  • Blasting vibrations velocity had been used to design blasting pattern and predict damage-possibility of structures. As vibration levels are currently required to estimate the damage concerning human-body and livestock, so measured vibration velocities must be transformed into vibration levels. In this study, the digital filter program was developed to transform measured data into vibration levels. Simple harmonic vibrations and measured data obtain by Blastmate series (Instantel Inc.) were applied to the digital filter program. As a result, simple harmonic vibrations and measured data were successfully transformed into vibration levels using the developed program. Measured data from any instrument with ASCII output-function will similarly be transformed into level units.

  • This research was aimed to figure out the trend of dust diffusion at open pit limestone mine for assessing the environmental impacts on the high voltage power transmission line. It is rather easy to assess the dust generation and size distribution of limestone dust at the blasting site, but it is very hard to assess the expected area of dust diffusion and amount of dust fall by the distances from the dust source. In this research, a 3-dimensional fluid dynamic simulation software (3D-Flow) was used for analysing the above mentioned matters to assess the impacts to the insulators on the transmission tower by the blasting dust. It was verfied that the 3D-Flow is reliable tool for simulating dust movement, and the limestone dust is not much hazardous to the power transmission line.

  • Recently, many cities have always been affected by large natural disasters such as floods and landslides. As climate change causes more frequent localized heavy rains exceeding the conveyance capacity of sewer, flood damage is expected to increase. For the sake of reducing the urban flood damage by changed rainfall, there has been many trials on installation of runoff-reducing facilities. Therefore, it was required to study about reasonable analysis and countermeasure of rainwater storage facility project for extending it. This study was to review the status of rainwater storage facility project for the urban disaster prevention in Busan, to find out problems, and to propose the countermeasure of rainwater storage facility project for the urban disaster prevention.

  • In this study, a new quantitative instrumentation and measurement standards applicable to the field of mining has been proposed to improve the problems of the current measurement practices that apply the measuring standards of the civil engineering field (road, railway, etc.). With the data coordination of the mine reclamation corporation, we collected data on ground subsidence in the abandoned mine area, and studied various techniques for establishing a new management reference value based on the manual measurement data measured in the field. As a result, new instrumentation and measurement standards is set up and proposed by using statistics like the average value, the third quartile, the 95% confidence, and the maximum value.

  • Coastal aquifers may serve as major sources fur freshwater. In many coastal aquifers, intrusion of seawater has become one of the major constraints imposed on groundwater utilization. The management of groundwater in coastal acquifers means making decision as to the pumping rate and the spatial distribution of wells. Several numerical techniques for flow and solute transport simulation can provide the means to achieve this goal. As a basic study to predict the intrusion of seawater in coastal phreatic aquifers, the coupled flow and solute transport analysis was conducted by use of the 3-D finite element code, SWICHA. In order to understand how the location and the shape of freshwater-seawater transition zone were affected by the boundary conditions and hydrogeologic variables, parametric study was carried out.

  • The effectiveness of UAM is generally accepted, but there has not been much rigorous study on UAM and its mechanical support mechanism is yet to be established. Also, most of UAM installations depend on empirical judgement rather than on engineering knowledge. In this study, an attempt to confirm the support effects and to understand the support mechanism of UAM has been made by analyzing the mechanical behavior of umbrella pipes installed in various ground conditions. The effects of overburden thickness, pipe size, overlap length and the placement of steel arch are studied using a three-dimensional finite element method. From the numerical parametric study, the support mechanism of UAM has been confirmed by analyzing the structural forces in the umbrella pipes due to the excavation.

  • In order to generate electricity from geothermal energy for non-volcanic region, the concept of enhanced geothermal system (EGS) is introduced which forms an artificial reservoir by injecting high pressure fluid to 5 km deep and circulating geothermal fluid through the reservoir. Demonstration studies have been conducted in various countries and regions for determining the feasibility of EGS. In this technical note, experiences, errors, and implications of EGS demonstration projects in UK Rosemanowes and Australia Cooper Basin which have been carried out since 2002 are introduced to be used for the EGS demonstration project in Korea.

  • In this study, a stabilizing equipment was developed to resolve the problems of existing stabilization construction method for contaminated soil. The field application and workability of the stabilizing equipment were verified through field demonstration tests and laboratory tests. The field application of the stabilizing equipment was identified through field demonstration tests. As a result of laboratory tests for field mixed soil, the mixing capability of stabilizer of the developed construction method was better than that of existing construction method.

  • This paper deals with Poisson's ratio and volumetric strain behavior on loading-reloading terms under uniaxial condition targeting 404 individual rocks, which include sedimentary rocks as sandstone, shale, mudstone, conglomerate and tuff on Kyungsang basin. Poisson' ratio demonstrates increase, convergence and decrease behavior according to the increase in load, which results in preponderance of increase behavior. Volumetric strain demonstrates normal, positive and negative behavior according to the increase in load, which results in preponderance of normal behavior. On practice, Poisson's ratio can be indicative of high or low values with low values of design load. Consequently, a careful selection of results in in-situ sample experiment should be made and varying design conditions should be considered.

  • This paper deals with a hydraulic fracturing technique, which is one of the methods to maximize the recovery rate and productivity of oil and gas in the petroleum industry. In the hydraulic fracturing, typically water mixed with sand and chemicals is injected into a wellbore in order to create artificial fractures along which formation fluids migrate to the well. In recent years, it is widely used in non-conventional oil and gas such as oil shale and shale gas. Three main stages of the hydraulic fracturing process, the proposed design models for the effective hydraulic fracturing and diagnostics after fracturing treatment are introduced. In addition, this paper introduces reservoir geomechanics to solve various problems in the process of hydraulic fracturing.
