  • A comprehensive study of photon interaction features has been made for some alloys containing Pd and Ag content to evaluate its possible use as alternative gamma radiations shielding material. The mass attenuation coefficient (${\mu}/{\rho}$) of the present alloys was measured at various photon energies between 81 keV-1333 keV utilizing HPGe detector. The measured ${\mu}/{\rho}$ values were compared to those of theoretical and computational (MCNPX code) results. The results exhibited that the ${\mu}/{\rho}$ values of the studied alloys are in the same line with results of WinXCOM software and MCNPX code results at all energies. Moreover, Pd75/Ag25 alloy sample has the maximum radiation protection efficiency (about 53% at 81 keV) and lowest half value layer, which shows that Pd75/Ag25 has superior gamma radiation shielding performance among the other compared alloys.

  • Biochar is a novel carbon based material derived from waste that shows promising properties for several applications. In this paper we investigate its potential use as a low cost, greener alternative to commonly used aggregates employed to enhance the neutron shielding performance of concrete. Monte Carlo simulations are performed with the PHITS code to estimate the neutron attenuation of blank and biochar-reinforced concrete exposed to high energy neutrons. We find that the shielding performance of concrete with 15% biochar is comparable with commonly used materials such as Boron Carbide at 20% and exceeds that of Basalt fibers with the same concentration, making these composites an interesting greener alternative to current solutions. A combination of biochar and heavier fillers also show extremely promising performance.

  • A monte carlo simulation about shielding material and thickness of the syringe shield for radiation shield was performed. As a result of analysis, high atomic number materials such as tungsten, lead and bismuth have the highest shielding effect. However, $^{18}F$, $^{67}Ga$ and $^{111}In$ show high energy distribution in the region with thin shielding thickness. As the thickness of shielding materials increased, the energy distribution decreased due to reduction of ${\gamma}$-ray. In the case of low atomic number materials, they, showed energy distribution from highest to lowest, were barium sulfate, steel, stainless, iron and copper. Aluminum, plastic, concrete and water showed diverse aspect. they showed relatively high energy distribution because of increased ${\gamma}$-ray that penetrate the shield.

  • As an alternative evaluation method of electromagnetic shielding properties, the material parameters are considered in determining the qualitative value of shielding effectiveness. The specimens are metallized nylon fabrics with the thickness of about 0.1 mm and the electrical conductivities in the range from 6.4$\times$10~2.4$\times$10(sup)5 mhos/m. On the basis of shielding theory, the shielding effectiveness (which is a sum of reflection loss and absorption loss) has been determined from the material parameters of the barrier sheets. For the conductive fabrics, the dominant shield mechanism is predicted to be reflection loss, which shows an increasing function of electrical conductivity. Comparing these theoretical value with the directly measured surface impedances, the error range is found to be within 10 dB, which demonstrates that the proposed material-parameters method can be a convenient way to determine the electromagnetic shielding properties.

  • Lead(Pb), which is currently mainly used for shielding purposes in the medical radiation, has excellent radiation shielding functions, but is continuously exposed to radiation directly or indirectly due to the harmfulness of lead itself to the human body and the inconvenience caused by its heavy weight. Research on shielding materials that are human-friendly, lightweight, and convenient to use that can block risks and replace lead is continuously being conducted. In this study, based on the commonly used polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film and the fabric material used in actual radiation protective clothing, a multi-layer thin film was realized through sputtering and vacuum deposition of bismuth, tungsten, and tin, which are metal materials that can shield radiation. Thus, a shielding film was produced and its applicability as a radiation shielding material was evaluated. The radiation shielding film was manufactured by establishing the optimized conditions for each shielding material while controlling the applied voltage, roll driving speed, and gas supply amount to manufacture the shielding film. The adhesion between the parent material and the shielding metal thin film was confirmed by Cross-cut 100/100, and the stability of the thin film was confirmed through a hot water test for 1 hour to measure the change of the thin film over time. The shielding performance of the finally realized shielding film was measured by the Korea association for radiation application (KARA), and the test conditions (inverse wide beam, tube voltage 50 kV, half layer 1.828 mmAl) were set to obtain an attenuation ratio of 16.4 (initial value 0.300 mGy/s, measured value 0.018 mGy/s) and damping ratio 4.31 (initial value 0.300 mGy/s, measured value 0.069 mGy/s) were obtained. by securing process efficiency for future commercialization, light and shielding films and fabrics were used to lay the foundation for the application of films to radiation protective clothing or construction materials with shielding functions.

  • The modifier proposed in this research is for enhancing the affinity of the glass component with the high polymer resin and the molecular weight. The particle packing, tensile strength and shielding performance of the shielding sheet made of the tungsten oxide were evaluated. The best effect can be obtained when 20% of the modifier PMMA used to improve the shielding performance and maintain the affinity and strength with the sealant is mixed. The fusion of the materials presented in this study and the mass production of the shielding sheet through the modifier are possible and will contribute to the production of lightweight shielding sheets in the future.

  • In order to improve the electromagnetic shielding rate of Carbon Fiber (CF), it was produced using the nickel nano-powder impregnating method. Using two types of nickel powder having thicknesses of 50 ㎛ and 100 ㎛, and a thermoplastic elastomer resin, a compound containing 10-20% nickel content was mixed and then manufactured through an extruder. The CF coated with the compound was woven and manufactured using a 1-ply specimen. The final nickel content of the specimen was verified using TGA and the distribution of nickel powder on the CF surface was verified using SEM. The metal shows a high shielding rate in the low-frequency band, but the shielding rate decreases at higher-frequency bands. The CF improves at the higher frequency band, and metals reflect electromagnetic waves while carbon absorbs electromagnetic waves. The study of shielding materials, which are stronger and lighter than metal, by using CF lighter than metal and enabling the shielding rate from low-frequency band to high-frequency band, confirmed that the larger the area coated with nickel nano-powder, the better the electromagnetic shielding performance. In particular, CF coated with a thickness of 100 ㎛ has a shielding rate similar to that of copper and can also be used for EV/HEV automotive cables and other applications in the future.

  • In this study, we intended to achieve both antibacterial properties and electromagnetic shielding using the Al-doped ZnO (AZO) films. FTS (Facial Target Sputtering) magnetron sputtering was used for the AZO thin films instead of the conventional RF sputtering because the FTS sputtering could avoid the damage for the plasma as well as fabrication of thin films with a high quality. The 300-nm thick AZO thin films grown on glass substrate showed a resistivity of about $7{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}-cm$ and a transmittance of about 90% at a wavelength of 550 nm. AZO thin films were investigated for the electromagnetic shielding effectiveness measured by 2-port network method at 1.5 ~ 3 GHz. The AZO (300 nm)/glass films showed an EMI shielding effectiveness of approximately 27 dB. An antibacterial effect was measured by the film attachment method (JIS Z 2801). The percent reductions of bacteria by AZO films were 99.99668% and 99.99999% against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, respectively.

  • In this paper, the shield plate was applied to the wireless power transfer (WPT) system. Then we compared transmission efficiency of WPT system between transmitter and receiver coils. The superconductor coil was applied to transmitter and receiver coils in order to increase the transmission efficiency of WPT. The superconductor coil was more effective to power transmission as its current density was higher than normal conductor coil. Efficiency of WPT between transmitter and receiver coils was changed by a quality of shielding. We used the shielding materials such as glass, iron, steels, aluminum etc. The efficiency of WPT system was depended on the shielding materials of transmitter and receiver coils. As a result, magnetic material such as aluminum, iron reduced the magnetic flux density and the efficiency of WPT. remarkably, but in non-magnetic material such as glass and plastic, the efficiency of WPT was unaffected.
