  • Site-specific N application for corn is one of the precision crop management. To implement the site-specific N application, various nitrogen stress sensing methods, including aerial image, tissue analysis, soil sampling analysis, and SPAD meter readings, have been used. Use of side-dressing, an efficient nitrogen application method than a uniform application in either late fall or early spring, relies mainly on the capability of nitrogen deficiency detection. This paper presents map-based variable rate nitrogen application based using a multi-spectral corn nitrogen deficiency(CND) sensor. This sensor assess the nitrogen stress by means of the estimated SPAD reading calculated from the corn leave reflectance. The estimated SPAD value from the CND sensor system and location information form DGPS of each field block was combined into the field map using a ArcView program. Then this map was converted into a raster file for a map-based variable rate application software. The relative SPAD (RSPAD = SPAD over reference SPAD) was investigated 2 weeks after the treatments. The results showed that the map-based variable rate application system was feasible.

  • It is well known that the family-mold has an advantage to reduce the cost for production and mold. However, defects are frequently occurred by over packing the smaller volume cavity during molding, especially when the family-mold has a volumetric difference between two cavities. In this study, the cavity-filling imbalance was confirmed by the temperature and the pressure sensors, and a variable-runner system was developed for balancing the cavity-filling. Experiments of balancing the cavity filling was carried out in the family-mold with the variable-runner system, and balancing the cavity-filling was confirmed by changing the cross-sectional area of a runner in the variable-runner system with the temperature and pressure sensors. The influence of the injection speed to the balancing-capability of the variable-runner system was also examined in the experiment.

  • This paper discusses study of sensorless control of a variable speed switched reluctance motor (SRM) for electric AC compressors on electrical vehicles. A typical SRM drive requires a position sensor such as an encoder or hall sensor to measure the angular rotor position. However, harsh environment in electrical AC compressors for electric vehicles makes it difficult to use the position sensor in their motor drive system. Therefore, a sensorless control scheme for electric compressor motors utilizing magnetic characteristics of SRM with respect to position angle and phase current is proposed. The overall variable speed SRM drive with position sensorless control scheme has been modeled using Matlab/Simulink software and closed loop current control simulation is presented to validate the proposed sensorless drive control.

  • A random forests classifier is applied to multi-sensor data fusion for supervised land-cover classification in order to account for the importance of variable. The random forests approach is a non-parametric ensemble classifier based on CART-like trees. The distinguished feature is that the importance of variable can be estimated by randomly permuting the variable of interest in all the out-of-bag samples for each classifier. Two different multi-sensor data sets for supervised classification were used to illustrate the applicability of random forests: one with optical and polarimetric SAR data and the other with multi-temporal Radarsat-l and ENVISAT ASAR data sets. From the experimental results, the random forests approach could extract important variables or bands for land-cover discrimination and showed reasonably good performance in terms of classification accuracy.

  • The subject of variable step size maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms has been addressed in the literature. However, most of the addressed algorithms tune the variable step size according to two variables: the photovoltaic (PV) array voltage ($V_{PV}$) and the PV array current ($I_{PV}$). Therefore, both the PV array current and voltage have to be measured. Recently, maximum power point trackers that arc based on a single variable ($I_{PV}$ or $V_{PV}$) have received a great deal of attention due to their simplicity and ease of implementation, when compared to other tracking techniques. In this paper, two methods have been proposed to design a variable step size MPPT algorithm using only a single current sensor for stand-alone battery storage PV systems. These methods utilize only the relationship between the PV array measured current and the converter duty cycle (D) to automatically adapt the step change in the duty cycle to reach the maximum power point (MPP) of the PV array. Detailed analyses and flowcharts of the proposed methods are included. Moreover, a comparison has been made between the proposed methods to investigate their performance in the transient and steady states. Finally, experimental results with field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are presented to verify the performance of the proposed methods.

  • The AMR(automatic meter reading) system has been increasingly and widely used for its efficient and intelligent management, which is a technology that automatically collects consumption data from a water meter or energy metering device. The digital meter instead of the mechanical meter should be used in the system. Up to now, various types of sensor to measure the water flow rate have been used in the digital water meter, for example, reed switch, photo IR approximate sensor, ultrasonic sensor, electromagnetic sensor, etc. In this paper, a new sensing technology, where a variable capacitor and digital circuit were used for sensing the water flow rate, was proposed. The circuit was designed and verified by Pspice simulation. And a PCB board for the circuit was fabricated. After then, a prototype of digital water meter using a variable capacitor to measure the water flow rate was fabricated. The function tests of the fabricated digital water meter were performed, and it was found that the meter worked properly. Since the new technology has much better properties in terms of cost and power consumption compared to conventional technologies, it should be one of the major digital water meter technologies in the future.

  • We propose a method using the genetic algorithm to solve the maximum set cover problem. It is needed for scheduling the power of sensor nodes in extending the lifetime of the wireless sensor network with variable sensing range. The existing Greedy Heuristic method calculates the power scheduling of sensor nodes repeatedly in the process of operation, and so the communication traffic of sensor nodes is increased. The proposed method reduces the amount of communication traffic of sensor nodes, and so the energies of nodes are saved, and the lifetime of network can be extended. The effectiveness of this method was verified through computer simulation, and considering the energy losses of communication operations about 10% in the network lifetime is improved.

  • Soft sensor is an effective method to deal with the estimation of variables, which are difficult to measure because of the reasons of economy or technology. Fuzzy logic system can be used to develop the soft sensor model by infinite rules, but the fuzzy dividing of variable sets is a key problem to achieve an accurate fuzzy logic model, In this paper, we proposed a new method to develop soft sensor model based on fuzzy neural network. First, using a novel method to divide the variable fuzzy sets by the process input and output data. Second, developing the fuzzy logic model based on that fuzzy set dividing. After that, expressing the fuzzy system with a fuzzy neural network and getting the initial soft sensor model based FNN. Last, adjusting the relative parameters of soft sensor model by the BP learning method. The effectiveness of the method proposed and the preferable generalization ability of soft sensor model built are demonstrated by the simulation.

  • The auto-illumination controller for office, residence, and so on was studied. The system consists of parts of a power supply, a signal oscillator, a lamp controller and two kinds of sensor. The lamp controller has two thyristors triggered by the IR sensor(SCRI) and CdS sensor(SCR2) respectively, When the illuminance around this system is higher than operating value of its sensor, lamp is turned off automatically. Otherwise, the light of lamp gets dim by CdS sensor. In case IR sensor senses the body heat of people around itself, the illuminance of the lamp gets maximum. The illuminance of the lamp can be changed dimmly by control of the variable resistor (RV) connected with SCR2 in series. The turning - on time of the lamp can be also controlled using a variable resistor(Rt) connected with a signal oscillator in parallel. Changing resistance Rt changes the time constant(.tau.), which triggers the gate of SCR2. Though people left the surrounding of lamp, the lamp keeps light for a while.
