Pollution Characteristics of PM2.5 Fine Particles Collected at Gosan Site in JeJu Island during 1997~2001 (1997~2001년 제주도 고산지역 PM2.5 미세분진의 오염 특성)

  • P $M_{2.5}$ fine particles have been collected at the Cosan measurement station in Jeju Island, and the major water-soluble components have been analyzed in order to Investigate the aerosol compositions and pollution characteristics. The mean concentrations of the components were in the order of S $O_4$$^{2-}$> N $H_4$$^{+}$> N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ > N $a^{+}$> $K^{+}$>C $l^{[-10]}$ >C $a^2$$^{+}$>M $g^2$$^{+}$. The major components were S $O_4$$^{2-}$, N $H_4$$^{+}$ and N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ , whose compositions were 58%, 18% and 10% of the total ions, respectively. Most of the components showed higher concentrations in spring season, and especially $Ca^2$$^{+}$, N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ and S $O_4$$^{2-}$ concentrations were increased 2.8, 1.9 and 1.2 times higher than the annual mean concentrations. The most parts of S $O_4$$^{2-}$ and N $H_4$$^{+}$ were distributed in fine particles below 2.1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ size, but the $Ca^2$$^{+}$, N $a^{+}$ and C $l^{[-10]}$ showed relatively higher concentrations in coarse particles. Based on the factor analysis, the P $M_{2.5}$ fine particles were considered to be largely influenced by anthropogenic sources, and followed by sea salt and soil sources. In the variations of concentrations as a function of wind direction, most components have shown higher concentrations notably as the northwesterly prevails.thwesterly prevails.

Gibberellin Production and Plant Growth Enhancement by Newly Isolated Strain of Scolecobasidium tshawytschae

  • We isolated nine endophytic fungi from the roots of salt-stressed soybean cultivar Daewonkong and screened them for growth-promoting secondary metabolites. Of all fungal isolates, P-4-3 induced maximum growth promotion of waito-c rice and soybean. Analysis of the culture filtrate of P-4-3 showed the presence of physiologically active gibberellins $GA_1$, $GA_3$, $GA_4$, and $GA_7$, along with physiologically inactive $GA_{15}$ and $GA_{24}$. The plant growth promotion and gibberellin-producing capacity of P-4-3 was much higher than wild-type Gibberella fujikuroi, which was taken as the control during the present study. The fungal isolate P-4-3 was identified as a new strain of Scolecobasidium tshawytschae through the morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of 18S rDNA sequence. Gibberellins production and plant growth promoting ability of genus Scolecobasidium was reported for the first time in the present study.

Probiotic Potential of Enterococcus faecium Isolated from Chicken Cecum with Immunomodulating Activity and Promoting Longevity in Caenorhabditis elegans

  • Probiotics, including Enterococcus faecium, confer a health benefit on the host. An Enterococcus strain was isolated from healthy chicken cecum, identified as E. faecium by 16S rDNA gene sequence analysis, and designated as E. faecium L11. To evaluate the potential of E. faecium L11 as a probiotic, the gastrointestinal tolerance, immunomodulatory activity, and lifespan extension properties of the strain were assayed. E. faecium L11 showed >66% and >62% survival in artificial gastric juice (0.3% pepsin, pH 2.5) and simulated small intestinal juice (0.5% bile salt and 0.1% pancreatin), respectively. Heat-killed E. faecium L11 significantly (p < 0.05) increased immune cell proliferation compared with controls, and stimulated the production of cytokines (IL-6 and $TNF-{\alpha}$) by activated macrophages obtained from ICR mice. In addition, E. faecium L11 showed a protective effect against Salmonella Typhimurium infection in Caenorhabditis elegans. In addition, feeding E. faecium L11 significantly (p < 0.05) extended the lifespan of C. elegans compared with the control. Furthermore, genes related to aging and host defense were upregulated in E. faecium L11-fed worms. In conclusion, E. faecium L11, which prolongs the lifespan of C. elegans, may be a potent probiotic supplement for livestock.

A Study for Improving Properties of Antiwashout Underwater Concrete Mixed with Mineral Admixtures (광물질 혼화재를 혼합한 수중불분리성 콘크리트의 물성 향상을 위한 연구)

  • Nowadays, antiwashout underwater concrete is widely used for constructing underwater concrete structures but they, especially placed in marine environment, can be easily attacked by chemical ions such as SO$\^$2-/$\_$4/ Cl$\^$-/ and Mg$\^$2+/, so the quality and capability of concrete structures go down. In this paper, to solve and improve those matters, flyash and GGBFS(ground granulated blast furnace slag) were used as partial replacements for ordinary portland cement. As results of experiments for fundamental properties of antiwashout underwater concrete containing 10, 20, 30% of flyash and 40, 50, 60 % of GGBFS respectively, setting time, air contents, suspended solids and pH value were satisfied with the "Standard Specification of Antiwashout Admixtures for Concrete" prescribed by KSCE, and also slump flow, efflux time and elevation of head were more improved than that of control concrete. From the compressive strength test, it was revealed that the antiwashout underwater concrete containing mineral admixtures(flyash and GGBFS) is more effective for long term compressive strength than control concrete. An attempt to know how durable when they are under chemical attack has also been done by immersing in chemical solutions that were x2 artificial seawater, 5 % sulphuric acid solution, 10%, sodium sulfate solution and 10% calcium chloride solution. After immersion test for 91days, XRD analysis was carried out to investigate the reactants between cement hydrates and chemical ions and some crystalline such as gypsum ettringite and Fridel′s salt were confirmed.

Anti-Corrosion Characteristics of Steel Structures with Polyaniline Anti-Corrosive Coatings (강 구조물에 대한 폴리아닐린 함유도료의 방청특성)

  • In preparative anti-corrosive coating experiments, polyaniline was obtained by reacting an oxidizing agent with the monomer aniline. Further, the primer coating was prepared using a variety of widely-used materials such as urethane resin. For the top coating, epoxy resin and acrylic urethane resin were used. Characteristics of the coatings were assessed according to KS and ASTM specifications, and the structure of the polyaniline was characterized using FT-IR and TGA. For analysis of anti-corrosive properties in salt-spray experiments, measurements of the oxidation state of iron and surface atomic analysis were conducted using XPS and SEM-EDX. Unlike general anti-corrosive coatings which exhibit anti-corrosive effects only as a primer coating, the anti-corrosive coatings using polyaniline as the anti-corrosive pigment showed a marked synergistic effect with the top coatings. In other words, the top coatings not only produce a fine view effect, but also increase, through interaction with the primer coatings, the resistance to diffusion of corrosive factors from the external environment. It was also found that, unlike the heavy metal oxide-forming layer of the passive barrier alone, the polyaniline anti-corrosive pigment oxidized iron at the interface with the iron substrate to form a passive barrier in the oxidic layer, and itself formed a potential barrier layer with anti-corrosive factors from the external environment. Although the passive layer was damaged, the damaged area did not become completely oxidized iron; on the contrary, it showed a tendency to reduction. This can be interpreted such that a passive layer is formed again on the damaged area, and that at the same time there is a tendency to self-healing.

A study on the SEI film formation as organic solvent decomposition of lithium ion batteries and its electrochemical behavior (리튬이온전지의 유기용매분해에 따른 SEI film형성과 전기화학적 거동에 관한 연구)

  • We have produced electrolyte solution out of 1.15M LiPF$\sub$6/ EC/EMC/DEC/PC(30/55/10/5 by vol%) as a reference, and at the same time, performed basic physical property test using a single solvent of 1.15M LiPF$\sub$6/DEC, DMC, EMC and a 2 component electrolyte solution of 1.15M LiPF$\sub$6/ EC/DEC(1/2 by vo%%) and PC/DEC(1/2 by vol%). Cyclic Voltammetry Analysis showed that, compared to existing carbonate organic solvent, the addition of DEC, DMC and EMC brought the de-decomposition peak of salt anion of PF$\sub$6/$\^$-/ and the solvent at lower oxidization potential of 2.3V, 0.7V and 2.1V(vs. Li/Li$\^$+/\`). In addition, a kinetics current peak, in which intercalation of Li$\^$+/ is proceeded at 750mv, 450mv(vs. Li/Li$\^$+/), was confirmed. These findings suggest that the DEC solvent decomposition occurred at an electric potential lower than that of oxidization of existing carbonate organic solvent. Through the impedance analysis, we checked electric charge transfer resistance(R$\sub$ct/) according to the electric potential of Li$\^$+/ intercalation at 750mv(vs. Li/Li$\^$+/), which was the same as the resistance (R$\sub$f/) and cyclic voltammetry of SEI film that was formed at Reference. By doing so, we found that the significant decrease of polarization resistance(R$\sub$p/) when Reference was played a part in the formation of compact SEI layer at the initial decomposition reaction.

Physical and Chemical Properties of (Sr,Mg)FeO3-y System Heat-treated in N2 (N2 분위기에서 열처리한 (Sr,Mg)FeO3-y계의 물리 및 화학적 성질)

  • The perovskite solid solutions of the $Sr_{1-x}Mg_xFe{^{3+}}_{1-{\tau}}Fe{^{4+}}_{\tau}O_{3-y}$ system (x=0.0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3) were synthesized in $N_2$ at $1,150^{\circ}C$. X-ray powder diffraction study assured that all the four samples had cubic symmetries(SM-0: $3.865{\AA}$, SM-1: $3.849{\AA}$, SM-2: $3.833{\AA}$, and SM-3: $3.820{\AA}$) and that the lattice volumes decreased steadily from $57.7{\AA}^3$ to $55.7{\AA}^3$ with x values. The nonstoichiometric chemical formulas were determined by Mohr salt analysis and with the increase of x values the amounts of $Fe^{4+}$ ion and oxygen were decreased simultaneously. Thermal analysis showed that SM-0 started to lose its oxygen at $450^{\circ}C$ and SM-1, Sm-2, and SM-3 began to lose their oxygen at around $350{\sim}400^{\circ}C$. SM-0 showed almost reversible weight change in the cooling process. All the samples exhibited semiconducting behaviors in the temperature range of $10{\sim}400^{\circ}C$. Conductivities of the 4 samples were decreased in the order of SM-0, SM-1, SM-2, and SM-3 at constant temperature. The activation energies of the conductions were in the range of 0.176 eV~0.244 eV.

Resistance Analysis of Cultivars and Occurrence Survey of Fusarium Wilt on Strawberry (국내 딸기 시들음병 발생실태와 품종별 저항성 분석)

  • The occurrence of Fusarium wilt in strawberry fields in Korea was assessed from 2001 to 2003. Fusarium wilt was found from June to August in nursery beds, from September to October after planting in production beds, and from January to March during harvesting period. The symptoms were root rots, discolored vascular tissue in the crown and deformation and yellowing of central leaflets. The disease occurred in up to 30% of plants in 37 of 214 fields surveyed. Fusarium wilt occurred from cvs. ‘Dochiodome’, ‘Maehyang’, ‘Redpearl’, ‘Samaberry ’ and ‘Akihime’ and more severe from cvs. ‘Samaberry’, ‘Maehyang’ and ‘Dochiodome’. Infested soils had high salt concentrations, high nitrogen, phosphate concentrations and low pH. The results of pathogenicity test showed that Fo47 and Fo79 isolated from cvs. ‘Dochiodome’ and ‘Samaberry’ were strong pathogenic to all of four cultivars, and ‘Dochiodome’, ‘Redpearl’, ‘Maehyang’ were relatively susceptible to the all isolates.

Relationship between Chloride Diffusivity and the Fundamental Properties of Concrete (염소이온의 확산계수와 콘크리트의 기초물성과의 관계)

  • Marine concrete structure is exposed to salt injury and deteriorated by steel corrosion due to chloride ions diffusion. It, therefore, is very important to estimate the chloride diffusivity in concrete. In this paper the compressive strength and permeable pore volume of concrete are measured and the diffusion coefficient and penetration depth of chloride ions in concrete were investigated to estimate the chloride diffusivity efficiently. To correlate these results each other, regression analysis was done. The results showed a good linear relation between chloride diffusivity and the fundamental properties of concrete and the chloride diffusivity of concrete with water-cement ratios of $40%{\sim}60%$ were about $2.5{\sim}6.6{\times}10^{-12}m^2/s$.

Dudleya brittonii extract promotes survival rate and M2-like metabolic change in porcine 3D4/31 alveolar macrophages

  • Objective: Although alveolar macrophages play a key role in the respiratory immunity of livestock, studies on the mechanism of differentiation and survival of alveolar macrophages are lacking. Therefore, we undertook to investigate changes in the lipid metabolism and survival rate, using 3D4/31 macrophages and Dudleya brittonii which has been used as a traditional asthma treatment. Methods: 3D4/31 macrophages were used as the in vitro porcine alveolar macrophages model. The cells were activated by exposure to phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA). Dudleya brittonii extraction was performed with distilled water. For evaluating the cell survival rate, we performed the water-soluble tetrazolium salt cell viability assay and growth curve analysis. To confirm cell death, cell cycle and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were measured using flow cytometric analysis by applying fluorescence dye dichlorofluorescein diacetate and propidium iodide. Furthermore, we also evaluated cellular lipid accumulation with oil red O staining, and fatty acid synthesis related genes expression levels using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) with SYBR green dye. Glycolysis, fatty acid oxidation, and tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle related gene expression levels were measured using qPCR after exposure to Dudleya brittonii extract (DB) for 12 h. Results: The ROS production and cell death were induced by PMA treatment, and exposure to DB reduced the PMA induced downregulation of cell survival. The PMA and DB treatments upregulated the lipid accumulation, with corresponding increase in the acetyl-CoA carboxylase alpha, fatty acid synthase mRNA expressions. DB-PMA co-treatment reduced the glycolysis genes expression, but increased the expressions of fatty acid oxidation and TCA cycle genes. Conclusion: This study provides new insights and directions for further research relating to the immunity of porcine respiratory system, by employing a model based on alveolar macrophages and natural materials.
