  • The increase of smartphone users have made mobile carriers offload increasingly congested traffic of 3/4G by providing Wi-Fi hot-spots in the public places such as coffee shops and subway stations. In the traditional authentication in WLAN, the users should convince the service providers that they are valid customers before they use WLAN services. Since the authentication protocol is designed for service providers. Even with the mutual authentication based on the IEEE 802.1X, which is supported by IEEE 802.11 standard, it is difficult to be convinced of that the service providers really have installed the WLAN APs, which users are confronted with. An attacker can install rogue APs that masquerade as legitimate APs by copying the SSID, MAC address, etc. in order to obtain users' private information. In this paper, we introduce a method of authenticating legitimate APs for smartphone users. And we show our proposal can be well utilized for the current Wi-Fi hot-spots as a security plug-in and prove it through our experiments.

  • The number of cyclists is on the steady growing for leisure and transportation with the increasing interest in health and environment. However, the number of cycling accidents is also increasing steadily due to the lack of safety awareness and regulations. Focusing on this issue, we propose and develop a smart LED bicycle helmet in order to reduce a risk of cycling accident. The main idea is to change status of the LED on the helmet based on the bicycle's movement and provide motion information of the bicycle for others. To control the LED lights on the helmet, we use the Arduino board which communicates with the LED module through serial connection. We decide motion information by using the values from acceleration and GPS sensors of the smartphone. To receive this information from the smartphone, the control board and the smartphone are connected by Bluetooth.

  • This study investigates the user experience about the camera application and the operation environment that share the photographed pictures with the SNS in a smartphone user environment which is a necessity of modern people. To do this, 10 task tasks were selected based on 3 aspects such as manipulation, editing, and sharing, and the task execution time was measured after tasks were performed on 8 persons, 4 persons in 20s. Experiments conducted mainly on Samsung Experience 8 and LG UX 6.0, which are representative user interfaces of Android mobile operating system, showed that there are differences in usability between the three interfaces for each interface. In the course of the experiment, all of the subjects mentioned ease of operation and various functions as advantages. However, the complexity of text-based interfaces has been difficult to use because of the variety of functions that can be set up. Future research will be needed to improve the usability of camera applications by user interface.

  • The smartphone allows learners to be involved in learning environments in which students actively study from anywhere and at anytime. Because learners can keep engaged in the environment where they can access to the internet, they can efficiently study in transit using various features and functions of smartphone. Smart learning is a unique learning based on mobility and functions of mobile digital devices including searching and sharing information and using various applications. For the effective use of smartphones in e-learning systems, the contents and learning management systems should be designed to meet effective teaching and learning principles, such as interactivity and collaborations. In smart learning, learning contents for effective learning need to be integrated with typical functions of smartphones and to develop small pieces of learning contents according to learning topics. In the case of learning management systems, it should reflect understanding of learners' environment using a PA agent program and provide personalized learning services.

  • This paper proposes a method that automatically sets profile schedule context-based mobile phone by collecting the user's external situation based on the GPS sensor and accelerometer built into the smartphone and interacting with the data in the user's schedule to minimize the user's handset handling. However, real-time data collection in mobile phones causes energy shortage in the device due to battery consumption. In other words, a service control method is explained in a way that can efficiently handle resource consumption because accessing a measurement device such as GPS and other sensors may increase power consumption of the portable device. Therefore, effective data sharing for context awareness to reduce weekly schedules and smartphone mode has improved energy efficiency in sensing for data collection. The user can use the context more effectively by providing environmental adaptability for various situations such as the end user's local context and smartphone force control.

  • As the number of smartphone users increases, vulnerability to privacy protection is increasing. This is because personal information is stored on various servers connected to the Internet and the user is authenticated using the same ID and password. Authentication methods such as OTP, FIDO, and PIN codes have been introduced to solve traditional authentication methods, but their use is limited for authentication that requires sharing with other users. In this paper, we propose the authentication method that is needed for the management of shared information such as hospitals and corporations. The proposed algorithm is an algorithm that can authenticate users in the same place in real time using smart phone IMEI, QR code, BLE, push message. We propose an authentication algorithm that can perform user authentication through mutual cooperation using a smart phone and can cancel realtime authentication. And we designed and implemented a mutual authentication system using proposed algorithm.

  • Current surveying and spatial information technology incorporates information and communication technology and is user friendly. However, it is not convenient to use in the field because a connection to a computer, such as a laptop, tablet PC, or desktop PC, is needed to obtain the survey results and the coordinates of the surveyed points. To solve this problem, we developed an app that can display surveyed data on a map and the current survey results through a connection between a total station and smartphone using a Bluetooth wireless communication device. The app allows users to perform field work simultaneously with office work in the field, because it consists of Bluetooth, closed traverse survey, current status survey, and coordinate conversion modules. The proposed app should increase user convenience and the operational capability of the total station in the field.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the types and capabilities of smartphone apps related to tea, coffee, wine and beer. As a result of examining the capabilities of 200 tea, coffee, wine and beer apps from Apple App Store, 17 types of capabilities were identified. The study found no significant difference in the capabilities of tea and coffee apps, but there was a significant difference in the capabilities of tea and wine apps, and tea and beer apps (p<0.01). Entertainment-oriented apps take up a higher proportion of tea-related apps while wine apps, provide a higher proportion of consumer usability-oriented apps such as finding information about wine, writing notes about wine characteristics, finding nearby shops/cafes. In order to increase practical use of tea-related apps, this study proposes capabilities of coffee, wine, and beer apps as examples and presents app menu to promote development of tea-related apps.

  • This study was conducted to test the impacts of distractions caused by smartphones on pedestrians whilst walking alongside or across vehicular traffic in a high-density urban zone in South Korea. Through this study, we propose objective evidence for a link between the risk of traffic accidents and distractions from smartphones for pedestrians because of less likely notice activities surrounding road along their walking. This means that smartphones usage may cause inattentional blindness even during a simple activity that should require few cognitive resources. We conducted an experiment comparing pedestrian behavioral patterns of walking with smartphone distractions (such as listening to music with earphones or sending text messages) and normal walking without any distractions. In the experiment, participants walked along a pedestrian path prescribed by researchers and were observed at 8 points which were as follows: two observation points through which participants were instructed to listen to music whilst walking, two points where participants were instructed to send text messages, and four points through which participants were instructed not to use a smartphone at all. According to pedestrian behavior analysis, there is a trend for attention to be distributed amongst whatever other activities pedestrians are doing whilst walking. Therefore, this study proposes that pedestrians walking with such distractions are at a higher risk of traffic accidents compared to those who walk without such distractions. Thus, we advise for the South Korean government to consider ways to traffic policy that will enhance traffic safety for pedestrians.
