  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the need of college students for experiential learning, collaborative learning, and enquiry-based learning. To achieve this goal, a survey was conducted with 308 college students. The need for experience, collaboration, and enquiry-based learning was comprehensively analyzed through t-tests, Borich needs analysis, and priority determination using The Locus for Focus model. The research findings are as follows: First, in Borich need analysis, the highest needs were identified for deep learning, self-directed learning, connecting theoretical knowledge with practical application, immersion, and application to real-life situations. Second, in The Locus for Focus model, the highest needs were found for abstract conceptualization, interest, conflict management, self-directed learning, and curiosity. In summary, since self-directed learning showed the highest priority simultaneously in Borich need analysis and The Locus for Focus model, it should be considered as the most prioritized item.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze communication, problem solving and self-directed learning of elementary and secondary scientific gifted students. In addition, this study investigated correlation on the subdomains of communication, problem solving and self-directed learning. The subjects of this study were 252 students(97 elementary students and 155 secondary students) who had been enrolled at Center for Science Gifted and Talented Education. Elementary and secondary scientific gifted students' self-directed learning skill was the highest score among core abilities. The result of analysis on self-directed learning subdomain presented the highest score in basic self control of elementary students. The secondary scientific gifted students showed the highest score in effort attribution to result. Subdomains of core capacity has very high correlation. This fact shows very high correlation among core abilities. The results of this study are suggesting that the systematical life skills education based on concrete factors is effective to improve communication, problem solving and self-directed learning of scientific gifted students.

  • This study has designed to find out the effects of a project-based flipped learning model at universities on the self-directed learning ability, the self-leadership, and the learning competency. For the study, two procedures were performed. First, a flipped learning model for a project-based learning was developed on the basis of the literature reviews. The flipped learning model has three different steps: the pre-class, the in-class, and the post-class. In the pre-class, instructors provide mini-core courses using various technologies for learners outside the class. The in-class is the step to check whether learners prepare their learning or not. Also, in this step, the in-death learning and the teaching-learning process by interaction between instructors and learners would be performed. In the post-class, learners would be able to sustain the extended learning to develop the learning tasks and activities after flipped learning class. Through this step, the learners could be experienced integrated thinking and application, documentation and management, as well as sharing and spread of their learning. Second, the effectiveness of the developed flipped learning model on the self-direction, the self-leadership, and the learning competency was examined. The quantitative research method and the qualitative research method were used for this study. The results indicated that the flipped learning model showed improvement on the self-direction, the self-leadership, and the learning competency.

  • In the advanced information age, learning is an activity in which learners access information resources through computers and Internet to acquire and evaluate information on their own. The emergence of an online learning platform based on the fourth industrial revolution technology is developing into an environment in which elementary and secondary learners learn and study based on constructivism learning theory. In the online learning environment, the researches on the information retrieval ability of the elementary and secondary learners and the self-directed learning ability were found to be highly related. However, it is necessary to analyze the relation between information retrieval ability and self-directed learning ability through a cross-sectional study that is limited to specific curriculum and contents and expands the longitudinal research. In this study, the panel data of the Seoul Education Longitudinal Study collected over 8 years are used to find the difference in self-directed learning ability according to the longitudinal pattern of information retrieval ability and frequency.

  • Metacognition is a core element for nurses' clinical competency as a result of the learner's development and evaluate goals and plans for problem solving. The study aimed to analyze factors related to metacognition among undergraduate nursing students. The 205 nursing students participated from August 15 to October 19, 2017 to measure metacognition, self-directed learning, grit, learning environment and learning style. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression with the SPSS/Win 22.0 program. Metacognition represented a positive correlation with self-directed learning, grit, learning environment. The self-directed learning and grit were significant factors on undergraduate nursing students' metacognition. As a result of this study, it is necessary to develop curriculum that can improve metacognition level by increasing self-directed learning ability and grit of undergraduate nursing student.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the self-directed learning experiences of nursing student in an online learning. Data collection was conducted through three focus group interviews from July to August 2021, and the subjects of the study were 15 nursing students who experienced online learning. For analysis, all interviews were recorded and transcribed as the participants said, and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. As a result of the study, 4 categories and 11 subcategories were derived. The four categories which nursing students experienced on online self-directed learning were 'cognitive action of learning motivation', 'preparing my own learning strategy through reflection', 'creating an environment that supports learning', and 'effective online instructional design and enthusiasm of instructors.' The results of this study can be used as basic data for preparing self-directed learning strategies of nursing students in online learning.

  • Recently, a learning management system incorporating ICT technology into learning has helped students improve self-directed learning skills. Self-directed learning using LMS promotes and stimulates learners' participation in learning, focusing on the advantages of efficient use of learning resources and the spread of communication. In this study, we study the impact of self-directed learning using the learning management system on elementary school students' motivation and academic performance. We expect learners will be able to achieve effective academic achievement by learning problems that fit their level through the algorithms of the proposed learning management system. For this study, a total of 16 classes were conducted for eight weeks using the proposed learning management system for 21 elementary school students. Research has shown significant improvement in the learning orientation and interest areas of the learners who participated in the experiment.

  • This study is a descriptive research study to verify the relationship between university students' learning flow, self-directed learning, learning outcomes, and online class satisfaction, and to identify factors that influence online class satisfaction. There was a significant positive correlation between university students' learning flow, self-directed learning, learning outcomes, and online class satisfaction. Online class satisfaction had a positive effect on learning flow and learning outcomes, but self-directed learning had no direct effect. The explanatory power of online class satisfaction was 49%. Based on the above results, in order to increase online class satisfaction, a plan is needed to improve university students' learning flow and learning outcomes for online classes. In addition, instructor and university are required to actively endeavor and support to improve the quality of online classes.

  • This study aims to investigate whether differences in self-directed learning ability according to the personality types of learners occur in after-school programs and the difference in self-directed learning ability according to extroversion and introversion personality types was analyzed for 12 elementary school students in Jeollanam-do who voluntarily participate in after-school programs. As a result of this test, there was no difference in self-directed learning ability in accordance extraversion and introversion. It is judged that when elementary school students are freed from the sense of duty of passive learning participation, introverted students can also pioneer and develop learning methods suitable for them. Based on this, the limitations and implications of the study and next research direction was presented.
