We have studied the feasibility of geostatistics approach to enhancing analysis of sparsely obtained seismic data by combining with satellite gravity data. The shallow depth and numerous fishing nets in The Yellow Sea, west of Korea, makes it difficult to do seismic surveys in this area. Therefore, we have attempted to use geostatistics to integrate the seismic data along with gravity data. To evaluate the feasibility of this approach, we have extracted only a few seismic profile data from previous surveys in the Yellow Sea and performed integrated analysis combining with the results from gravity data under the assumption that seismic velocity and density have a high physical correlation. First, we analyzed the correlation between extracted seismic profiles and depths obtained from gravity inversion. Next, we transferred the gravity depth to travel time using non-linear indicator transform and analyze residual values by kriging with varying local means. Finally, the reconstructed time structure map was compared with the original seismic section given in the previous study. Our geostatistical approach demonstrates relatively satisfactory results and especially, in the boundary area where seismic lines are sparse, gives us more in-depth information than previously available.
Transmission towers have come to represent one of the most important infrastructures in today's society, which may suffer severe earthquakes during their service lives. However, in the conventional seismic analyses of transmission towers, the towers are normally assumed to be fixed on the ground without considering the effect of soil-structure interaction (SSI) on the pile-supported transmission tower. This assumption may lead to inaccurate seismic performance estimations of transmission towers. In the present study, the seismic response and failure analyses of pile-supported transmission towers considering SSI are comprehensively performed based on the finite element method. Specifically, two detailed finite element (FE) models of the employed pile-supported transmission tower with and without consideration of SSI effects are established in ABAQUS analysis platform, in which SSI is simulated by the classical p-y approach. A simulation method is developed to stochastically synthesize the earthquake ground motions at different soil depths (i.e. depth-varying ground motions, DVGMs). The impacts of SSI on the dynamic characteristic, seismic response and failure modes are investigated and discussed by using the generated FE models and ground motions. Numerical results show that the vibration mode shapes of the pile-supported transmission towers with and without SSI are basically same; however, SSI can significantly affect the dynamic characteristic by altering the vibration frequencies of different modes. Neglecting the SSI and the variability of earthquake motions at different depths may cause an underestimate and overestimate on the seismic responses, respectively. Moreover, the seismic failure mode of pile-supported transmission towers is also significantly impacted by the SSI and DVGMs.
A seismic refraction study in estimation of depth to the bedrock demonstrates that 1) the average velocity in the medium is about 250 m/s in the surface layer (< 4 m), 2,500 m/s in the weathered formation, and greater than 3,000 m/s in the bedrock, 2) the depth to the deepest reflector assumed to be the bedrock is about 17 m; however, according to the cores collected in a borehole in study area, the bedrock (granite) occurred at depth 25 m, 3) according to the density and velocity logging, at depth 17 m, a measurable velocity and density increase are observed, and 4) the velocity of the weathered formation is relatively high and therefore, the acquisition offsets ($70{\sim}80m$) are turned out not to be long enough to record the refracted signal from the bedrock at depth 25 m as first arrivals.
In order to study gas hydrate, potential future energy resources, Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources has conducted seismic reflection survey in the East Sea since 1997. one of evidence for presence of gas hydrate in seismic reflection data is a bottom simulating reflector (BSR). The BSR occurs at the interface between overlaying higher velocity, hydrate-bearing sediment and underlying lower velocity, free gas-bearing sediment. That is often characterized by large reflection coefficient and reflection polarity reverse to that of seafloor reflection. In order to apply depth migration to seismic reflection data. we need high performance computers and a parallelizing technique because of huge data volume and computation. Phase shift plus interpolation (PSPI) is a useful method for migration due to less computing time and computational efficiency. PSPI is intrinsically parallelizing characteristic in the frequency domain. We conducted conventional data processing for the gas hydrate data of the Ease Sea and then applied prestack depth migration using message-passing-interface PSPI (MPI_PSPI) that was parallelized by MPI local-area-multi-computer (MPI_LAM). Velocity model was made using the stack velocities after we had picked horizons on the stack image with in-house processing tool, Geobit. We could find the BSRs on the migrated stack section were about at SP 3555-4162 and two way travel time around 2,950 ms in time domain. In depth domain such BSRs appear at 6-17 km distance and 2.1 km depth from the seafloor. Since energy concentrated subsurface was well imaged we have to choose acquisition parameters suited for transmitting seismic energy to target area.

This study is a secondary study that is a cyclic seismic test of High depth hybrid composite beam and column connection after the primary bending strength test of a high depth Hybrid composite beam. Total of 3 seismic test specimens were prepared to cyclic test. The bracket and beam web spliced by high strength bolt and the bracket and beam upper flange was spliced by welding. Test results showed that the seismic strength was higher than the plastic moment($M_p$) in the positive negative moment section, the requirement of composite intermediate moment frame wes satisfied. Therefore, the requirement of intermediate moment frame can be secured by applying the details of connection of this study results.

The seismic source parameters of the Uljin earthquake on 29 May 2004, including focal depth, focal mechanism, magnitude, and moment tensor elements for source characteristics, are analysed using moment tensor seismic source inversion. The Green‘s function for 3 crust models representing the southern Korean Peninsula are used. Also 3 kinds of epicenters are used to find optimum solution for seismic source parameters. Results show that seismic source parameters have a little dependency of azimuthal distribution and epicentral distances of seismic stations. Final results show that the event, considering 6 moment tensor elements, is caused by the typical reverse fault with nearly NS strike. The focal mechanism implies that the tectonic force around epicenter area currently has compressive environment, with nearly EW principal axis. The focal depth is estimated to be about 12km. The resultant focal mechanism show fairly good agreement to those of other studies. However, focal depth is much different from that of other studies.
A seismic hazard map based on spatial analysis of various sources of geologic seismic information was developed and assessed for regional seismic vulnerability in South Korea. The indicators for assessment were selected in consideration of the geological characteristics affecting the seismic damage. Probabilistic seismic hazard and fault information were used to be associated with the seismic activity hazard and bedrock depth related with the seismic damage hazard was also included. Each indicator was constructed of spatial information using GIS and geostatistical techniques such as ordinary kriging, line density mapping and simple kriging with local varying means. Three spatial information constructed were integrated by assigning weights according to the research purpose, data resolution and accuracy. In the case of probabilistic seismic hazard and fault line density, since the data uncertainty was relatively high, only the trend was intended to be reflected firstly. Finally, the seismic activity hazard was calculated and then integrated with the bedrock depth distribution as seismic damage hazard indicator. As a result, a seismic hazard map was proposed based on the analysis of three spatial data and the southeast and northwest regions of South Korea were assessed as having high seismic hazard. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic data for constructing seismic risk management systems to minimize earthquake disasters.
Waveform inversion requires extracting a reliable low frequency content of seismic data for estimating of the low wave number velocity model. The low frequency content of the seismic data is usually discarded or neglected because of the band-limited response of the source and the receivers. In this study, however small the spectral of the low frequency seismic data is, we assume that it is possible to extract a reliable phase information of the low frequency from the seismic data and use it in waveform inversion. To this end, we exploit the frequency domain finite element modeling and source-receiver reciprocity to calculate the $Frech\`{e}t$ derivative of the phase of the seismic data with respect to the earth model parameter such as velocity, and then apply a damped least squares method to invert the phase of the seismic data. Through numerical example, we will attempt to demonstrate the feasibility of our method in estimating the correct velocity model for prestack depth migration.

As structure-soil interaction analysis for the seismic analysis of structures requires a nonlinear analysis of a structure-soil system considering the inelastic characteristics of soil layers nonlinear analyses of the foundation-soil system with the horizontal excitation were performed considering the nonlinear soil conditions for the nonlinear seismic analysis of structures. Stiff soil profile of SD and soft soil profile of SE specified in UBC were considered for the soil layers of a foundation and Ramberg-Osgood model was assumed for the nonlinear characteristics of soil layers. Studies on the changes of dynamci stiffnesses and damping rations of surface and embedded foundations depending on foundation size soil layer depth and piles were performed to investigate the effects of the nonlinear soil layer on the horizontal and rotational dynamic stiffnesses and damping ratios of the foundation-soil system According to the study results nonlinear prperties of a soil laryer decreeased horizontal and rotational linear stiffnesses and increased damping ratios largely Effects of foundation size soil layer depth and piles were also significant suggesting the necessity of nonlinear seismic analyses of structures.

One of the major difficulties in the seismic analysis of a dam-reservoir system is the treatment of the energy radiation in the upstream direction of the reservoir. In this paper a new transmitting boundary is presented that can model properly the radiation of energy in the far field direction of a semi-infinite reservoir with constant depth. In the newly developed method, effects of surface wave motion are taken into account and the reservoir-foundation interaction is approximately accounted for with an absorbing boundary condition. If a dam has vertical upstream face and the infinitely long reservoir maintains constant depth, then the proposed transmitting boundary can be directly coupled with the model of dam body. In present study, the dam body is assumed to behave elastically and modeled by finite element method. Seismic responses of a dam model are investigated using the newly developed transmitting boundary.
