  • A new concept for launching free-fall lifeboats, proposed by Yokohama National University is described in this paper. It has been pointed out that, using the conventional single-skid free-fall system, the potential for dangerous lifeboat motions (in which the lifeboat moves backward or jerks on the surface after entering the water) increases with the fall height of the lifeboat. One of the principal causes of this undesirable motion is vertical rotation of the lifeboat during its restricted fall at the edge of the launching skid. Thus a new "double-skid"launching concept is proposed to effectively eliminate the rotation of the lifeboat at the skid end and to enable the lifeboat to move smoothly after entering the water. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, a series of model experiments and numerical simulations is carried out in which two lifeboat models with overall lengths of 1 meter and 6 meters are used. The effects of design parameters such as skid angle and skid height are investigated, and an example of the implementation of this new system at the stern of a large merchant ship is illustrated.

  • CPP is widely utilized in RoPax ship, shuttle tanker etc. due to excellent manoeuvrability in low speed, and its usage is recently increased. The CPP was almost designed by CPP maker, and its performance seemed to be not fully optimized. In this study the whole CPP design procedure was reviewed and design technology of CPP was settled down including calculation of spindle torque and MOI, which was fully confirmed by KHI CPP maker. In order to confirm the CPP design technique, a CPP for shuttle tanker was designed and its performance was verified through series of model tests. The propeller efficiency and face cavitation performance of the CPP was well improved. This CPP design technology will be contributed to the optimization of performance and cooperation with CPP maker.

  • This paper deals with approximate integral solutions to the one-dimensional model describing the charging process of stratified thermal storage tanks. Temperature is assumed to be the form of Fermi-Dirac distribution function, which can be separated to two sets of cubic polynomials for each hot and cold side of thermal boundary layers. Proposed approximate integral solutions are compared to the previous works of the approximate analytic solutions and show reasonable agreement. The approach, however, has benefits in mathematical difficulties, complicated solution form and unstable convergence of series solution founded in the previous analytic solutions. Solutions for a semi-infinite region, which have simple closed form solutions, give close agreement to those for a finite region. Thermocline thickness is obtained in closed form and shows proportional behavior to the square root of time and inverse proportional behavior to the square root of flow rate.

  • An Evaluation System of Personal Information Competency was developed to evaluate individual Information competency and maturity levels in the enterprises of the information environment. The Evaluation System measures the requirements of information knowledge, skills, and mindset with the evaluation indices of personal information maturity. The indices are customized to four types of business departments - strategy Planning, development/maintenance, business applications, and administration support. Also, a maturity model of personal information competency is defined for interpretation of the evaluation results. The system was applied to assessment of actual human resources, 124 workers in an enterprise, to testify to its practical value. The case evaluation procedures include a series of questionnaires, written tests and application tests.

  • The objective of this paper is to present the results of an experimental and a finite-element investigation into the behavior of X80 grade pipes subjected to bending. For the pipe specimens comprising the test series, different D/t is applied to be representative of those that can be expected in the field. Results from the numerical models are checked against the observations in the testing program and the ability of numerical solutions to predict pipe moment capacity. curvatures. and buckling modes is established. A finite-element model was developed using the finite-element simulator to predict the local buckling behavior of pipes. The comparison between the numerical and the experimental results demonstrates the ability of the analytical model to predict the local buckling behavior of pipes when deformed well into the post-yield range.

  • 1. Introduction : In microfiltration the transport, deposition and removal of particles control cake formation on a filter. In this connection a new model on cake formation, based on the wall shear stress, was tested here in comparison with experiments of fine particle slurry under Taylor-vortex flow. The model expresses the deposition process for particles as two first-order steps in series of mass transfer and adhesion, and their removal process as a linear relation to the wall shear stress. This embraces characteristics of both dead-end and crossflow filtration. The correlation resulting from fitting to experimental data represented the experimental data reasonably well. This study will be helpful in analyzing fouling in heat exchangers.

  • This paper investigates properties of the newsvendor problem under a schedule involving progressive multiple discounts compared with the standard newsvendor problem under a no-discounts schedule. Unlike most conventional approaches using the criticial fractile to analyze the retailer and/or supplier behavior(s) in the newsvendor problem, our approach uses riskless profit. From the properties revealed through a series of computational experiments, two conjectures regarding the relationship between the expected profits of both newsvendor problems as a generalization over Khouja's argument (1995) are raised. Those conjectures encourage newsvendors who may face budget or warehouse capacity restriction to use the extended model under a multiple-discounts schedule rather than the standard model with no-discounts schedule because they apply for every order quantity as well as the optimal order quantity. In addition to the conjectures, some insightful results are found to justify the implementation of a multiple-discounts schedule from the computational experiments and a new interpretation for implementation of a multiple-discounts schedule that has not been addressed in Khouja is provided.

  • In 1963, Toomre built up classes of mass models for the highly flattened galaxies which have free parameters n, $a_n$ and $C_n$. In order to keep the universal dimension, we adopt parameters $b_n({C_n}^2={a_n}^{2n}+^2{b_n}^2/(n-1)!)$ insteal of $C_n$. Series of the normalized Toomre's mass models (G = $V_{max}$ =$R_{max}$ = 1, n = 1 to 7) are derived and the normalized parameters $a_n$ and $b_n$ are determined by the iteration method. Replacing parameters $a_n$ and $b_n$ to ${a_n}^l(=a_nr_{max})$ and ${b_n}^l(=b_n\cdotV_{max}/r_{max})$, we can get the generalization of Toomre's mass model.

  • This paper presents an efficient dynamic modeling method for open cracked rotor-bearing systems. An equivalent bending spring model is introduced to represent the structural weakening effect in the presence of cracks. The proposed modeling method is validated through a series of simulations and experiments. First, the proposed method is rigorously compared with a commercial finite element code. Then, an experiment is performed to validate the proposed modeling method. Finally, a numerical example is introduced to demonstrate the possible application of the proposed method in the crack diagnosis fur rotor systems.

  • An experimental investigation on the two-phase flow through tube orifices was performed with the refrigerant mixture of R32/125/134a(30/10/60). A series of tests were conducted to generate wide range of data at varying operation conditions with four short tubes. The tests include both single and two-phase flow conditions at the inlet of the short tube with different oil concentrations. Experimental data were presented as a function of major operating parameters and short tube diameter. Based on test results and data analysis, a semi-empirical flow model was developed to predict the mass flow rate through short tube orifices with a given set of conditions. The flow model was formed to cover both single and two-phase flow at the inlet of short tube with considering the effects of oil concentration.
