invariant under the existence of parameter uncertainties and external disturbances. The closed-loop system is shown to be globally exponentially stable.

  • A non-uniform 3-point ternary interpolatory subdivision scheme with variable subdivision weights is introduced. Its support is computed. The $C^0$ and $C^1$ convergence analysis are presented. To elevate its controllability, a modified edition is proposed. For every initial control point on the initial control polygon a shape weight is introduced. These weights can be used to control the shape of the corresponding subdivision curve easily and purposefully. The role of the initial shape weight is analyzed theoretically. The application of the presented schemes in designing smooth interpolatory curves and surfaces is discussed. In contrast to most conventional interpolatory subdivision scheme, the presented subdivision schemes have better locality. They can be used to generate $C^0$ or $C^1$ interpolatory subdivision curves or surfaces and control their shapes wholly or locally.

  • Several cell models, so-called local approach, have been proposed as engineering approaches to numerically simulate ductile fracture characteristics. In this paper, two- and three-dimensional finite element analyses incorporating both modified GTN and Rousselier models were carried out. Smooth and notched bars and CT25 specimens were assessed for StE460 and DIN22NiMoCr37 materials which were quoted from previous researches. Micro-mechanical parameters used in the assessment were established by fitting the numerical results with the experiments, and J-R curves derived from the simulations were found to be in good agreement with the corresponding experimental results.
