  • Structural insulated panels, which are structurally performed panels consisting of a plastic insulation bonded between two structural panel facings are one of emerging products with a viewpoint of its energy and construction efficiencies. These components are applicable to fabricated wood structures. By now, there are few technical documents regulated structural performance and engineering criteria in domestic market. This study was conducted to suggest fundamental reports such as racking resistance, axial capacity, transverse load capacity, and lintel load capacity for SIPs. Test results showed that maximum load was 44.3kN, allowable load was 14.7kN for racking resistance, and that maximum load was 137.6kN, allowable load was 37.4kN/m for axial compression capacity. For transverse load capacity, test results showed $10.3kN/m^2$ of maximum load, $3.4kN/m^2$ of allowable load. For lintel load capacity for SIPs dependent to lengths, allowable loads were 20.4kN for 600mm long lintel, 23.9kN for 1,200mm long lintel, 19.3kN for 1,800mm long lintel, and 2,400mm long lintel had 14.1kN of allowable load. In the near future, when the allowable load for wall application is established, SIPs is considered to substitute the existent post-and-lintel construction to bearing wall structure.

  • In a shotcrete support system, the cooperation of the ground and the shotcrete lining makes it possible to transfer the shear stress to the shotcrete lining, which is dedicated to form a stable structure. In this study, a homogeneous model ground with constant strength was produced by using gypsum and the tunnel was excavated with a top heading method under the definite initial stress. During the excavation, the stress in the ground around the tunnel and the deformation of shotcrete lining were measured, The tensile stress was generated in tangential direction in the ground near the tunnel and in the shotcrete lining due to tunnel excavation. This shows the unified behavior of the ground and shotcrete lining, which is the most typical characteristic of the shotcrete support. As a result, the rates of in-situ stress during the excavation at a top boundary line was 9% and at top arch heading 15%. It was 48% right after excavating the heading and 94% before cutting the bench.

  • Stability of cut-slope, the orientation and dimension of which are gradually changed, has been analyzed by employing the cross-section method capable of comprehensibly considering the lithological, structural and mechanical characteristics of slope rock. Lithological fragility is investigated by inspecting the drilled core logs and BIPS image has been taken to delineate the rock structure. Engineering properties of drilled-core including the joint shear strength have been also measured. Potential failure modes of cut-slope and failure-induced joints are identified by performing the stereographic projection analysis. Traces of potential failure-induced joints are drawn on the cross-section which depicts the excavated geometry of cut-slope. Considering the distribution of potential plane failure-induced joint traces blocks of plane failure mode are hypothetically formed. The stabilities and required reinforcements of plane failure blocks located at the different excavation depth have been calculated to confirm the applicability of the cross-section method for the optimum cut-slope design.

  • In this study, scaled model tests were performed to investigate the stability of an asymmetrical twin tunnels constructed in rock mass comprising alternating layers of sandstone and shale. Each of tunnels had a differently shaped section, where the one was already constructed tunnel including lining structure but the other was planned to be under construction. Four types of test models which had respectively different pillar widths and loading conditions were experimented, where both crack initiating pressures and deformation behaviors around tunnels were investigated. The cracks of pillar mainly began to appear at the interfaces of alternating layers, following additional shear displacement between layers was confirmed as one of the most important factors of pillar failure in case of the model of pillar width 0.5D. The models with shallower pillar widths proved to be unstable because of lower crack initiating pressures and more tunnel convergences than the models with thicker pillar widths. The failure and deformation behaviors of tunnels were also dependent on the loading conditions, where the model of coefficient of lateral pressure 1.0 was more stable than the other model. Futhermore, the results of FLAC analysis were qualitatively coincident with the experimental results.

  • This paper describes experimental work to control supersonic jet noise using a mesh screen that is placed at the nozzle exit plane. The mesh screen is a wire-gauze screen that is made of long stainless wires with a very small diameter. The nozzle pressure ratio is varied to obtain the supersonic jets which are operated in a wide range of over-expanded to moderately under-expanded jets. In order to perturb mainly the initial jet shear layer, the hole is perforated in the central part of the mesh screen. The hole size is varied to investigate the noise control effectiveness of the mesh screen. A schlieren optical system is used to visualize the flow fields of supersonic jet with and without the mesh screen device. Acoustic measurement is performed to obtain the OASPL and noise spectra. The results obtained show that the present mesh screen device leads to a substantial suppression of jet screech tones. The hole size is an important factor in reducing the supersonic jet noise. For over-expanded jets, the noise control effectiveness of the mesh screen appears more significant, compared to correctly and under-expanded jets

  • It is recognized that the dynamic of a structure is affected by the characteristics of the soil layer and foundation. However the design codes for the seismic design of structures are partially reflecting the caharcteristics of the soil layers due to the inherent complexity of them and the lack of systematic study results for the foundation-soil system, and leading to unconservative or too conservative results. In this study, the kinematic interaction effects of foundation-soil system was investigated for the seismic analyses of structures estimating the effects of the shear wave velocity, the depth of the soil layer, the embedment of a foundation and pile foundation, and the modified classification criteria of soil layers are proposed for the reasonable seismic analyses of structures considering the characteristics of soil layers and foundations. For the embedded medium or large foundations (including pile foundations), at least 60m soil layer below the foundation should be considered for the seismic analyses of structures to tate into account the kinematic interaction effects of the foundation-soil system, and also the rocking motion of foundation-soil system with or without piles should be included in the seismic analyses of structures.

  • This study investigates the effect of the outrigger wall reinforced with post-tension on reducing differential column shortening. Since the outrigger wall is a concrete structure, the effect of its long-term behavior should be considered. The long-term behavior of the outrigger wall increases differential column shortening and decreases the shear force acting on the outrigger. When the stiffness of the outrigger becomes small, the effect of its long-term behavior increases. Furthermore, a method of reinforcing with post-tension to reduce differential column shortening is proposed. Following the analysis, it was confirmed that the post-tension method shows a significant reduction in the differential column shortening. This study shows that the effect of the outrigger wall reinforced with post-tension on reducing differential column shortening increases with the prestressing force of tendon.

  • Four types of experiments were performed to check the similitude of member behavior between prototype and 1 /10 scale models : (1) Test of slender columns with P-$\Delta$ effect, (2) Test of short columns with and without confinement steel, (3) Test of simple beams without stirrups, and (4) 'T-beam test. Based on the results of experiments, the conclusions were made as follows : (1) The P-$\Delta$ effect of slender columns can be almost exactly represented by 1/10 scale model. (2) The effect of confinement on short columns by the hoop steel can be also roughly simulated by 1/10 scale model. (3) The failure modes of simple beams without stirrups are brittle shear failures in prototype whereas those of 1/10 scale models are the ductile yielding of tension steel followed by large diagonal tension cracking and compressive concrete failure. (4) The behaviors of prototype and 1/10 scale model in T-beams appear very similar.

  • The rheological properties of an exopolysaccharide, EPS-R, produced by the marine bacterium Hahella chejuensis strain 96CJ 10356 were investigated. The $E_{24}$ of $0.5\%$ EPS-R was $89.2\%$, which was higher than that observed in commercial polysaccharides such as xanthan gum ($67.8\%$), gellan gum ($2.01\%$) or sodium alginate ($1.02\%$). Glucose and galactose are the main Sugars in EPS-R, with a molar ratio of ${\~}1:6.8$, xylose and ribose are minor sugar components. The average molecular mass, as determined by gel filtration chromatography, was $2.2{\times}10^3$ KDa, The intrinsic viscosities of EPS-R were calculated to be 16.5 and 15.9 dL/g using the Huggins and Kraemer equations, respectively, with a 2.3 dL/g overlap. In terms of rigidity, the conformation of EPS-R was similar to that of caboxymethyl cellulose ($5.0{\times}10^{-2}$). The rheological behavior of EPS-R dispersion indicated that the formation of a structure intermediate between that of a random-coil polysaccharide and a weak gel. The aqueous dispersion of EPS-R at concentrations ranging from 0.25 to $1.0\%$ (w/w) showed a marked shear-thinning property in accordance with Power-law behavior. In aqueous dispersions of $1.0\%$ EPS-R, the consistency index (K) and flow behavior index (n) were 1,410 and 0.73, respectively. EPS-R was Stable to pH and salts.

  • This study is conserned for the optimum design of reinforced concrete slab-beam-column structures with multi-storys and multi-bays by Direct Method. Flexural and shear strength, sectional size, and steel ratio etc., were considered as the design-constraints and the cost function was taken as to objective function. They became high degree nonlinear problems. Using SLP as an analytical method of nonlinear optimal problems, an optimal algorithm was developed in this study and the algorithm was applied to the optimization of reinforced concrete structure system of 5 storys. The result converged to a optimal solution with 3 to 5 iterations, and proved that economical design could be possible when compared with conventional designs.
