The bacterial cellulose (BC) production by a wildstrain Acetobacter xylinum BPR2001 and that by its acetannonproducing mutant, EPI, were compared in a jar fermentor. EPI produced about $28\%$ less BC than the wild-strain. The apparent difference in the cultivation of the two strains was the viscosity increase in the culture broth that was closely associated with acetan production. Increasing the viscosity of the culture broth of EPI by adding agar led to the formation of relatively small and uniform BC pellets, and BC production consequently became two-fold higher than that in the absence of agar and was almost equal to that by BPR2001. Therefore, acetan has an important role in BC production by inducing physical changes in the culture broth of the wild-type strain.

This paper researches static and dynamic bending behaviors of a crystalline nano-size shell having pores and grains in the framework of strain gradient elasticity. Thus, the nanoshell is made of a multi-phase porous material for which all material properties on dependent on the size of grains. Also, in order to take into account small size effects much accurately, the surface energies related to grains and pores have been considered. In order to take into account all aforementioned factors, a micro-mechanical procedure has been applied for describing material properties of the nanoshell. A numerical trend is implemented to solve the governing equations and derive static and dynamic deflections. It will be proved that the static and dynamic deflections of the crystalline nanoshell rely on pore size, grain size, pore percentage, load location and strain gradient coefficient.
In this study, using the CRS consolidation tests on reconstituted marine clay, the characteristics of C$\sub$v/, k, e and $\varepsilon$, the anisotropic characteristics of specimen according to the rate of strain were estimated. Also, the validity of the Wissa et al.(1971) consolidation theory on CRS(Constant Rate of Strain) consolidation tests were reviewed. From that results, it was shown that the value of C$\sub$v/, k and u$\sub$b/ was increased as the rate of strain was increased. While the difference of the value( C$\sub$v/, k and u$\sub$b/) between vertically reconstituted specimen and horizontally reconstituted specimen became small as the rate of strain was increased. It is known that k is different due to the hydraulic gradient(i) during the CRS consolidation tests. The subject of this study is to distinguish steady state from transient state in CRS consolidation tests. Consequently, the difference of the value(C$\sub$v/ and k) is higher in case of vertically reconstituted specimen than horizontally reconstituted specimen.
An experimental technique was developed to determine the strain-rate in a tensile specimen. Then one can calculate the transient isothermal elongational viscosity. Both shear and elongational viscosities were measured to study the effect of shear and elongational fields on the flow properties. The comparison between these viscosities shows that the onset of rapid viscosity growth as crystallization solidification proceeds occurs at about the same value of time at very small deformation rates (0.0028 and 0.0047 $s^{-1}$). The comparison of these measured viscosities as functions of shear and elongational Hencky strains also reveals that the onset of rapid viscosity growths starts at critical Hencky strain values. The behaviour of steady shear viscosity as function of temperature sweep was also explored at three different low shear rates. Finally, the influence of changing oscillatory frequencies and strain rates was also investigated.
Two possible shape memory processes, austenite to detwinned martensite transformation and twinned martensite to detwinned martensite transformation of a shape memory alloy have been modeled and examined. Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method with Mori-Tanaka's mean field theory is used for modeling of the shape memory processes of TiNi shape memory alloy reinforced aluminum matrix composite. The shape memory amount of shape memory alloy, plastic strain and residual stress in the matrix are computed and compared for the two processes. It is shown that the shape memory amount shows differences in a small prestrain region, but the plastic strain and the residual stress in the matrix show differences in the whole prestrain region. The shape memory process with initially martensitic state of the shape memory alloy would be favorable to the increase in the yield stress of the composite owing to the large compressive residual stress and plastic strain in the matrix.
In the present paper, the nonlocal strain gradient refined model is used to study the thermal stability of sandwich nanoplates integrated with piezoelectric layers for the first time. The influence of Kerr elastic foundation is also studied. The present model incorporates two small-scale coefficients to examine the size-dependent thermal stability response. Elastic properties of nanoplate made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) are supposed to vary through the thickness direction and are estimated employing a modified power-law rule in which the porosity with even type of distribution is approximated. The governing differential equations of embedded sandwich piezoelectric porous nanoplates under hygrothermal loading are derived through Hamilton's principle where the Galerkin method is applied to solve the stability problem of the nanoplates with simply-supported edges. It is indicated that the thermal stability characteristics of the porous nanoplates are obviously influenced by the porosity volume fraction and material variation, nonlocal parameter, strain gradient parameter, geometry of the nanoplate, external voltage, temperature and humidity variations, and elastic foundation parameters.

The stress-strain relationship of an unsaturated soil was analyzed by Bishop stress descriptions in this study. The failure criteria could be defined uniquely by the Bishop stress and were also independent of matric suctions. In the low level of matric suctions the failure criteria have a linear relationship and the estimated criterion fitted the measured accurately. Deformation moduli in the small strain level were linearly increased generally with respect to Bishop stress.
Employing the non-local strain gradient theory (NSGT), this paper investigates the nonlinear resonance characteristics of functionally graded material (FGM) nanoshells with initial geometric imperfection for the first time. The effective material properties of the porous FGM nanoshells with even distribution of porosities are estimated by a modified power-law model. With the guidance of Love's thin shell theory and considering initial geometric imperfection, the strain equations of the shells are obtained. In order to characterize the small-scale effect of the nanoshells, the nonlocal parameter and strain gradient parameter are introduced. Subsequently, the Euler-Lagrange principle was used to derive the motion equations. Considering three boundary conditions, the Galerkin principle combined with the modified Lindstedt Poincare (MLP) method are employed to discretize and solve the motion equations. Finally, the effects of initial geometric imperfection, functional gradient index, strain gradient parameters, non-local parameters and porosity volume fraction on the nonlinear resonance of the porous FGM nanoshells are examined.
Sixteen strains of marine rotifer, Braohionus plicatilis were isolated from salt pond, estuary and lagoon. Among 16 strains, 2 strains were large (L)-type and the others were small (S) or ultra small (US)-type. Four strains of fresh water rotifer, B. calyciflorus were isolated from commercial fish ponds. The size of lorica and resting egg were measured. In B. plicatilis, the range of lorica length from S-type and S-type were $244.3{\~}255.3\;{\mu}m$ and $131.0{\~}165.8\;{\mu}m$, respectively. The major axis of resting egg in the marine rotifer were $93.7\~116.4\;{\mu}m$ for S-type and $142.4{\~}145.5\;{mu}m$ for L-type, respectively. In freshwater rotifer, B. calyciflorus, the size range of lorica and major axis of resting egg were $211.8\~229.9\;{\mu}m$ and $126.8\~140.2\;{mu}m$, respectively. The size of freshwater rotifer was larger than that of S-type marine rotifer, but smaller than that of L-type one. Growth and formation of resting egg of B. plicatilis were different among the strains. The maximum density of S-type and L-type rotifer was 753.3 inds./ml for H-S strain and 220 inds./ml for O-L strain, respectively. The largest production of resting egg of S-type and L-type rotifer were 86.7 inds./ml for YY-S strain and 45.8 inds./ml for O-L strain, respectively.
Mixtures of sand and rubber particles ($D_{sand}/D_{rubber}=1$) are investigated to explore their characteristics under different stain level. Mixtures are prepared with different volumetric sand fractions ($sf=V_{sand}/V_{total}$). Experimental data are gathered from a resonant column, an instrumented oedometer, and a direct shear tests. Results show that sand and rubber differently control the behavior of the whole mixture with strain level. Non-linear degradation of small strain stiffness is observed for the mixtures with $sf{\geq}0.4$, while the mixtures with low sand fraction ($sf{\leq}0.2$) show significantly high elastic threshold strain. Vertical stress-deformation increases dramatically when the rubber particle works as a member of force chain. The strength of the mixtures increases as the content of rubber particle decreases, and contractive behavior is observed in the mixtures with $sf{\leq}0.8$. Rubber particle plays different roles with strain level in the mixture: it increases a coordination number and controls a plasticity of the mixture in small strain; it prevents a buckling of force chain in intermediate strain; it leads a contractive behavior in large strain.
