  • In order to improve the ship maneuverability, It is important to estimate precisely the hydrodynamic coefficients of added mass forces acting on a ship especially in shallow waters, and simple methods for predicting such hydrodynamic forces Is also very desirable. In the previous paper using 3-Dimension potential flow theory, it has been demonstrated that potential calculation is available to estimate added mass coefficients. The present work is aimed at the suggestion of the simplified formulas for predicting the translation and lateral motion of added mass coefficients in shallow water. So, 3-D potential flow theory is also used to calculate the added mass coefficients in deep and shallow waters for Series 60 model which has 5 different kinds of block coefficients (0.6-0.8), SR196 model and T/S HANNARA. After some series computation, simplified formulas for Predicting the added mass force in shallow waters is suggested based on the computation results of Series 60 model. The formulas consist of the combination of principal dimensions and the water depth; d/B, Cb, d/H. The predicted results are compared with the Computation results for SR196 model and T/S HANNARA. The precision of predicted results by simplified formulas are good enough for the practical use. (d/B : draft-Breadth ratio, d/H draft-Water depth ratio, Cb : Block coefficients).

  • Multi-channel seismic survey, which has been mainly employed in oil prospecting, is carried out as a high resolution shallow marine seismic exploration. Fault drop as small as 1 m can be resolved by employing high-resolution seismic survey. Similar to the effect of shallow inhomogenities in the land seismic data, due to occurrence of swell quite often higher than 1 m, shallow marine seismic data tend to be severely degraded. Suppression of such a swell effect is critical in processing of steps of marine seismic shallow high-resolution data. Compared to the moving average depth method, a newly developed method using cross-correlation technique is found out to be very effective in increasing the resolution of the shallow reflection events by accuratly elucidating the depth of sea bottom.

  • In this study, vegetation succession and the rate of consequent topsoil development were investigated in shallow landslide scars of sedimentary rock slopes covered by volcanic ashes and pumice in Kagoshima prefecture, Japan. Seven shallow landslide scars of different ages were selected as study areas. In the initial period after the occurrence of a shallow landslide, deciduous broad-leaved trees such as Mallotus japonicus or Callicarpa mollis were occupied in the areas. Approximately 30 years after the landslide, evergreen broad-leaved trees such as Cinnamomum japonicum invaded in the areas, already existed present deciduous broad-leaved trees. After 50 years, the summit of the canopy comprised evergreen broad-leaved trees such as Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii and Machilus thunbergii. Moreover, the diversity of vegetation invading the site reached the maximum after 15 years, followed by a decrease and stability in the number of trees. The total basal areas under vegetation increased with time. It was concluded that the vegetation community reaches the climax stage approximately 50 years after the occurrence of a shallow landslide in the study areas, in terms of the Fisher-Williams index of diversity (${\alpha}$) and the prevalence of evergreen broad-leaved trees. Moreover, according to the results of topsoil measurement in the study areas, the topsoil was formed at the rate of 0.31 cm/year. The development of topsoil usually functions to improve the multi-faceted functions of a forest. However, when the increased depth of topsoil exceeds the stability threshold, the conditions for a shallow landslide occurrence are satisfied. Therefore, we indicated to control the depth of topsoil and strengthen its resistance by forest management in order to restrain the occurrence of shallow landslides.

  • In order to examine the characteristic of shallow failure in cut slopes composed of weathered granite soil, this study calculated critical permeability coefficient according to rainfall characteristic in Korea, performed stability analysis according to the representative physical properties of weathered granite soil distributed in Korea such as horizontal distance to the failure surface of cut slope, slope inclination, slope height, and the depth of wetting by rainfall, and analyzed the results. In the results of analyzing critical permeability coefficient, when the local rainfall characteristic was considered, the maximum critical permeability coefficient was $7.16{\times}10^{-4}cm/sec$. We judged that shallow failure according to wetting depth should be considered when rainfall below the critical rainfall intensity lasts longer than the minimum rainfall duration in cut slopes composed of weathered granite soil, which had a critical permeability coefficient lower than the maximum critical permeability coefficient. Furthermore, using simulated failure surface, this study could understand the characteristic of shallow failure in cut slopes based on the change in slope safety factor according to horizontal distance, wetting depth, and strength parameter.

  • Further scaling the semiconductor devices down to low dozens of nanometer needs the extremely shallow depth in junction and the intentional counter-doping in the silicon gate. Conventional ion beam ion implantation has some disadvantages and limitations for the future applications. In order to solve them, therefore, plasma source ion implantation technique has been considered as a promising new method for the high throughputs at low energy and the fabrication of the ultra-shallow junctions. In this paper, we study about the effects of DC bias and base pressure as a process parameter. The diluted mixture gas (5% $PH_3/H_2$) was used as a precursor source and chamber is used for vacuum pressure conditions. After ion doping into the Si wafer(100), the samples were annealed via rapid thermal annealing, of which annealed temperature ranges above the $950^{\circ}C$. The junction depth, calculated at dose level of $1{\times}10^{18}/cm^3$, was measured by secondary ion mass spectroscopy(SIMS) and sheet resistance by contact and non-contact mode. Surface morphology of samples was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. As a result, we could accomplish the process conditions better than in advance.

  • Compared to conventional high resolution acoustic profiling, ultra high resolution shallow acoustic profiling using parametric echo sounder is limited in penetration, yet it provides resolution suitable for detailed seabed investigation in the shallow waters. The parametric sub-bottom profiler system provides not only the exact determination of water depth, but also the detailed information about sediment layers and sub-bottom structures. Possible applications include dredging project, search of buried pipeline, ship wrecks, and other artificial objects through the detailed mapping of thickness and structure of the upper sedimentary layers. In this study, contaminated sediments were discriminated by the correlation of ultra high resolution profiles with geologic data. In addition, the burial depth of the submarine cable was measured by the interpretation of acoustic anomalies in the profiles.

  • An extension of the modified leap-frog scheme is made to solve the nonlinear shallow-water equations. In the extended model. the physical dispersion of the Boussinesq equations is replaced by the numerical dispersion resulted from the leap-frog finite difference scheme. The model is used to simulate propagations of a solitary wave over a constant water depth and a linearly varying water depth. Obtained numerical results are compared with available analytical and other numerical solutions. A reasonable agreement is observed.

  • In the shallow trench isolation(STI)-chemical mechanical polishing(CMP) process, the key issues are the optimized thickness control, within-wafer-non-uniformity, and the possible defects such as pad oxide damage and nitride residue. The defect like nitride residue and silicon (or pad oxide) damage after STI-CMP process were discussed to accomplish its optimum process condition. To understand its optimum process condition, overall STI related processes including reverse moat etch, trench etch, STI fill and STI-CMP were discussed. Consequently, we could conclude that law trench depth and high CMP thickness can cause nitride residue, and high trench depth and over-polishing can cause silicon damage.

These defects after STI CMP process were discussed to accomplish its optimum process condition. To understand its optimum process condition, overall STI related processes including reverse moat etch, trench etch, STI filling and STI CMP were discussed. It is represented that the nitride residue can be occurred in the condition of high post CMP thickness and low trench depth. In addition there are remaining oxide on the moat surface after reverse moat etch. It means that reverse moat etching process can be the main source of nitride residue. Pad oxide damage can be caused by over-polishing and high trench depth.

  • Development of high efficiency turbine with good performance is one of the main topics in the field of developing wave energy converter. For the development and improvement of the turbine performance, the effect of wave condition on the turbine performance should be considered in detail. Also, water depth is an important factor because incident wave power to the turbine is considerably influenced by the wave particle amplitude of motion and the amplitude is closely related with the water depth. Therefore, in this study, the effect of water depth on the performance of a direct drive turbine(DDT) for wave energy converter is investigated using the DDT which is installed in two types of wave channel. The experimental results show that the DDT captures more wave energy under the condition of relatively shallow water depth. When the water depth is shallow, the horizontal water particle amplitude of motion becomes wider and thus, the water power toward the turbine becomes larger.
