The cablebolt which secures a workability and stability has been used in foreign countries as one of supporting materials with rebar rockbolt especially in construction of large underground structures. However, only the rebar rockbolt has been applied up to now to all the constructions of underground structures in Korea due to an absence of recognition of cablebolt and large underground structure projects. Consequently, the research for a performance evaluation and verification of cablebolt is very limited and only the proto-type field tests have been conducted. In this study, the cone-shaped button cablebolt is developed by modifying an existing button cablebolt. To evaluate a performance and applicability of cone-shaped button cablebolt, the laboratory pull tests are conducted and bond capacity is analyzed under a various conditions. The rebar rockbolt, plane cablebolt, and bulb cablebolt which has a similar mechanical behavior with cone-shaped button cablebolt, are also tested and their bond capacities are evaluated and compared with cone-shaped button cablebolt under the same condition. The results show that the bond capacity is in the order of (cone-shaped button cablebolt$\approx$bulb cablebolt) > rockbolt > plane cablebolt. It is found that the bond capacity of cone-shaped button cablebolt developed in this study is at least equivalent with an existing high performance cablebolt developed in foreign countries, therefore the cone-shaped button cablebolt could be used as one of supporting materials for underground structures in construction field.

For the tunnel pattern of PD-3, a numerical analysis using the FEM program, MrSoil, was conducted with given geotechnical properties of surrounding rockmasses to verify the analysis results by comparing with other programs. The analyzed domain was extended to the far enough distance from the excavation surface to avoid the restrained effect by the boundary condition, and the construction sequence was employed in the analysis as calculation steps to simulate the time dependent 3 dimentional behavior of surrounding ground due to tunneling. Maximum 35 mm of the tunnel crown settlement and about 13 mm of the surface settlement were computed and the amount of settlement may not give any structural damage on the concrete structures on the ground surface. The shotcrete stress of 84 kg/cm2 and the rockbolt axial force of 9 ton as a maximum are within the allowable limit. The plastic zone was restricted near the excavation surface, but forepoling around the crown may be required to prevent rock falling. It is believed that the tunnel is designed reasonablely from the economical and safety points of view.

Since the blast vibration induced by explosives of the powder possibly provide damage of the nearby structures adjacent to the tunnel, the stability of the nearby structures should be estimated. In this study, the stability of the tunnel based on the allowable peak particle velocity of the structures as well as allowable stress of the structures presented in the concrete structural design standard was estimated with respect to the stress of the concrete lining and axial force of the rockbolt during the blasting operation at the ground surface of the pre-existing tunnel. The analyses were carried out by using $FLAC^{2D}$ which is one of the programs developed based on the finite difference method. The bending compressive stress and shear stress of the concrete lining and axial force of the rockbolt were rapidly increased when the blasting operation was conducted near the tunnel.
A numerical stability analysis was conducted on the large oil storage caverns excavated in a rock mass under high initial horizonal stress. The behaviors of the surrounding rock mass, rockbolts, and shotcrete were analyzedr and stability of the support members were assessed. For a proper support system design, the effect of the modelling technique, cavern shape and rockbolt length on the stability of the cavern was investigated. Results show that installation timing of supports and the change in cavern shape due to stepwise excavation affect the stress induced in support members. Also found was desperate need for a numerical technique which can properly reflect the behavior of the steel fiber reinforced shotcrete.
Nowadays, some studies have been performed for rockbolt method widely used in Korea. To make large slopes, tunnels or rock structures stable, supporting systems, such as anchor bolt, rock bolt which are developed recently, are commonly used. In this study, laboratory pullout tests were carried out to compare the characteristics of rock bolt that is most widely used with ones of rock bolt by newly developed circular model testers. Re-pullout test for the rock bolt in which loading and unloading cycles are repeated several times showed that the maximum pullout load is almost constant irrespective of the number of loading cycles, which may be due to no failure between rock bolt and filler that is filled with soils and concrete as a substitute. A development of rock bolt fillers as supporters using to protect people in tunnels and slopes is reviewed as a probable man-made hazard after excavation works. The functions of the grouted rock bolts associated with reinforcement effects also should be assessed in this study, which develop the sealing apparatus preventing from overflowing mortar out of a rock bolt hole for securing safety in the tunnel and slopes in order to secure stability named the sealing packer.

For the huge section of tunnel, it is highly required to observe the role of each rock support and their effect of rock reinforcement in order to investigate more reasonable rock support structure. Especially for unstable tunnel situation with no shotcrete strength right after an excavation, sufficient investigation is needed for rock support structure. In this paper, we clarify the relations of compressive strength and material age, cohesion strength and material age, and cohesion stiffness and material age of grout with time-dependence through tests and numerical analysis simulation with trial rock mass considering hardening of bolt grouting material. By means of this process, effect of rock reinforcement for rockbolt is investigated right after an excavation and modelling and physical constants of young aged rockbolts are obtained. Additionally, the effect of rock reinforcement with hydraulic tensile friction bolt is examined right after an excavation, which grout effect is no need to be waited.

This paper describes the load distribution and settlement of rockbolted-drilled shafts subjected to axial and lateral loads with the view to shortening the embedded depth of the pile shaft. The emphasis was on quantifying the reinforcing effects of rockbolts placed from the shafts to surrounding weathered rocks based on small-scale model tests peformed on instrumented piles. The major influencing parameters on reinforcing drilled shaft behavior are the number, the positions on the shaft, the grade, and the inclination angle at which the rockbolts are placed. The model tests was 1/40 scaled simulations of the behavior of the drilled shafts with varying combinations of the major influencing parameters. The incremental effects of reinforcement based on the various parameters have been weighed against load transfer characteristics before and after rockbolt installations.

Recently occurred earthquake Gyeongju and Pohang served as a momentum to remind that Korean peninsular is not a safety zone from earthquake anymore. The importance of seismic design, therefore, have been realized and researches regarding design response spectrum have been actively carried out by many researchers and engineers. Current tunnel seismic design method is conducted to check safety of tunnel structure by dynamic numerical analysis with condition of completed lining installation, so, it is impossible to consider safety of tunnel behavior under construction. In this study, therefore, dynamic numerical analysis considering seismic wave propagations has been performed after back analysis using results from field monitoring of tunnel under construction in fractured zone and 1st reinforcement (shotcrete, rockbolt) behaviour are analyzed. Waves are classified by period characteristic (short and long). As a result, the difference depending on period characteristic is minor, and increasements of displacement are obtained at crown displacement due to seismic wave is 28~31%, 14~16% at left side of tunnel in the fractured zone, 13~27% at right side of tunnel in the bed rock, respectively. In case of shotcrete axial force is increased 113~115% at tunnel crown, 102% at left side, 106~110% at right side, respectively. Displacement and axial force of rockbolts which are selected by type of anchored grounds (only fractured zone, fractured zone and bed rock, only bedrock) are analyzed, as a result, rockbolt which is anchored to fractured zone and bed rock at the same time are weaker than any other case.

For initial stability of the tunnel, the primary support, Shotcrete and rockbolt shall be placed in the most appropriate time. This is because the role of such support plays a vital role in long-term and short-term tunnel stability. In this study, the rock bolt is an important supporting system that receives the external pressure generated by the stress relaxation during tunnel excavation as axial force and transmits it to the shotcrete on the tunnel excavation surface. Until now, most of the materials of rock bolts have been used in the field, but there have been many problems such as uncertain quality of Chinese materials entering the market, poor packing due to falling down of rock bolts when filled with mortar, and corrosion due to water. Therefore, in this study, we have developed a high strength steel pipe rock bolt using Autobeam material to solve and improve various problems of existing rock bolts. In order to evaluate the performance of the developed bolt, field tests were carried out and the existing mortar filler in order to improve the performance of the rock bolt, the design and construction criteria were studied and the results were included in this paper.

Rockbolts are the primary-supports in NATM tunnels and are widely used at tunnel construction sites. Among the rockbolts methods applied in domestic tunnel design, fully grouted rockbolts are the most representative and frequently used. Fully grouted rockbolts exhibit relative behavior between the bolt and the ground due to the grout material. However, during numerical analysis for tunnel design, fully grouted rockbolts are often modeled in a way that does not reflect their behavior characteristics. This may result in underestimating or overestimating the force of the supports. Based on a literature review, it was analyzed that fully grouted rockbolts are modeled using truss element or cable element. To analyze the effect of grout properties of cable elements on rockbolts behavior, this paper compared the behavior of rockbolts in two models: one estimating grout properties based on rockbolt pull-out test data, and another assuming complete adhesion between the rockbolts and the ground by applying large grout properties. Under identical tunnel conditions, the numerical analysis was conducted by modeling the fully grouted rockbolts differently using truss and cable elements, and the tunnel behavior was analyzed. The research results suggest that modeling fully grouted rockbolts as a function of the interface effect between the bolts and the ground, specifically considering grout, is desirable. The use of pull-out test data to simulate the behavior of actual fully grouted rockbolts was considered as a valid approach.
