  • In general, the earlier methods for the design of MAXFLAT FIR filters have existent problems due to the approximation algorithms used to approach MAXFLAT(maximally flat) response in the passband and the stopband.. The proposed approach advanced by using of MAXSHCUT(maximally sharp cutoff) condition in this paper clearly overcomes these problems. In this approach, we use a key parameter represented with filter-order and cutoff-frequency parameters for obtaining the lowpass filters with the MAXFLAT and MAXSHCUT characteristics in the frequency domain. Consequently, this design technique leads to new MAXFLAT and MAXSHCUT FIR digital filter, which can achieve sharp-cutoff responses with the stopband attenuation exceeding 100 dB almost everywhere.

  • Thermo-acoustic waves can be thermally generated in a compressible flow field by rapid heating and cooling, and chemical reaction near the boundary walls. This mechanism is very important in the space environment in which natural convection does not exist. Also this may be a significant factor for heat transfer when the fluids are close to the thermodynamic critical point. In this study, the generation and transmission characteristics of thermo-acoustic waves in an air-filled confined domain with two-step pulsed heating are studied numerically. The governing equations are discretized using control volume method, and are solved using PISO algorithm and second-order upwind scheme. For the purpose of stable solution, time step was set to the order of $1\times10_-9s,\;and\;grids\;are\;50\times2000$. Results show that temperature and pressure distributions of fluid near the boundary wall subjected to a rapid heating are increased abruptly, and the induced thermo-acoustic wave propagates through the fluid until it decays due to viscous and heat dissipation. Pressure waves have sharp front shape and decay with a long tail in the case of step heating, but these waves have sharp pin shape in the case of pulsed heating.

  • The aerodynamics of blunt bodies with separation at the sharp corner of the leading edge and reattachment on the body side are particularly important in civil engineering applications. In recent years, a number of experimental and numerical studies have become available on the aerodynamics of a rectangular cylinder with chord-to-thickness ratio equal to 5 (BARC). Despite the interest in the topic, a widely accepted set of guidelines for grid generation about these blunt bodies is still missing. In this work a new, well resolved Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) around the BARC body at Re=3000 is presented and its results compared to previous DNSs of the same case but with different numerical approaches and mesh. Despite the simulations use different numerical approaches, mesh and domain dimensions, the main discrepancies are ascribed to the different grid spacings employed. While a more rigorous analysis is envisaged, where the order of accuracy of the schemes are kept the same while grid spacings are varied alternately along each spatial direction, this represents a first attempt in the study of the influence of spatial resolution in the Direct Numerical Simulation of flows around elongated rectangular cylinders with sharp corners.

  • In the management of groundwater in coastal areas, saltwater intrusion associated with extensive groundwater pumping, is an important problem. The groundwater optimization model is an advanced method to study the aquifer and decide the optimal pumping rates or optimal well locations. Cheng and Park gave the analytical solutions to the optimization problems basing on Strack's analytical solution. However, the analytical solutions have some limitations of the property of aquifer, boundary conditions, and so on. A simulation-optimization numerical method presented in this study can deal with non-homogenous aquifers and various complex boundary conditions. This simulation-optimization model includes the sharp interface solution which solves the same governing equation with Strack's analytical solution, therefore, the freshwater head and saltwater thickness should be in the same conditions, that can lead to the comparable results in optimal pumping rates and optimal well locations for both of the solutions. It is noticed that the analytical solutions can only be applied on the infinite domain aquifer, while it is impossible to get a numerical model with infinite domain. To compare the numerical model with the analytical solutions, calculation of the equivalent boundary flux was planted into the numerical model so that the numerical model can have the same conditions in steady state with analytical solutions.

  • The scatting problem by E-polarized plane wave with obique incidence on a tapered resistive strip grating with zero resistivity(perfectly conducting) at strip-edges is analyzed by the method of moments in the spectral domain. Then the induced surface current density on the strip is expanded in a series of Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. The expasion coefficients are calculated numerically in the spectral domain, the numerical results of the geometric-optical reflection coefficient for the tapered resistivity in this paper are compared with those for the existing uniform resistivity. And the position of sharp variation points in the magnitude of the geometric-optical reflection coefficient can be moved by varying the incident angle and the strip spacing, It is found out that these sparp variation points are due to the transition of higher mode between the propagation mode and the evanescent mode.

  • Hayabusa, the Japanese asteroid sample returning mission, acquired more than 1400 scientific images of its target asteroid (25143) Itokawa using the Asteroid Multi-band Imaging Camera (AMICA). It took images at a wide coverage of the phase angle a (Sun-Itokawa-Hayabusa) from $a{\sim}0^{\circ}$ to ${\sim}35^{\circ}$, providing a unique opportunity for studying the opposition effect (a sharp surge in brightness of asteroidal surface). Here we present a study of the opposition effect on Itokawa using the AMICA multi-band data. We found that (1) the opposition strength near the opposition is independent of the incident/emission angles of the light, also (2) it weakly depends on the wavelength showing the strongest surge around 0.7 um, and (3) the reflectance increases linearly at a>$1.5^{\circ}$ while nonlinearly at a<$1.5^{\circ}$ as approaching the opposition point. In particular, we noticed that the increasing rate has a correlation with the reflectance in the nonlinear domain whereas no detectable correlation with the reflectance in the linear domain. From these results, we conjecture that the coherent backscattering opposition effect is a dominant mechanism for the nonlinear opposition surge at a<$1.5^{\circ}$ while shadow hiding opposition effect is responsible for the linear opposition surge at a>$1.5^{\circ}$.

  • The CREAMS (Circulation Research of the East Asian Marginal Sea) survey in 1999 revealed a sharp mid-depth discontinuity of the phosphate:silicate ratio in all basins of the East/Japan Sea. Incidentally, this discontinuity layer corresponds to the oxygen minimum layer. Directly below the discontinuity layer, oxygen concentration is increased. This increase in oxygen concentration is interpreted as a proof of intermediate water formation. Oxygen minimum indicates that the water parcel is old and stable against mixing. So it seems be an efficient barrier to vertical exchange of materials. This means that, once materials enter the lower domain, they rarely return to the upper domain. Therefore, the biogeochemistry of the East/Japan Sea depends heavily on material input through the Korea Strait, and flux is expected to be sensitive to the climate change. As a result, the East/Japan Sea ecosystem seems vulnerable to tipping (regime shift), which occurred on a decadal time scale.

  • In this paper. we propose the method of Scene Change Detection for video sequence using the DC components and the moving vectors in the Macro Blocks in the DCT blocks. The proposed method detects the Scene Change which would not be related with the specific sequences in the compressed MPEG domain. To do this. we define new metrics for Scene Change Detection using the features of picture component and detect the exact Scene Change point of B-pictures using the characteristics of B-picture's sharp response for the moving vectors. In brief, we will detect the cut point using I-picture and the gradual scene changes such as dissolve, fade, wipe, etc. As a results, our proposed method shows good test results for the various MPEG sequences.

  • The study of Cochlear biomechanics is to clearly define three biomechanical principles of the Cochlea : Activity, Nonlinearity and Feedback. In this article, the Cochlea is linearly and actively modelled in one dimensional time domain. The sharp tunning of the Basilar Membrane displacement is shown when the amplifying activity of hair cells is added to the model. The amplified energy of the travelling displacement wave is emitted throughout the Cochlear fluid, so that the model becomes unstable. A new technique is introduced to reduce strong echos fro the Helicotrema. It makes the model less unstable. Both pure and click tones are used as input stimuli onto the ear durm. When the model is normal, the click response of the model shows that the backward emission of the amplified fluid pressure has mainly the echos from the Helicotrema. However, when the linear and active model is assumed to be abnormal, that is, some of hair cells are damaged not to produce the active process, the effect of the hair cell damage is resulted in the Oto-acoustic emission. The frequency response of the abnormally emitted sound pressure shows that the Oto-acoustic emission has the information about the characteristic frequency of the damaged hair cell. The main aim of this paper is to demonstrate the active biomechanics of the Chchlea in the time domain.

  • A convex $RP^n$-structure on a smooth anifold M is a representation of M as a quotient of a convex domain $\Omega \subset RP^n$ by a discrete group $\Gamma$ of collineations of $RP^n$ acting properly on $\Omega$. When M is a closed surface of genus g > 1, then the equivalence classes of such structures form a moduli space $B(M)$ homeomorphic to an open cell of dimension 16(g-1) (Goldman [2]). This cell contains the Teichmuller space $T(M)$ of M and it is of interest to know what of the rich geometric structure extends to $B(M)$. In [3], a symplectic structure on $B(M)$ is defined, which extends the symplectic structure on $T(M)$ defined by the Weil-Petersson Kahler form.
