A one dimensional time dependent acid rain model considering size distribution of aerosols and hydrometeors is developed to predict observed chemical and physical properties of precipitation. Temporal variations of anions and cations observed are predicted fairly well with acid rain model simulations. It is found that aerosol depletion rates are highly dependent on aerosol sizes under the assumption of Marshall - Palmer raindrop size distribution. Also, the aerosol depletion during the initial rain event largely influences on ion concentrations in rainwaters.

Nanofluids have anomalously high thermal conductivities at very low fraction, strongly temperature-dependent and size-dependent conductivities, and three-fold higher critical heat flux than that of base fluids. Traditional conductivity theories such as the Maxwell or other macroscale approaches cannot explain why nanofluids have these intriguing features. So in this paper, we devise a theoretical model that accounts for the fundamental role of dynamic nanoparticles in nanofluids. The proposed model not only captures the concentration and temperature-dependent conductivity, but also predicts strongly size-dependent conductivity. Furthermore, we physically explain the new phenomena for nanofluids. In addition, based on a proposed model, the effects of various parameters such as the ratio of thermal conductivity of nanofluids to that of a base fluid, volume fraction, nanoparticle size, and temperature on the thermal conductivities of nanofluids are investigated.
Investigators have been perplexed with the thermal phenomena behind the recently discovered nanofluids, fluids with unprecedented stability of suspended nanoparticles although huge difference in the density of nanoparticles and fluid. For example, nanofluids have anomalously high thermal conductivities at very low fraction, strongly temperature-dependent and size-dependent conductivities, and three-fold higher critical heat flux than that of base fluids.
In this paper, the classical continuum mechanics is adopted and modified to be consistent with the unique behavior of micro/nano solids. At first, some kinematical principles are discussed to illustrate the effect of the discrete nature of the microstructure of micro/nano solids. The fundamental equations and relations of the modified couple stress theory are derived to illustrate the microstructural effects on nanostructures. Moreover, the effect of the material surface energy is incorporated into the modified continuum theory. Due to the reduced coordination of the surface atoms a residual stress field, namely surface pretension, is generated in the bulk structure of the continuum. The essential kinematical and kinetically relations of nano-continuums are derived and discussed. These essential relations are used to derive a size-dependent model for Mindlin functionally graded (FG) nano-plates. An analytical solution is derived to show the feasibility of the proposed size-dependent model. A parametric study is provided to express the effect of surface parameters and the effect of the microstructure couple stress on the bending behavior of a simply supported FG nano plate.
In the present work, an attempt is made to explore the effects of shear in-plane preload on the wave propagation response of small-scale plates containing nanofibers. The small-scale system is assumed to be embedded in an elastic matrix. The nonlocal elasticity is utilized in order to develop a size-dependent model of plates. The proposed plate model is able to describe both nanofiber effects and the influences of being at small-scales on the wave propagation response. The size-dependent differential equations are derived for motions along all directions. The size-dependent coupled equations are solved analytically to obtain the phase and group velocities of the small-scale plate under a shear in-plane preload. The effects of this shear preload in conjunction with nanofiber and size effects as well as the influences of the elastic matrix on the wave propagation response are analyzed in detail.
In this paper, the free vibrations of a short cylindrical nanotube made of piezoelectric material are studied based on the consistent couple stress theory and using the shear deformable cylindrical theory. This new model has only one length scale parameter and can consider the size effects of nanostructures in nanoscale. To model size effects in nanoscale, and considering the nanotube material which is piezoelectric, the consistent couple stress theory is used. First, using Hamilton's principle, the equations of motion and boundary condition of the piezoelectric cylindrical nanoshell are developed. Afterwards, using Navier approach and extended Kantorovich method (EKM), the governing equations of the system with simple-simple (S-S) and clamped-clamped (C-C) supports are solved. Afterwards, the effects of size parameter, geometric parameters (nanoshell length and thickness), and mechanical and electric properties (piezoelectric effect) on nanoshell vibrations are investigated. Results demonstrate that the natural frequency on nanoshell in nanoscale is extremely dependent on nanoshell size. Increase in size parameter, thickness and flexoelectric effect of the material leads to increase in frequency of vibrations. Moreover, increased nanoshell length and diameter leads to decreased vibration frequency.
We present a transient queue size distribution for $M/G/m/N$ queue with state dependent arrival rates, using the diffusion process with piecewise constant diffusion parameters, with state space [0, N] and elementary return boundaries at x = 0 and x = N. The model considered here contains not only many basic model but the practical models such as as two-node cyclic queue, repairmen model and overload control in communication system with finite storage buffer. For the accuracy check, we compare the approximation results with the exact and simulation results.

A grounding electrode has the transient grounding impedance characteristics against lightning surges. So the performance of grounding electrodes should be evaluated as a grounding impedance as well as the ground resistance. The frequency-dependent grounding impedance is varied with the shape and size of grounding electrode and is divided into both inductive and capacitive behaviors. This paper presents a theoretical analysis for the grounding impedance determined by the size of grounding electrode using the distributed parameter circuit model. EMTP and Matlab programs were used in calculating the frequency-dependent grounding impedances of vertical grounding electrodes. It was found that the frequency-dependent grounding characteristics of vertical grounding electrodes are characterized by the distributed parameters which are changed in the dimension of grounding electrodes.

This paper analyzes the non-stationary vibration and super-harmonic resonances in nonlinear dynamic motion of viscoelastic nano-resonators. For this purpose, a new coupled size-dependent model is developed for a plate-shape nano-resonator made of nonlinear viscoelastic material based on modified coupled stress theory. The virtual work induced by viscous forces obtained in the framework of the Leaderman integral for the size-independent and size-dependent stress tensors. With incorporating the size-dependent potential energy, kinetic energy, and an external excitation force work based on Hamilton's principle, the viscous work equation is balanced. The resulting size-dependent viscoelastically coupled equations are solved using the expansion theory, Galerkin method and the fourth-order Runge-Kutta technique. The Hilbert-Huang transform is performed to examine the effects of the viscoelastic parameter and initial excitation values on the nanosystem free vibration. Furthermore, the secondary resonance due to the super-harmonic motions are examined in the form of frequency response, force response, Poincare map, phase portrait and fast Fourier transforms. The results show that the vibration of viscoelastic nanosystem is non-stationary at higher excitation values unlike the elastic ones. In addition, ignoring the small-size effects shifts the secondary resonance, significantly.
Dynamic responses of porous piezoelectric and metal foam nano-size plates have been examined via a four variables plate formulation. Diverse pore dispersions named uniform, symmetric and asymmetric have been selected. The piezoelectric nano-size plate is subjected to an external electrical voltage. Nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT) which includes two scale factors has been utilized to provide size-dependent model of foam nanoplate. The presented plate formulation verifies the shear deformations impacts and it gives fewer number of field components compared to first-order plate model. Hamilton's principle has been utilized for deriving the governing equations. Achieved results by differential quadrature (DQ) method have been verified with those reported in previous studies. The influences of nonlocal factor, strain gradients, electrical voltage, dynamical load frequency and pore type on forced responses of metal and piezoelectric foam nano-size plates have been researched.
