  • This paper presents a novel time-domain method for the identification of plastic rotations and stiffness parameters of single-bay frames with nonlinear plastic hinges. Each plastic hinge is modelled as a pseudo-semi-rigid connection with nonlinear hysteretic moment-curvature characteristics at an element end. Through the comparison of the identified end rotations of members that are connected together, the plastic rotation that furnishes information of the locations and plasticity degrees of plastic hinges can be identified. The force consideration of the frame members may be used to relate the stiffness parameters to the elastic rotations and the excitation. The damped-least-squares method and damped-and-weighted-least-squares method are adopted to estimate the stiffness parameters of frames. A noise-removal strategy employing a de-noising technique based on wavelet packets with a smoothing process is used to filter out the noise for the parameter estimation. The numerical examples show that the proposed method can identify the plastic rotations and the stiffness parameters using measurements with reasonable level of noise. The unknown excitation can also be estimated with acceptable accuracy. The advantages and disadvantages of both parameter estimation methods are discussed.

  • In this study, it was intended to compare the two methodologies for forest management project through extension of rotation age: Korean Forest Carbon Offset Standard (KFOS) and Verified Carbon Standard (VCS). The amount of carbon removals and offset credits based on the two methodologies and their trends were analyzed in this study. The major difference between two methodologies were found at the process of estimation of baseline carbon removals. For instance, average carbon stock during the project period was used for estimation of baseline carbon removals in KFOS, while average carbon stock change during the 100 years was used in VCS. Due to the different approach for estimation of baseline carbon removal, the estimated offset credits were also different according to the two methodologies. In this study, 15 project scenarios were considered for comparison of two methodologies : 5 major coniferous stands in Korea (Pinus densiflora in Gangwon region, Pinus densiflora in Central region, Pinus koraiensis, Larix leptolepis, Chamaecyparis obtusa) with 3 project periods (30, 35, 40 years). The results showed that estimated carbon offset credits based on the KFOS methodology were higher for all 15 scenarios compared to those based on the VCS methodology. The KFOS showed a steep decline in the annual offset credit as project period gets longer, thus it is not desirable for projects with longer period. VCS is more acceptable for longer projects with a small difference according to the project periods. The results also indicated that Pinus densiflora in Gangwon, Pinus koraiensis, and Larix leptolepis are more desirable species for forest management project through the extension of ration age.

  • In this paper, an efficient frequency offset synchronization structure for OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) is proposed. Conventional CORDIC(Coordinate Rotation Digital Computer) algorithm for frequency offset synchronization utilizes two CORDIC hardware i.e., one is vector mode for phase estimation, the other is rotation mode for compensation. But proposed structure utilizes one CORDIC hardware and divider. Through simulation, it is shown that hardware implementation complexity is reduced compared with conventional structures. The Verilog-HDL coding and front-end chip implementation results for the proposed structure show 22.1% gate count reduction comparison with those of the conventional structure.

  • Low back disorders (LBDs) are one of the most common and costly work-related musculoskeletal disorders. One of the major possible risk factors of LBDs is to work with static and awkward trunk postures, especially in a complex trunk posture involving flexion, twisting and lateral bending simultaneously. This study is to examine the effect of complex trunk postures on the postural stresses using a psychophysical method. Twelve healthy male students participated in an experiment, in which 29 different trunk postures were evaluated using the magnitude estimation method. The results showed that subjective discomfort significantly increased as the levels of trunk flexion, lateral bending and rotation increased. Significant interaction effects were found between rotation and lateral bending or flexion when the severe lateral bending or rotation were assumed, indicating that simultaneous occurrence of trunk flexion, lateral bending and rotation increases discomfort ratings synergistically. A postural workload evaluation scheme of trunk postures was proposed based on the angular deviation levels from the neutral position. Each trunk posture was assigned numerical stress index depending upon its discomfort rating, which was defined as the ratio of discomfort of a posture to that of its neutral posture. Four qualitative action categories for the stress index were also provided in order to enable practitioners to apply corrective actions appropriately. The proposed scheme is expected to be applied to several field areas for evaluating trunk postural stresses.

  • In this paper, we propose a parametric sparse recovery algorithm(SRA) applied to a radar signal model, based on the compressive sensing(CS), for the ISAR(Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar) image reconstruction from an incomplete radar-cross-section(RCS) data and for the estimation of rotation rate of a target. As the SRA, the iteratively-reweighted-least-square(IRLS) is combined with the radar signal model including chirp components with unknown chirp rate in the cross-range direction. In addition, the particle swarm optimization(PSO) technique is considered for searching correct parameters related to the rotation rate. Therefore, the parametric SRA based on the IRLS can reconstruct ISAR image and estimate the rotation rate of a target efficiently, although there exists missing data in observed RCS data samples. The performance of the proposed method in terms of image entropy is also compared with that of the traditional interpolation methods for the incomplete RCS data.

  • Since hold-type display systems have been developed, frame-rate up conversion (FRUC) is an essential technique to improve the temporal resolution in the display. FRUC improves the temporal resolution by interpolating one or multiple intermediate frames between two adjacent frames. In this paper, a new frame-rate up-conversion algorithm based on bilateral motion refinement with rotation is proposed. First, we perform bi-directional motion estimation between adjacent two frames to obtain a motion vector for each block. Then, we apply a modified median filtering to motion vectors for outlier-rejection and motion field smoothing. The filtered motion vectors are updated by the bilateral motion refinement with rotation. After the refined motion vector is obtained, the intermediate frame is generated by applying the overlapped block motion compensation (OBMC). Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm provides a better performance than the previous methods subjectively and objectively.

  • This paper researches on the scheme superimposing the rotation phases over the pilot and data symbols in order to reduce the peak-to-average power ratio(PAPR) of the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) communication. The bandwidth and power efficiency are the main consideration. The phases of rotation vector are added to those of both pilot symbols and data symbols interlaying between any two pilot symbols in an OFDM block. Owing to this scheme the transmitter reduces the PAPR using the partial transmit sequences(PTS) and the receiver restores the data symbol utilizing the channel estimation of pilot symbols. Therefore, the bandwidth efficiency is accomplished by not using the further subcarriers for the reduction of PAPR and the enormous increase of bit error rate according to the receiving error of the side information, i.e. the phases of rotation vector, is prevented. In other words, both bandwidth-and power-efficiency and quality of communication performance can be improved.

  • This paper reports a combined depth- and model-based face detection and tracking approach. The proposed algorithm consists of four functional modules; i) color-based candidate region extraction, ii) generation of the depth histogram for handling occlusion, iii) rotation-invariant face region detection using ellipse fitting, and iv) face tracking based on motion prediction. This technique solved the occlusion problem under complicated environment by detecting the face candidate region based on the depth-based histogram and skin colors. The angle of rotation was estimated by the ellipse fitting method in the detected candidate regions. The face region was finally determined by inversely rotating the candidate regions by the estimated angle using Haar-like features that were robustly trained robustly by the frontal face.

  • This paper proposes a new method for image composition which estimates the rotation angle of human hand and uses the reserved image in real-time camera images. First, we capture a background image and extract a interesting region by background subtraction. Next, we estimate the skin region from the interesting region and calculate the rotation angle of estimated skin region using PCA(Principal Components Analysis). Finally, we composite the reserved image for the calculated rotation angle in camera images. The proposed method can be applied to control the 3D avatar for marker-less augmented reality.
