This paper presents new matting techniques. The matting is an alpha estimation technique of object in an image. We can extract the object in an image naturally using the matting technique. The proposed algorithms begin by segmenting an image into three regions: definitely foreground, definitely background, and unknown. Then we estimate foreground, background, and alpha for all pixels in the unknown region. The proposed algorithms learn the definitely foreground and definitely background using self-organizing map(SOM), and estimate an alpha value of each pixel in the unknown region using SOM learning result. SOM matting is distinguished between global SOM matting and local SOM matting by learning method. Experiment results show the proposed algorithms can extract the object in an image.
Customer retention is a common concern for many industries and a critical issue for the survival in today's greatly compressed marketplace. Current customer retention models only focus on detection of potential defectors based on the likelihood of defection by using demographic and customer profile information. In this paper, we propose a dynamic procedure for defection detection and prevention using past and current customer behavior by utilizing SOM and Markov chain. The basic idea originates from the observation that a customer has a tendency to change his behavior (i.e. trim-out his usage volumes) before his eventual withdrawal. This gradual pulling out process offers the company the opportunity to detect the defection signals. With this approach, we have two significant benefits compared with existing defection detection studies. First, our procedure can predict when the potential defectors could withdraw and this feature helps to give marketing managers ample lead-time for preparing defection prevention plans. The second benefit is that our approach can provide a procedure for not only defection detection but also defection prevention, which could suggest the desirable behavior state for the next period so as to lower the likelihood of defection. We applied our dynamic procedure for defection detection and prevention to the online gaming industry. Our suggested procedure could predict potential defectors without deterioration of prediction accuracy compared to that of the MLP neural network and DT.

This paper presents a new postprocessing method to eliminate the false minutiae, that caused by the skelectonization of fingerprint image, and an image compression method using Isometric Self Organizing Map(ISOSOM). Since the SOM has simple structure, fast encoding time, and relatively good classification characteristics, many image processing areas adopt this such as image compression and pattern classification, etc. But, the SOM shows limited performances in pattern classification because of it's single layer structure. To maximize the performance of the pattern classification with small code book, we a lied the Isometric SOM with the isometry of the fractal theory. The proposed Isometric SOM postprocessing and compression algorithm of fingerprint image showed good performances in the elimination of false minutiae and the image compression simultaneously.
There are only a handful number of research conducted on pattern analysis of corporate distress as compared with research for bankruptcy prediction. The few that exists mainly focus on audited firms because financial data collection is easier for these firms. But in reality, corporate financial distress is a far more common and critical phenomenon for non-audited firms which are mainly comprised of small and medium sized firms. The purpose of this paper is to classify non-audited firms under distress according to their financial ratio using data mining; Self-Organizing Map (SOM). SOM is a type of artificial neural network that is trained using unsupervised learning to produce a lower dimensional discretized representation of the input space of the training samples, called a map. SOM is different from other artificial neural networks as it applies competitive learning as opposed to error-correction learning such as backpropagation with gradient descent, and in the sense that it uses a neighborhood function to preserve the topological properties of the input space. It is one of the popular and successful clustering algorithm. In this study, we classify types of financial distress firms, specially, non-audited firms. In the empirical test, we collect 10 financial ratios of 100 non-audited firms under distress in 2004 for the previous two years (2002 and 2003). Using these financial ratios and the SOM algorithm, five distinct patterns were distinguished. In pattern 1, financial distress was very serious in almost all financial ratios. 12% of the firms are included in these patterns. In pattern 2, financial distress was weak in almost financial ratios. 14% of the firms are included in pattern 2. In pattern 3, growth ratio was the worst among all patterns. It is speculated that the firms of this pattern may be under distress due to severe competition in their industries. Approximately 30% of the firms fell into this group. In pattern 4, the growth ratio was higher than any other pattern but the cash ratio and profitability ratio were not at the level of the growth ratio. It is concluded that the firms of this pattern were under distress in pursuit of expanding their business. About 25% of the firms were in this pattern. Last, pattern 5 encompassed very solvent firms. Perhaps firms of this pattern were distressed due to a bad short-term strategic decision or due to problems with the enterpriser of the firms. Approximately 18% of the firms were under this pattern. This study has the academic and empirical contribution. In the perspectives of the academic contribution, non-audited companies that tend to be easily bankrupt and have the unstructured or easily manipulated financial data are classified by the data mining technology (Self-Organizing Map) rather than big sized audited firms that have the well prepared and reliable financial data. In the perspectives of the empirical one, even though the financial data of the non-audited firms are conducted to analyze, it is useful for find out the first order symptom of financial distress, which makes us to forecast the prediction of bankruptcy of the firms and to manage the early warning and alert signal. These are the academic and empirical contribution of this study. The limitation of this research is to analyze only 100 corporates due to the difficulty of collecting the financial data of the non-audited firms, which make us to be hard to proceed to the analysis by the category or size difference. Also, non-financial qualitative data is crucial for the analysis of bankruptcy. Thus, the non-financial qualitative factor is taken into account for the next study. This study sheds some light on the non-audited small and medium sized firms' distress prediction in the future.

Properly defining signal and noise in a self-organizing system like ART(Adaptive Resonance Theory) neural network model raises a number of subtle issues. Pattern context must enter the definition so that input features, treated as irrelevant noise when they are embedded in a given input pattern, may be treated as informative signals when they are embedded in a different input pattern. The ATR automatically self-scales their computational units to embody context and learning dependent definitions of a signal and noise and there is no problem in categorizing input pattern that have features similar in nature. However, when we have imput patterns that have features that are different in size and nature, the use of only one vigilance parameter is not enough to differentiate a signal from noise for a good categorization. For example, if the value fo vigilance parameter is large, then noise may be processed as an informative signal and unnecessary categories are generated: and if the value of vigilance parameter is small, an informative signal may be ignored and treated as noise. Hence it is no easy to achieve a good pattern categorization. To overcome such problems, a Coupled-ART neural network capable of modularized categorization of patterns is proposed. The Coupled-ART has two layer of tightly coupled modules. the upper and the lower. The lower layer processes the global features of a pattern and the structural features, separately in parallel. The upper layer combines the categorized outputs from the lower layer and categorizes the combined output, Hence, due to the modularized categorization of patterns, the Coupled-ART classifies patterns more efficiently than the ART1 model.
The purpose of the study was to suggest automatic recognition of the subject's level of arousal into high arousal and low arousal with neural network SOM learning. The automatic recognition in the level of arousal is composed of three stages. First, it is a stage of ECG measurement and analysis. It measures the subject playing a shooting game with ECG and extracts characteristics for SOM learning. Second, it is a stage of SOM learning. It learns input vectors extracting characteristics. Finally, it is a stage of arousal recognition which recognize the subject's level of arousal when new vectors are input after SOM learning is completed. The study expresses recognition results in the level of arousal and the level of arousal in numerical value and graph when SOM learning results in the level of arousal and new vectors are input. Finally, SOM evaluation was analyzed average 86% by comparing emotion evaluation results of the existing research with automatic recognition results of SOM in order. The study could experience automatic recognition with other levels of arousal by each subject with SOM.
The land cover over Korean peninsula was classified using a multi-temporal NOAA/AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) data. Four types of phenological data derived from the 10-day composited NDVI (Normalized Differences Vegetation Index), maximum and annual mean land surface temperature, and topographical data were used not only reducing the data volume but also increasing the accuracy of classification. Self organizing feature map (SOFM), a kind of neural network technique, was used for the clustering of satellite data. We used a decision tree for the classification of the clusters. When we compared the classification results with the time series of NDVI and some other available ground truth data, the urban, agricultural area, deciduous tree and evergreen tree were clearly classified.

It is difficult to reuse the captured motion data, because the data has a difficulty in editing it. In this paper, a uniform posture mar (UPM) algorithm, one of unsupervised learning neural network is proposed to edit the captured motion data. Because it needs much less computational cost than other motion editing algorithms, it is adequate to apply in teal-time applications. The UPM algorithm prevents from generating an unreal posture in learning phase. It not only makes more realistic motion curves, but also contributes to making more natural motions. Above of all, it complements the weakness of the existing algorithm where the calculation quantity increases in proportion to increase the number of restricted condition to solve the problems of high order articulated body. In this paper, it is shown two applications as a visible the application instance of UPM algorithm. One is a motion transition editing system, the other is a inductive inverse kinematics system. This method could be applied to produce 3D character animation based on key frame method, 3D game, and virtual reality, etc.
Recently, due to molecular biology and engineering technology, DNA microarray makes people watch thousands of genes and the state of variation from the tissue samples of living body. With DNA Microarray, it is possible to construct a genetic group that has similar expression patterns and grasp the progress and variation of gene. This paper practices Cluster Analysis which purposes the discovery of biological subgroup or class by using gene expression information. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to predict a new class which is unknown, open leukaemia data are used for the experiment, and MCL (Markov CLustering) algorithm is applied as an analysis method. The MCL algorithm is based on probability and graph flow theory. MCL simulates random walks on a graph using Markov matrices to determine the transition probabilities among nodes of the graph. If you look at closely to the method, first, MCL algorithm should be applied after getting the distance by using Euclidean distance, then inflation and diagonal factors which are tuning modulus should be tuned, and finally the threshold using the average of each column should be gotten to distinguish one class from another class. Our method has improved the accuracy through using the threshold, namely the average of each column. Our experimental result shows about 70% of accuracy in average compared to the class that is known before. Also, for the comparison evaluation to other algorithm, the proposed method compared to and analyzed SOM (Self-Organizing Map) clustering algorithm which is divided into neural network and hierarchical clustering. The method shows the better result when compared to hierarchical clustering. In further study, it should be studied whether there will be a similar result when the parameter of inflation gotten from our experiment is applied to other gene expression data. We are also trying to make a systematic method to improve the accuracy by regulating the factors mentioned above.
