  • The main obstacle to high track density in HDD id the structural resonances of the suspension. The most critical mode is sway mode and second torsion mode, when a data is read and written. It is common fact that the effect of two modes is smaller when a thickness is bulky. But the stiffness of suspension is smaller, the slider can follow a disk better. Because these two fact are reciprocal, a compromise is needed. So we investigated another method to improve band width without changing of the thickness of suspension but with changing of the shape. • In this study, the topology optimization is applied to the design of a piezoelectric microactuator satisfying the specific mean transduction ratio(MTR). The optimization problem is formulated to minimize the difference between the specified and the current mean transduction ratio. In order to analyze the response of the piezoelectric-structure coupled system, both the structural and the electric potential are considered in the finite element method. The optimization problem is resolved by using Sequential Linear Programming(SLP) and the results of test problems show that the design of a piezoelectric microactuator with the specified mean transduction ratio can be obtained.

  • The flexibility as well as the stiffness is required to perform mechanical function of a structure such as compliant mechanisms, which can be applied to MEMS(Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems), flexible manufacturing devices, and design for no assembly. In this paper, the optimal design problem to achieve both structural flexibility and stiffness is formulated using multi-objective function, and the optimization problem is resolved by using Finite Element Method(FEM) and Sequential Linear Programming(SLP). Design examples of compliant mechanisms are presented to validate the design method.

  • This paper investigates the methodology to develop a layout of the simulator for measuring and evaluating human sensibility. Since the simulator layout is different from general building layouts in that it is organized in order to communicate systematically between facilities, laboratories to evaluate human sensibility and equipments to support experiments in simulator, two approaches based on eigenvector and cut tree are support to develop a simulator layout. Qualitative input data (relationship chart, space requirements for each laboratory and equipment) are obtained and transformed into quantitative data. The information obtained by two approaches provides several meaningful clues to generate the simulator layout. The simulator layout is presented based on the obtained information by two approaches. Extracted quantitative data by using eigenvector and cut tree are meaningful of generating the simulator layout.

  • Recent years have seen an explosion of new knowledge defining the molecular events that are critical for development and activation of immune cells. Much of this new information has come from a careful molecular dissection of key signal transduction pathways that are initiated when immune cell receptors are engaged. In addition to the receptors themselves and critical effector molecules, these signaling pathways depend on adapters, proteins that have no intrinsic effector function but serve instead as scaffolds to nucleate multimolecular complexes. This review summarizes some of what has been learned about one such adapter protein, SH2 domain-containing leukocyte phosphoprotein of 76 kDa (SLP-76), and how it regulates and integrates signals after engagement of immunoreceptors and integrins on various immune cell lineages.

  • In this paper the comparison of the first order approximation schemes such as SLP(sequential linear programming) CONLIN(convex linearization) MMA(method of moving asymptotes) and the second order approximation scheme SQP(sequential quadratic programming) was accomplished for optimization of nonlinear structures. It was found that MMA and SQP are the most efficient methods for optimization. But the number of function call of SQP is much more than that of MMA. Therefore when it is considered with the expense of computation MMA is more efficient than SQP. In order to examine the efficiency of MMA for complex optimization problem it was applied to the helicopter tail boom con-sidering column buckling and local wall buckling constraints. it is concluded that MMA can be a very efficient approxima-tion scheme from simple problems to complex problems.

  • In this study, the development of graphic user interface(GUI) program for optimum design of RC continuous beam is dealt. Optimum design problem that satisfies strength, serviceability, durability and geometrical conditions is formulated as a non-linear programming problem(NLP) in which the objective function as well as the constraints are highly non-linear on design variables such as cross sectional dimensions and steel ratio. Optimum design problem is solved by NLP techniques namely, sequential linear programming(SLP), sequential convex programming(SCP). Numerical examples of R.C. continuous beam using GUI system are given to show usefulness of GUI system for practical design work and efficiency of algorithm for the NLP techniques.

  • Recently, piezoelectric materials have attracted considerable attention because of its self-sensing and actuating properties. To model smart structures, numerical modeling of structures with piezoelectric devices is essential. As many factors affect the performance of smart structures, optimization of these parameters is necessary. In this paper, the shape design sensitivity analysis of the 3D piezoelectric and structural elements is developed and shape optimization is performed. For the evaluation of the sensitivity, the finite element method is used. For the shape sensitivity, the domain velocity field is calculated. An acoustic cavity model is presented as a numerical example to study the feasibility of the formulation. The continuum sensitivity is compared with the results of the finite difference method by ANSYS. And the sequential linear programming (SLP) algorithm is used as the optimization algorithm.
