  • In this paper, bending-stretching analysis of thick functionally graded piezoelectric rectangular plates is studied using the higher-order shear and normal deformable plate theory. On the basis of this theory, Legendre polynomials are used for approximating the components of displacement field. Also, the effects of both normal and shear deformations are encountered in the theory. The governing equations are derived using the principle of virtual work and variational approach. It is assumed that plate is made of piezoelectric materials with functionally graded distribution of material properties. Hence, exponential function is used to modify mechanical and electrical properties through the thickness of the plate. Finally, the effect of material properties, electrical boundary conditions and dimensions are investigated on the static response of plate. Also, it is shown that results of the presented model are close to the three dimensional elasticity solutions.

  • Single- and multi-span orthotropic functionally graded hollow cylinders subjected to axisymmetrical bending are investigated on the basis of a unified shear deformable shell theory, in which the transverse displacement is expressed by means of a general shape function. To approach the through-thickness inhomogeneity of the hollow cylinder, a laminated model is employed. The shape function therefore shall be determined for each fictitious layer. To improve the computational efficiency, we resort to a transfer matrix method. Based on the principle of minimum potential energy, equilibrium equations are established, which are then solved analytically using the transfer matrix method for arbitrary boundary conditions. Numerical comparisons among a third-order shear deformable shell theory, an exact elastic theory and the present theory are provided for a simply supported hollow cylinder, from which the present theory turns out to be superior in stress estimation. Distributions of displacements and stresses in single- and three-span hollow cylinders with different boundary conditions are also illustrated in numerical examples.

  • An improved shear deformable thin-walled curved beam theory to overcome the drawback of currently available beam theories is newly proposed for the spatially coupled free vibration and elastic analysis. For this, the displacement field considering the shear deformation effects is presented by introducing displacement parameters defined at the centroid and shear center axes. Next the elastic strain and kinetic energies considering the shear effects due to the shear forces and the restrained warping torsion are rigorously derived. Then the equilibrium equations are consistently derived for curved beams with non-symmetric thin-walled sections. It should be noticed that this formulation can be easily reduced to the warping-free beam theory by simply putting the sectional properties associated with warping to zero for curved beams with L- or T-shaped sections. Finally in order to illustrate the validity and the accuracy of this study, finite element solutions using the isoparametric curved beam elements are presented and compared with those in available references and ABAQUS's shell elements.

  • In this paper, an exact analytical solution is developed for the analysis of the post-buckling non-linear response of simply supported deformable symmetric composite beams. For this, a new theory of higher order shear deformation is used for the analysis of composite beams in post-buckling. Unlike any other shear deformation beam theories, the number of functions unknown in the present theory is only two as the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, while three unknowns are needed in the case of the other beam theories. The theory presents a parabolic distribution of transverse shear stresses, which satisfies the nullity conditions on both sides of the beam without a shear correction factor. The shear effect has a significant contribution to buckling and post-buckling behaviour. The results of this analysis show that classical and first-order theories underestimate the amplitude of the buckling whereas all the theories considered in this study give results very close to the static response of post-buckling. The numerical results obtained with the novel theory are not only much more accurate than those obtained using the Euler-Bernoulli theory but are almost comparable to those obtained using higher order theories, Accuracy and effectiveness of the current theory.

  • A high precision shear deformable triangular element has been proposed for free vibration analysis of composite trapezoidal plates. The element has twelve nodes at the three sides and four nodes inside the element. Initially the element has fifty-five degrees of freedom, which has been reduced to forty-eight by eliminating the degrees of freedom of the internal nodes through static condensation. Plates having different side ratios (b/a), boundary conditions, thickness ratios (h/a=0.01, 0.1 and 0.2), number of layers and fibre angle orientations have been analyzed by the proposed shear locking free element. Trapezoidal laminate with concentrated mass at the centre has also been analyzed. An efficient mass lumping scheme has been recommended, where the effect of rotary inertia has been included. For validation of the present element and formulation few results of isotropic trapezoidal plate and square composite laminate have been compared with those obtained from open literatures. The numerical results for composite trapezoidal laminate have been given as new results.

  • For the first time, the higher-order shear and normal deformable plate theory (HOSNDPT) is used for the vibration and flutter analyses of the multilayer functionally graded graphene platelets reinforced composite (FG-GPLRC) plates under supersonic airflow. For modeling the supersonic airflow, the linear piston theory is adopted. In HOSNDPT, Legendre polynomials are used to approximate the components of the displacement field in the thickness direction. So, all stress and strain components are encountered. Either uniform or three kinds of non-uniform distribution of graphene platelets (GPLs) into polymer matrix are considered. The Young modulus of the FG-GPLRC plate is estimated by the modified Halpin-Tsai model, while the Poisson ratio and mass density are determined by the rule of mixtures. The Hamilton's principle is used to obtain the governing equations of motion and the associated boundary conditions of the plate. For solving the plate's equations of motion, the Galerkin approach is applied. A comparison for the natural frequencies obtained based on the present investigation and those of three-dimensional elasticity theory shows a very good agreement. The flutter boundaries for FG-GPLRC plates based on HOSNDPT are described and the effects of GPL distribution patterns, the geometrical parameters and the weight fraction of GPLs on the flutter frequencies and flutter aerodynamic pressure of the plate are studied in detail. The obtained results show that by increasing 0.5% of GPLs into polymer matrix, the flutter aerodynamic pressure increases approximately 117%, 145%, 166% and 196% for FG-O, FG-A, UD and FG-X distribution patterns, respectively.

  • In this paper, the free vibrations of a short cylindrical nanotube made of piezoelectric material are studied based on the consistent couple stress theory and using the shear deformable cylindrical theory. This new model has only one length scale parameter and can consider the size effects of nanostructures in nanoscale. To model size effects in nanoscale, and considering the nanotube material which is piezoelectric, the consistent couple stress theory is used. First, using Hamilton's principle, the equations of motion and boundary condition of the piezoelectric cylindrical nanoshell are developed. Afterwards, using Navier approach and extended Kantorovich method (EKM), the governing equations of the system with simple-simple (S-S) and clamped-clamped (C-C) supports are solved. Afterwards, the effects of size parameter, geometric parameters (nanoshell length and thickness), and mechanical and electric properties (piezoelectric effect) on nanoshell vibrations are investigated. Results demonstrate that the natural frequency on nanoshell in nanoscale is extremely dependent on nanoshell size. Increase in size parameter, thickness and flexoelectric effect of the material leads to increase in frequency of vibrations. Moreover, increased nanoshell length and diameter leads to decreased vibration frequency.

  • This paper deals with the buckling load of antisymmetric angle-ply and cross-ply laminated rectangular plates. Buckling analysis is preformed for a simply supported, shear deformable laminated plate subjected to uniaxial compression and biaxial compression combined with uniform lateral pression. The shear deformation theory is considered to figure out a more exact behavior of laminated plates exactly. The purposes of this study are to formulate anisotropic laminated plates with shear deformation and to investigate the buckling load according to the various variables of laminated plates by using the exact solutions for anisotropic laminated plates having simply supported boundary.
