  • CeO$_2$ and NiO buffers for YBCO coated conductors were deposited on biaxially textured Ni substrate by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition(MOCVD) and the deposition behavior were investigated. The degree of texture of deposited CeO$_2$ and NiO films was strongly dependent on the deposition temperature(T$\sub$d/) and oxygen partial pressure(P$\sub$O$_2$/). ($\ell$00) textured films were well deposited at specific deposition temperatures and oxygen partial pressures. The in-plane and out of plane textures estimated form the full width half maximum of the pole figure peaks were less than 10$^{\circ}$. The surface morphology showed that the CeO$_2$ films consisted of columnar grains grown normal to the Ni substrates, while NiO films were slate and clean like a mirror. The surface roughness of both films estimated by atomic force microscopy(AFM) were as smooth as 3-10 m. The growth rate of the films is much faster than that of other physical deposition methods.

  • The purpose of this study was to (md out the characteristics of the residential house in Ulleung Island in terms of building materials, structure and construction method, structural design by actual field surveys. This study found several facts; First, the house was classified into the log house and mud-wall house according to building material for wall structure. The log house prevailed in the early days of the settlement in the island because of affulent timber materials available around. However, the mud wall house became a popular type in later days because of the depletion of timber materials. Second, the Udeki wall was an unique installation reflecting the severe climate conditions of Ulleung Island. However, many aspects of the Udeki wall was changed according to the change of living style and the introduction of modem heating systems in terms of its function, size, building material, layout position etc. Third, the roofing material also has been changed from materials available locally to slate materials transported from the mainland. Fourth, the bamboo slender-ribbed door as a single-swing door type was popular and later time the single-sliding door or three ribbed door was widely used in rooms installed later instead. Fifth, the roof was placed over the room, kitchen, and Chukdam (outer wall) and this was a resonable way to cope with heavy snowfalls in the winter season in Ulleung Island.

  • Stone-monuments, distributed in this area, have been investigated and studied on the characteristics and the rock phases in the geological and conservational points of view. Most of them may have been built from the end of the Shilla Kingdom to the Koryeo Kingdom, which are based on the typical characteristics of the form. The used rocks in these monuments are mainly biotite granite of the Jurassic age which is widely distributed around the area. Black slate and marbles are also used in some monuments, which may be obtained from other areas. The biotite granite of massive and coarse texture contains often inclusions of biotite aggregates or fragments of dioritic rock phase. However, the biotite granite in the area may be very weak to the chemical weathering so that irregular rock surface shows generally $2\~3mm$ relief. The irregular relief is mainly due to different relative degree on the chemical weathering according to the kind of minerals especially quartz, feldspar and biotite. The chemical weathering is also influenced by organisms. For conservation, they must be scientifically considered based on the characteristics, kind of the rock phase, factors on the weathering process, situation in situ or being transported, and protection.

  • Geological and electrical resistivity surveys were carried out to investigate subsurface geology and geologic structure of the Bonghwajae area in the Okchon zone. Pseudosections of the apparent electrical resistivity distribution along the three survey lines were obtained by using dipole-dipole electrode array method, and models of subsurface geology and geologic structure by using two dimensional finite difference method. The Bonghwajae fault zone exists around Bonghwajae area in the north-south direction, and is a boundary between Okchon Group and Choson Supper Group. Metabasite and hornblende gabbro intruded along the Bonghwajae fault zone remaining two fracture zones with low resistivity value of 20 ohm-m and widths of about 100m and 70-300m. They strike nearly N-S and dip westward with a high angle of $60-70^{\circ}$. Sochangri fault with a width of about 160m exists between Jisogori and Bonghwajae, by which Bonghwajae fault zone is displaced about 1km in the east-west direction. Hornblende gabbro whose electrical resistivity value is in the range of 5000-8000 ohm-m intruded the metabasite of 2000-4500 ohm-m after the Sochangri fault had formed. Great Limestone Group is widely distributed in the east of Bonghwajae fault zone, and interbeds so called Yongam formation of graphitic black slate with an extremely low electrical resistivity value of 2 ohm-m.

  • In order to investigate soil-gas $^{222}Rn$ concentrations, Kwanak Campus (Seoul National University), Boeun (Choong-buk) and Gapyung (Kyonggi) areas were selected and classified depending on their base rock types. Radon risk indices of these study areas decrease in the order of Gapyung>Kwanak Campus>Boeun areas, and in the order of rock type as banded gneiss>granite gneiss>granite>black slate-shale>mica schist>shale-lirnestone>phyllite-schist. Radon emanating trends with water content and grain size of soils were assessed by modified Morse 3 min. method. Radon emanation increases with the increase of water content in soils which is lower than 6~16 wt.%, and decreases in the range of higher than 6-16 wt. %. It shows that Rn emanation increases with the decrease of soil grain size. Radioactivity analysis of radionuclides of 238U series in some soil samples shows that radioactive disequilibrium state between $^{226}Ra$ and $^{238}U$ exists owing to different geochemical behavior of each radionuclide, and, it is necessary to carry out radioactive isotope geochemical approach for soil-gas $^{222}Rn$ study.

  • The Imgye hornblendites occur as intrusive sills or dykes within the mylonite zone developed along the contact boundary between Precambrian Jungbongsan granite and Cambrian Jangsan quartzite or Myobong slate formations. The hornlendites belong to the subalkaline and tholeiitic series. In tectonomagmatic discrimination diagrams such as $TiO_2-K_2O-P_2O_5$, 2Nb-Zr/4-Y and $TiO_2-10MnO-10P_2O_5$, the hornblendites are classified into continental- and island-arc tholeiites. The hornblendites show fractionated REE patterns with $(La/Yb)_{CN}$ ranging from 3.73-4.56. In incompatible element abundance variations, the hornblendites show distinctive positive and negative anomalies for Rb and Nb, respectively, and unfractionated patterns of immobile incompatible elements such as Y and Yb. The REE patterns of the hornblendites are also similar to those of typical continental back-arc tholeiites and those of the Precambrian Okbang amphibolites in the Socheon-meon, Bonghwa-gun. Accoiding to geochemical characteristics above-mentioned, the hornblendites seem to have been formed from tholeiitic magmas of depleted upper mantle source, contaminated by crustal material en route to continental back-arc basin.

  • Osteoporosis means a deficiency in the amount of bone tissue in the skeleton or part of the skeleton. Osteoporosis is a lesion, not a specific disease. 'Osteoporotic' describes the slate of a bone or skeleton at a given time. Osteoporosis may be diagnosed subjectively by visual appraisal, or objectively by measurement of radiographs, sawn bones, or microscopic sections. This study was carried out to make clear of the influence of ovariectomy on time course of fibular osteoporosis in rats. Seven weeks after ovariectomy, osteoporosis was evident, when the size of the bone marrow cavities significantly increased and the width from the bone marrow cavity and cortex significantly decreased than normal.

  • Among the recent environmental pollution, indoor air pollution has an adverse effect on the health of indoor residents. Radon, one of the causes of indoor air pollution, is released from concrete, gypsum board and asbestos slate among building materials. Radon is a primary carcinogen and is a colorless, tasteless, odorless inert gas that adheres to airborne dust and enters the body through breathing. At this time, there is a risk of developing cancer if the alpha rays from the lononggas entering the human body destroys the lung tissue and is continuously exposed to a high concentration of lonon gas. The World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized the reduction of radon and its exposure to radon by classifying it as a first-level carcinogen, but many people have not recognized it yet, and the research is underdeveloped. Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the properties of adsorbed coconut radon to prevent the inflow of radon gas, which is an air pollution source of indoor air, and to prevent inflow into the human body.
