Five different processes were selected and tested to find an useful method of manufacturing Fe-Ti type electrode. Initially, FeTi alloy was prepared by melting in plasma arc furnace and then powdered for shaping. Electroless Ni plating on these powder particles before shaping improved the discharge characteristics. The effects of heat-treatments on the electrode characteristics were also investigated. The discharge capacities of electrods were increased with the increasing heat-treatment temperatures. When heat treated at $1000^{\circ}C$ after shaping, the best results were acquired in the discharge capacity and cycle life. Both electroless Ni plating and heat-treatment were appeared to be crucial for the performance improvement of FeTi type electrode. Fe-Ti -Mn electrodes were prepared according to the process suggested in this study and tested to verify the promising effects of that.
A faujasite NaY zeolite membrane was prepared on a tubular ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ support by the secondary growth process, and effects of permeation test conditions on the $CO_2/N_2$ separation were investigated. A NaY zeolite membrane with good $CO_2/N_2$ separation was successfully synthesized by using the hydrothermal solution ($Al_2O_3:SiO_2:Na_2O:H_2O$ = 1:6:14:840 in a molar base): at a permeation temperature of $30^{\circ}C$, its $CO_2$ permeance and $CO_2/N_2$ separation factor were $2.5{\times}10^{-7}mol/m^2secPa$ and 34, respectively. The $CO_2$ and $N_2$ permeations were highly dependent on permeation test conditions (feed composition, feeding rate, feed pressure, He sweeping rate and permeation temperature). The results indicated that (i) $CO_2$ and $N_2$ permeations through NaY zeolite membrane are governed by surface and micropore diffusions, respectively, (ii) the preparation of NaY zeolite membrane with a large permeating area is one of the most difficult hurdles for its real applications, and (iii) the retardation of $N_2$ permeation is an effective key to improve $CO_2/N_2$ separation factor in NaY zeolite membrane.
Safety concern is one of the most important parameters in the design of building demolition by explosive blasting, Accidents were sometimes reported due to the flying chips of fragmented materials In building demolition work in urban area. Laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the failure behavior of reinforced concrete pillars under blast loading and to develop an effective protection technique. Sixteen reinforced concrete pillars were constructed. The failure behavior and the flying chip velocities were observed by means of a high-speed camera. Protection scheme was designed and the effects of several protection materials were investigated. Two kinds of non-woven fabrics and wire net were tested as protection materials. The results showed that reinforcing bar was one of the important factors to determine specific charges, and that mesh size of wire net and tied-up method affected the protection of flying chips. Control of gas effects is also a key to the control of flying chips. It was recommended to use both wire net and non-woven fabrics as primary and secondary protection materials. Such protection scheme was successfully applied to the explosive demolition of apartment buildings.

High temperature superconductor $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ (YBCO) films have been grown by in-situ electron beam evaporation on artificial metal tapes such as ion-beam assisted deposition (IBAD) and rolling assisted biaxially textured substrates (RABiTS). Deposition rate of the YBCO films is $10{\sim}100{\AA}/sec$. X-ray diffraction shows that the films are grown epitaxially but have inter-diffusion phases, like as $BaZrO_3\;or\;BaCeO_3$, at their interfaces between YBCO and yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) or $CeO_2$, respectively. Secondary ion mass spectroscopy depth profile of the films confirms diffused region between YBCO and the buffer layers, indicating that the growth temperature ($850{\sim}900^{\circ}C$) is high enough to cause diffusion of Zr and Ba. The films on both the substrates show four-fold symmetry of in-plane alignment but their width in the -scan is around $12{\sim}15^{\circ}$. Transmission electron microscopy shows an interesting interface layer of epitaxial CuO between YBCO and YSZ, of which growth origin may be related to liquid flukes of Ba-Cu-O. Resistivity vs temperature curves of the films on both substrates were measured. Resistivity at room temperature is between 300 and 500 cm, the extrapolated value of resistivity at 0 K is nearly zero, and superconducting transition temperature is $85{\sim}90K$. However, critical current density of the films is very low, ${\sim}10^3A/cm^2$. Cracking of the grains and high-growth-temperature induced reaction between YBCO and buffer layers are possible reasons for this low critical current density.

We fabricated BSCCO-2212(2212) bulk superconductors by using a casting process and evaluated the superconducting properties. The effects of annealing conditions on microstructure and critical properties were studied. It was found that the homogeneous and uniform microstructure improved the critical properties and the microstructures of ingot and annealed rods were different with the size of 2212 rod and tube. The critical current($I_c$) of rods increased with increasing annealing time, probably due to increased grain size of 2212. Annealing time of the highest $I_c$ for the smaller rod(diameter of 10 mm) was shorter(150 hr) than that of the larger rod(diameter of 16 mm, 400 hr). This size effect seems to be related to different grain sizes of the intermediate phases such as 2201 and secondary phases in the ingot. In addition, we fabricated 2212 tubes from the rod by removing the center region which contained inhomogeneous microstructures. The $I_c$ of 2212 tube with the outer diameter of 16 mm and the thickness of 2 mm was measured to 844 A, which corresponds to the critical current density of $1017\;A/cm^2$ at 77 K.
The phase evolution, microstructure, and microwave dielectric properties of Sr-substituted $Ba(Mg_{0.5}W_{0.5})O_3$ ceramics, i.e., $(Ba_{1-x}Sr_x)(Mg_{0.5}W_{0.5})O_3$ ($0{\leq}x{\leq}0.30$), sintered at $1700^{\circ}C$ for 1 h were investigated. All compositions showed a 1 : 1 ordered perovskite structure. In all the compositions, $BaWO_4$ was detected as the secondary phase. With increasing x in ($Ba_{1-x}Sr_x$) $(Mg_{0.5}W_{0.5})O_3$, the lattice parameter increased linearly, indicating that a substitutional solid solution occurred. All compositions exhibited a dense microstructure. The value of ${\varepsilon}_r$ increased slightly with increasing x. The value of $Q{\times}f_0$ increased with the increase in x up to x = 0.10 and reached a saturated value of about 100,000 GHz. The composition for x = 0.20, i.e., $(Ba_{0.80}Sr_{0.20})(Mg_{0.5}W_{0.5})O_3$, sintered at $1700^{\circ}C$ for 1 h exhibited superior microwave dielectric properties of ${\varepsilon}_r=19.6$, $Q{\times}f_0=99,358GHz$, and ${\tau}_f=0.0ppm/^{\circ}C$, respectively.

The presently commercialized lithium-ion batteries use layer structured LiCoO₂ cathodes. Because of the high cost and toxicity of cobalt, an intensive search for new cathode materials has been underway in recent years. Recently, a concept of a one-to-one solid state mixture of LiNO₂ and LiMnO₂, i.e., Li[Ni/sub 0.5/Mn/sub 0.5/]O₂, was adopted by Ohzuku and Makimura to overcome the disadvantage of LiNiO₂ and LiMnO₂. Li[Ni/sub 0.5/Mn/sub 0.5/]O₂ has the -NaFeO₂ structure, which is characteristic of the layered LiCoO₂ and LiNiO₂ structures and shows excellent cycleability with no indication of spinel formation during electrochemical cycling. Layered Li[Ni/sub x/Co/sub 1-2x/Mn/sub x/]O₂ (x = 0.5 and 0.475) materials with high homogeneity and crystallinity were synthesized using a mechanical alloying method. The Li[Ni/sub 0.475/Co/sub 0.05/Mn/sub 0.475/]O₂ electrode delivers a high discharge capacity of 187 mAh/g between 2.8 and 4.6 V at a high current density of 0.3 mA/㎠(30 mA/g) with excellent cycleability. The charge/discharge and differential capacity vs. voltage studies of the Li[Ni/sub x/Co/sub 1-2x/Mn/sub x/]O₂ (x = 0.5 and 0.475) materials showed only one redox peak up to 50 cycles, which indicates that structural phase transitions are not occurred during electrochemical cycling. The magnitude of the diffusion coefficients of lithium ions for Li[Ni/sub x/Co/sub 1-2x/Mn/sub x/]O₂(x = 0.5 and 0.475) are around 10/sup -9/ ㎠/s measured by the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT).
The purpose of this study was to examine the status and science teachers' perceptions of classes for those gifted in science in elementary school. For this purpose, a number of questions were posed to teachers : 27-item-questionnaires were given to 38 teachers of students gifted in science in elementary schools located in Incheon province. The results of this study were as follows : 1. most elementary teachers were in charge of classes containing students gifted in science, but this was the case with only a few secondary teachers. Therefore, it appears to be more necessary to educate elementary teachers who majored in science content and gifted education. 2. In addition, most teachers had positive perceptions of the needs, attitudes and environments needed for gifted education. Most of them attended 60-hour training programs on gifted education. They thought that it was helpful in understanding the characteristics of gifted students, but they wanted to learn more about actual pedagogical methods through such programs. 3. The teaching methods used in classes for those gifted in science were mainly experimental activities, but there were few opportunities for creative problem solving and project learning. This may be due to limited class time of about one hour every two weeks in this class. 4. When the materials used in class were first developed, they mainly used materials made by the city board of education and selected the theme of interest by themselves. Therefore, there may be problems of duplication of materials or systems regarding the science contents for one year. 5. Furthermore, the themes of the materials used were mostly related in terms of the contents of textbooks than more generally. When planning and managing the classes for those gifted in science, the above points should be considered in order to improve the education of those students gifted in science.
$LiNi_{0.5-x}Co_{2x}Mn_{0.5-x}O_{2}$ (x = 0, 0.1, 1/6, 1.2, 0.3) were synthesized by the solid-state reaction method. The crystal structure was analyzed by X-ray powder diffraction and Rietveld refinement. $LiNi_{0.5-x}Co_{2x}Mn_{0.5-x}O_{2}$ samples give single phases of hexagonal layered structures with a space group of R-3m for x = 0.1, 1/6, 0.2, and 0.3. The lattice constants of a and c-axis were decreased with the increase in Co contents in samples. The thickness of MO2 slab was decreased and inter-slab distance was increased with the increase in Co contents in $LiNi_{0.5-x}Co_{2x}Mn_{0.5-x}O_{2}$. According to XPS analysis, the valence states of Mn, Co, and Ni in the sample are mainly +4, +3, and +3, respectively. The discharge capacity of 202 mAh/g at 0.1C-rate in the potential range of 4.7 - 3.0 V was obtained in $LiNi_{0.3}Co_{0.4}Mn_{0.3}O_2$ sample, and $LiNi_{0.4}Co_{0.2}Mn_{0.4}O_2$ gives excellent cycle performance in the same potential range.

The stems of Viburnum erosum were extracted with 80% MeOH. The concentrated extract was partitioned with EtOAc, n-BuOH, and $H_2O$. From the EtOAc and n-BuOH fractions, four compounds were isolated through the repeated $SiO_2$, octadecyl silica gel, and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatographies. Based on NMR, MS, and IR spectroscopic data, the chemical structures were determined as betulinic aldehyde (1), koaburside (2), (6R,7E,9R)-9-hydroxymegastigma-4,7-dien-3-one-9-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (3), and byzantionoside B (4). All the compounds were isolated for the first time from the stems of Viburnum erosum.
