  • This contribution to the IV Korea-Mexico meeting deals with the hydrodynamics of the matter reinserted within super star clusters (SSCs) by both stellar winds and supernova explosions, results recently printed in The Astrophysical Journal (Silich et al. 2007). The motivation of such a project arose from the persistent presence of the small mass and compact HII regions that sit right on top of many massive and compact SSCs, from which one expects a large mechanical energy power. The data used for our calculations appear only recently (see Smith et al. 2006) for the massive and compact SSC M82-A1. We presented in our paper the calculated flow, derived through analytical and semi-analytical methods, which led to almost identical results. We have found out that the only way of accommodating a compact HII region (4.5 pc in radius, in the case of M82-A1) on top of a 6.3 Myr old and massive (> $10^6M_{\bigodot}$) SSC with a half light radius of 3 pc, requires of two assumptions: a very low heating efficiency (< 10%) within the cluster, what leads to a bimodal solution (see Tenorio-Tagle et al. 2007) and a high pressure in the surrounding medium.

  • In this paper history of stresses, strains, radial and circumferential displacements of a functionally graded thick-walled hollow cylinder due to creep phenomenon is investigated. The cylinder is subjected to an arbitrary non-axisymmetric two dimensional thermo-mechanical loading and uniform magnetic field along axial direction. Using equilibrium, strain-displacements and stress-strain relations, the governing differential equations of the problem containing creep strains are derived in terms of radial and circumferential displacements. Since the displacements are varying with time due to creep phenomenon, an analytical solution is not available for these equations. Thus, a semi-analytical procedure based on separation of variables and Fourier series together with a numerical procedure is employed. The numerical results indicate that the non-axisymmetric loading and the material grading index have significant effect on stress redistributions. Moreover, by proper selection of material for any combination of non-axisymmetric loading, one can arrive suitable response for the cylinder to achieve optimal design. With some simplifications, the results are validated with the existing literature.

  • In the group of commonly prescribed β-blocker drugs, one of the enantiomers is generally relatively more active than the others. This study aims to develop a technique for the chiral analysis of select β-blockers based on proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectrometry. (S)-2-Tert-butyl-2-methyl-1,3-benzodioxole-4-carboxylic acid ((S)-TBMB) was synthesized and utilized as a chiral derivatizing agent. Pure β-blocker enantiomers were isolated from racemates by semi-preparative liquid chromatography prior to derivatization. The reaction time and concentration of (S)-TBMB were controlled to improve the derivatization procedure. No racemization was found during the analysis. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis was also performed for comparative purposes. High agreement between the NMR and HPLC methods was achieved in the determination of (R)-metoprolol in a standard solution of the (S) isomer.

  • In this study, we extrapolate a nonlinear force-free field (NLFFF) from an observed photospheric magnetic field to understand the three-dimensional (3D) coronal magnetic field producing a huge solar flare. The purpose of this study is to develop a NLFFF extrapolation code based on the so-called MHD relaxation method and check how accurately our model reconstructs a coronal field. Furthermore, we apply it to the photospheric magnetic field obtained by Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on board Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) to reconstruct a 3D magnetic structure. We first investigate factors in controlling the accuracy of our NLFFF code by using a semi-analytical solution obtained by Low & Lou (1990). To extend a work done by Inoue et al. (2014), we apply various boundary conditions at the side and top boundaries in order to make our solution close to a realistic solution. As a consequence, our solution has a good accuracy when three components of a reference field are all fixed at the boundaries. Furthermore, it is also found that our solution is well matched to the Low & Lou solution in the central area of a simulation domain when the three components of a potential field are fixed at side and top boundaries (this approach is close to a realistic solution). Finally, we present the 3D coronal magnetic field producing an X 1.5-class flare in the active region 11166 through the extrapolation from SDO/HMI.

  • In this study, a new procedure for solving 2-D dynamic problems of semi-infinite medium in time domain by boundary element method (BEM) is presented. Efficient modelling of the far field region, infinite boundary elements are introduced. The shape function of the infinite boundary element is a combination of decay functions and Laguerre functions. Though the present shape functions have been developed for the time domain analysis, they may be also applicable to the frequency domain analysis. Through the response analysis in a 2-D half space under a uniformly distributed dynamic load, it has been found that an excellent accuracy can be achieved compared with the analytical solution

  • In this work, a mixed beam approach that combines both the stiffness and the flexibility methods has been performed to analyze the coupled composite blades with closed, two-cell cross-sections. The Reissner's semi-complementary energy functional is used to derive the beam force-displacement relations. Only the membrane part of the shell wall is taken into account to make the analysis simple and also to deliver a clear picture of the mixed method. All the cross section stiffness coefficients as well as the distribution of shear across the section are evaluated in a closed-form through the beam formulation. The theory is validated against experimental test data, detailed finite element analysis results, and other analytical results for coupled composite blades with a two-cell airfoil section. Despite the simple kinematic model adopted in the theory, an accuracy comparable to that of two-dimensional finite element analysis has been obtained for cases considered in this study.

  • A dynamic interaction analysis of an adjacent surface fecundation on a layered half-space is performed in the frequency domain. A semi-analytical approach is employed to reduce the integration range of the wavenumber in the surface fundamental solution for a layered half-space in boundary element (BE) formulations. The present study then adopts a combined boundary and finite element method to analyze the dynamic behavior of a system of flexible surface foundations on an elastic homogeneous and layered half-space. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the accuracy of the developed method. The examples show the feasibility of an extended application fur the complicated dynamic interaction of foundations on layered media.

  • In this study, based on the three-dimensional theory of elasticity, free vibration characteristics of sandwich sectorial plates with multiwalled carbon nanotube-(MWCNT)-reinforced composite core are considered. Modified Halpin-Tsai equation is used to evaluate the Young's modulus of the MWCNT/epoxy composite samples by the incorporation of an orientation as well as an exponential shape factor in the equation. The exponential shape factor modifies the Halpin-Tsai equation from expressing a straight line to a nonlinear one in the MWCNTs wt% range considered. In this paper, free vibration of thick functionally graded sandwich annular sectorial plates with simply supported radial edges and different circular edge conditions including simply supported-clamped, clamped-clamped, and free-clamped is investigated. A semi-analytical approach composed of two-dimensional differential quadrature method and series solution are adopted to solve the equations of motion. The material properties change continuously through the core thickness of the plate, which can vary according to a power-law, exponentially, or any other formulations in this direction. This study serves as a benchmark for assessing the validity of numerical methods or two-dimensional theories used to analysis of laminated sectorial plates.

  • In this study, the stresses and electric potential redistributions of a cylinder made from functionally graded piezoelectric material (FGPM) are investigated. All the mechanical, thermal and piezoelectric properties are modeled as power-law distribution of volume fraction. Using the coupled electro-thermo-mechanical relations, strain-displacement relations, Maxwell and equilibrium equations are obtained including the time dependent creep strains. Creep strains are time, temperature and stress dependent, the closed form solution cannot be found for this constitutive differential equation. A semi-analytical method in conjunction with the Mendelson method of successive approximation is therefore proposed for this analysis. Similar to the radial stress histories, electric potentials increase with time, because the latter is induced by the former during creep deformation of the cylinder, justifying industrial application of such a material as efficient actuators and sensors.

  • This Paper Presents an effective and simple procedure for the simulation of the motion of the solid-liquid interfacial boundary and the transient temperature field during phase change process. To accomplish this purpose, an iterative implicit solution algorithm has been developed by employing the dual reciprocity boundary element method. The dual reciprocity boundary element approach provided in this paper is much simpler than the usual boundary element method applying a reciprocity principle and an available technique for dealing with domain integral of boundary element formulation simultaneously. The effectiveness of the present analysis method have been illustrated through comparisons of the calculation results of an example with its semi-analytical or other numerical solutions where available.
