  • This paper proposes the improved transition scheme for a sensorless drive of an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM). In order to operate the IPMSM, the current controller can be used until 300 rpm for the initial operation. After that, the control method of IPMSM is changed to the speed controller for the sensorless control method. At that point, the rotor speed overshoot is generated due to the rapid change of the current reference for the speed controller. The proposed algorithm is able to reduce the overshoot of a rotor speed by compensating the estimated feedforward value to the speed controller. The feedforward value of the current reference is estimated by using a coordinate transformation and is approximated to the current reference after the transition of the control mode. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified by experiments using an IPMSM drive system.

  • For accurate speed and current control in industrial applications, SRM (Switched Reluctance Motor) is very important to synchronize the stator phase excitation and rotor position in the drive due to its nature. In general, position sensors such as encoder and resolver are used to generate rotational force by exciting the stator winding according to the rotor position and to control the motor by using speed and position information. However, for these sensors, 1) the cost of the sensors is quite large in terms of price, so the proportion of the motor system to the total system cost is high. 2) In terms of mechanical, position sensors such as encoders and resolvers are attached to the stator to increase the size and weight. In conclusion, in order to drive the SRM, control based on the rotor position information should be basically performed, and it is important to design the SRM driving system according to the environment in consideration of the application field. Therefore, in this paper, we intend to study the driving and control characteristics of SRM through variable switching duty control by designing a low-cost analog driving device, deviating from the general control system using the conventional encoder and resolver.

  • This paper deals with the modeling and simulation to control the torque and speed of an induction motor using field-oriented control methods. Rotor flux is estimated using the indirect sensing method based on the rotor circuit equation in the synchronously rotation reference frame, and slip angle and rotor position are calculated from rotor angular velocity and stator current. As results of modeling and digital simulation with a voltage source inverter, it is shown that the proposed scheme gives good static and dynamic performance to the induction motor drive.

  • Optimization method for the open loop commutation time intervals in HDD spindle start-up control is presented in this paper. A hard disk drive(HDD) uses a sensorless brushless DC motor(BLDC) for the platter rotation. Because there is no direct sensor for the rotor position, open loop commutations after sensing the rotor position at a standstill using inductive sensing method are performed to speed up the rotor up to a certain speed where the zero crossings of the back electromotive force(EMF) are measurable. Therefore successful open loop commutations are necessary for the stable start-up control of the spindle motors. Random neighborhood search(RNS) algorithm is introduced as a optimization technic in this paper. Rotor speed and its standard deviation are used as a cost function and commutation intervals obtained from the spindle motion equation are used as initial parameter values for the RNS. With the help of the proposed method optimized open loop commutation time intervals for the very low start-up current are acquired and tested. The experimental results shows that the proposed method can decrease the start-up failure rate of a HDD spindle motor.

  • In Brushless DC Motor, there are Permanent Magnets (PMs) with driving circuit and sensor for detecting to rotor position and rotation speed. In the case of using hall IC sensor which response to magnetic flux, that is required to additional sensor magnet for rotor position detecting. Most of BLDC motor, However, take asymmetrical overhang of PM in rotor instead of additional sensor magnet for operating of hall IC sensor. The asymmetrical overhang of PM occur rotor thrust to z-axis direction that is lead to not only damage of bearing but also intensive noise and vibration. Therefore, the analysis of magnet overhang effect in the side of vibration and drive to hall If sensor is required to precise. In this paper, 2-D Finite Element Method is used to solve precise field computation and thrust of z-axis direction considering asymmetrical magnet overhang. And also the z-axis thrust from the analysis result is compared to experimental result. In conclusion, the purpose of this paper minimize to noise and vibration of BLDC Motor as analyzes to asymmetrical magnet overhang effect.

  • The advantage of the squirrel cage induction motor is the brushless rotor. This advantage for operation and maintenance turns out to be a disadvantage for the detection of the cage rotor bar and endring defects, which means that the detection of cage faults is due to the measurement and analysis of only the stator input signals. The monitoring task in an inverter drive is complicated mainly because the voltage and current waveforms are nonsinusoidal and the high dv/dt values from fast switching inverterd distort the measurements. in this paper, we are going to discuss the detection method of broken rotor bar of squirrel cage induction motor by the motor current signal analysis(MCSA).

  • In the field of industrial drives, the vector control of the induction motor has been widely used to achieve the good control performance. In this paper, to require the information of rotor flux in direct vector control scheme, the flux observer by current model of rotor circuit is used. This flux observer is not only available at low-speed region bt good for the error reduction by feedback properties. Also, employing the flux observer on rotor reference frame, the robustness of decoupling control to the observation of rotor flux can be achieved. Through digital simulation and DSP-based IGBT inverter system, the validity for practical implementation is verified.

  • This paper presents a method of detecting rotor position for single phase Switched Reluctance Motors(SRMs) using a search coil. In the single phase SRM, mainly Hall effect sensors or photo interrupters have been used to detect the rotor position. But these sensors have many disadvantages. In this paper, low cost and robust characteristics of rotor position detection method are focused in order to compensate for disadvantage of existing sensors. Search coils wound around the stator pole are used for detection of the rotor position in single phase SRM. Rotor position detection is achieved through electromotive force patterns induced by time-varying flux linkage in the search coil. The simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the performance of the proposed method in this paper.

  • This paper describes the conceptual design and development test procedure of a unmanned scaled-down personal air vehicle(PAV) with drive and flight dual mode capability. Trade studies on operational requirements led to the suggestion of a quad tilt prop platform which has nacelle tilt capability with multi rotor configuration. Motors for propeller propulsion and driving mechanism were integrated into a single nacelle, then they were implemented by nacelle tilt mechanism for conversion between the drive and the flight modes. Primary design parameters and initial specifications were confirmed through conceptual design, then functional tests were performed with the test platforms for the drive and the flight modes.

  • The aerodynamic loads at the blade hub and the drive shaft for 1MW horizontal axis wind turbine are calculated numerically. The geometric shape of the blade such as chord length and twist angle can be obtained fran the aerodynamic optimization procedure. Various airfoil data, that is thick airfoils at hub side and thin airfoils at tip side, are distributed along the spanwise direction of the rotor blade. Under the wind data fulfilling design load cases based on the IEC61400-1, all of the shear forces, bending moments at the hub and the low speed shaft of the drive train are obtained by using the FAST code. It shows that shear forces and bending moments have a periodic. trend. These oscillating aerodynamic loads will lead to the fatigue problem at both of the hub and drive train From the load analysis the maximum shear forces and bending moments are generated when wind turbine generator system operates in the case of the extreme speed wind condition.
