  • This paper proposes a novel semantic feature detection (SFD) method for real-time image transmission of sign language and finger spelling. We extract semantic information as an interlingua from input text by natural language processing, and then transmit the semantic feature detection, which actually is a parameterized action representation, to the 3-D articulated humanoid models prepared in each client in remote locations. Once the SFD is received, the virtual human will be animated by the synthesized SFD. The experimental results based on Japanese sign langauge and Chinese sign langauge demonstrate that this algorithm is effective in real-time image delivery of sign language and finger spelling.

  • Recently, Linked Open Data has become a large set of knowledge bases. Therefore, the need to query Linked Data using question answering (QA) techniques has attracted the attention of many researchers. A QA system translates natural language questions into structured queries, such as SPARQL queries, to be executed over Linked Data. The two main challenges in such systems are lexical and semantic gaps. A lexical gap refers to the difference between the vocabularies used in an input question and those used in the knowledge base. A semantic gap refers to the difference between expressed information needs and the representation of the knowledge base. In this paper, we present a novel method using an ontology lexicon and dependency parse trees to overcome lexical and semantic gaps. The proposed technique is evaluated on the QALD-5 benchmark and exhibits promising results.

  • As the networks connect the world, enterprises tend to move manufacturing activities into virtual spaces. Since different software applications use different data terminology, it becomes a problem to interoperate, interchange, and manage electronic data among heterogeneous systems. It is said that approximately one billion dollar has been being spent yearly in USA for product data exchange and interoperability. As commercial CAD systems have brought in the concept of design feature for the sake of interoperability, terminologies of design features need to be harmonized. In order to define design feature terminology for integration, knowledge about feature definitions of different CAD systems should be considered. STEP standard have attempted to solve this problem, but it defines only syntactic data representation so that semantic data integration is not possible. This paper proposes a methodology for integrating modeling features of CAD systems. We utilize the ontology concept to build a data model of design features which can be a semantic standard of feature definitions of CAD systems. Using feature ontology, we implement an integrated virtual database and a simple system which searches and edits design features in a semantic way.

  • As the modern techniques have improved, people intend to store and manage the information on the web. Especially, it is the image data that is given a great deal of weight of the information because of the development of the scan and popularization of the digital camera and the cell-phone's camera. However, most image retrieval systems are still based on the text annotations while many images are creating everyday on the web. In this paper, we suggest the new approach for the semantic image retrieval using the RDF metadata based on the representation of the spatial relationships. For the semantic image retrieval, firstly we define the new vocabularies to represent the spatial relationships between the objects in the image. Secondly, we write the metadata about the image using RDF and new vocabularies. Finally. we could expect more correct result in our image retrieval system.

  • This paper has revisited the dative alternation in English, and defended the so-called polysemy view. The paper has argued for a particular format of lexical representation, one that allows reference to events. In addition to the semantic conditions, the paper has argued that the DO and PO constructions also allow for different information structures.

  • The aim of this study is to construct a formal semantic representation of the korean adverbial phrase(AdvP) composed of NP of t imp and of the adverbial particle OE. This AdvP establishes various relations between the time indicated by NP and the time of the event described by the sentence, depending on the type of th first and the aspectual property of the second. To represent formally the semantic functions of this AdvP, we used lambda-calculus and unification grammar in the way proposed by Renaud(1996).

  • The present study was conducted to investigate the difference of cortical activation in naming the picture in Korean and English. Experimental design was 2(Korean, English) language condition x 4(no distractor, semantic related distractor, semantic unrelated distrator, corresponding distractor) distractor condition. language condition was between subject factor and distractor condition was within subject factor. The result was that Korean naming condition showed less cortical activation than English naming condition. The activation region was reported in each condition.

  • This paper explores Discourse Rep-resentation Structures which can successfully describe the mental representations that discourse participants form when they hear so-called double access sentences. The syntactic, semantic and pragmatic characteristics of double access sentences are discussed. The analysis proposed in this paper, employing a modified version of the 'conditional beliefs' of Chung(1997), successfully explains the semantic and pragmatic characteristics of present or future tense in double access sentences as well as when and why the speaker should take or can be exempted from the responsibility for using present or future tense in double access sentences.

  • To provide an appropriate knowledge representation technique dependent on a particular domain, we consider the combine analytic hierachy process(CAHP). This is an extended method of the conventional AHP which is useful when two different expert groups are involved. Our problem domain is confined to human resource management including such major activities as planning, selection, placement, compensations, performance evaluation, training, and labor-management relations. We prioritize rules, frames, semantic nets, and predicate logic representation techniques best suited to each and all domains through an exploratory study.
