According to the way of the robot control, the robot systems of all the teams which participate in the MIROSOT can be divided into three categories : the remote brainless system, the vision-based system and the robot-based system. The MIRAGE I robot control system uses the last one, the robot-based system. In the robot-based system the host computer with the vision system transmits the data on only the location of the ball and the robots. Based on this robot control method, we took part in the MIROSOT '96 and the MIROSOT '97.

With the rapid growth of the Internet, the Internet-based robot has been realized by connecting off-line robot to the Internet. However, because the Internet is often irregular and unreliable, the varying time delay in data transmission is a significant problem for the construction of the Internet-based robot system. Thus, this paper is concerned with the development of an Internet-based robot system, which is insensitive to the Internet time delay. For this purpose, the PPS (Position Prediction Simulator) is suggested and implemented on the system. The PPS consists of two parts : the robot position prediction part and the projective virtual scene part. In the robot position prediction part, the robot position is predicted for more accurate operation of the mobile robot, based on the time at which the user's command reaches the robot system. The projective virtual scene part shows the 3D visual information of a remote site, which is obtained through image processing and position prediction. For the verification of this proposed PPS, the robot was moved to follow the planned path under the various network traffic conditions. The simulation and experimental results showed that the path error of the robot motion could be reduced using the developed PPS.
Due to the newly emerging market for telepresence robots and the research in the area, designers and developers lack guidelines for specifying the physical characteristics of telepresence robots. On the basis of the previous literature, we attempted to make a distinction between two robot height approaches for telepresence robot designs: floor- versus desk-based robot designs. This research investigated the effects of these robot height approaches on consumer acceptance. We predicted that there would be difference between floor-based robots and desk-based robots regarding consumers' evaluation of and intent to purchase social robots. A study using two types of robots was conducted with sixty university students. The results showed that participants perceived desk-based robots as more useful than floor-based robots. In addition, the participants evaluated desk-based robots more positively than floor-based robots. Purchase intention and willingness to pay also showed similar results as evaluation. The implications for the design of telepresence robots in terms of increasing acceptance of robots are discussed in detail.
The purpose of this paper is to suggest the methodology for the establishment of operational concept for speed-up of defense robot and improvement direction of the defense acquisition system for the defense robot. In order to achieve this goal, the current defense acquisition system was analyzed into long-term planning, mid-term programming, and project execution stages. And I suggest the methodology for the establishment of operational concept for speed-up of defense robot and direction of development of the defense robot acquisition system considering the characteristics of the robot in terms of core technologies of robot, robot ecosystem and effectiveness-based-robot-design, respectively. Based on the methodology for establishment of the operational concept of defense robot and development direction of the defense acquisition system presented in this study, it will be possible to design efficiently the defense robot in the future.

This paper describes a multi-mobile robot system with fuzzy rule based structure in collision avoidance. Collision avoidance is an important function to perform a given task collaboratively and cooperatively in multi-mobile robot environments. So the important but challenging problem is handled in this paper. Considered obstacles for collision avoidance between multi mobile robots are static, dynamic, or both of them at the same time. Using the fuzzy rule based structure, distance and angle from a robot to obstacles are described as fuzzy linguistic values and steering angle for the robot are updated from the collision environments. As a result, the multi-mobile robot can modify a global path from a robot itself to its own target. In addition, avoiding collision with static or dynamic obstacles for the robot system can be achieved. Simulation based experimental results are given to show usefulness of this method.
Until now, many networked robots have been connected to the Internet for the various applications. With these networked robots, very long distance teleoperation can be possible through the Internet. However, the promising area of the Internet-based teleoperation may be distance learning, because of several reasons such as the unpredictable characteristics of the Internet. In robotics class, students learn many theories about robots, but it is hard to perform the actual experiments for all students due to the rack of the real robots and safety problems. Some classes may introduce the virtual robot simulator for students to program the virtual robot and upload their program to operate the real robot through the off-line programming method. However, the students may also visit the laboratory when they want to use the real robot for testing their program. In this paper, we developed an Internet-based robot education system. The developed system was composed of two parts, the robotics class materials and the web-based Java3d robot simulator. That is, this system can provide two services for distance learning to the students through the Internet. The robotics class materials can be provided to the student as the multimedia contents on the web page. As well, the web-based robot simulator as the real experiment tool can help the students get good understanding about certain subject. So, the students can learn the required robotics theories and perform the real experiments from their web browser when they want to study themselves at any time.

This paper proposes the system model that is more efficient and active than formal home automation system and it can conquer the limits of formal one using intelligent mobile robot. This system uses specialized intelligent mobile robot for home environment and the robot moves around home instead of human. We call the system model to HAuPIRS (Home Automation system using PDA based Intelligent Robot System). HAuPIRS control architecture is composed three parts and each part is User Level, Cognitive Level, Executive Level. It is easy to use system and possible to extend the home apparatus from new technology. We made the PBMoRo System (PDA Based Mobile Robot System) based on HAuPIRS architecture and verified the efficiency of the system model.

Nowadays, research on human-robot interaction has been getting increasing attention. In the research field of human-robot interaction, speech signal processing in particular is the source of much interest. In this paper, we report a speaker localization system with six microphones for a humanoid robot called MAHRU from KIST and propose a time delay of arrival (TDOA)-based feature matrix with its algorithm based on the minimum sum of absolute errors (MSAE) for sound source localization. The TDOA-based feature matrix is defined as a simple database matrix calculated from pairs of microphones installed on a humanoid robot. The proposed method, using the TDOA-based feature matrix and its algorithm based on MSAE, effortlessly localizes a sound source without any requirement for calculating approximate nonlinear equations. To verify the solid performance of our speaker localization system for a humanoid robot, we present various experimental results for the speech sources at all directions within 5 m distance and the height divided into three parts.

Intelligent walking modeling of humanoid robot using learning based neuro-fuzzy system is presented in this paper. Walking pattern, trajectory of the zero moment point (ZMP) in a humanoid robot is used as an important criterion for the balance of the walking robots but its complex dynamics makes robot control difficult. In addition, it is difficult to generate stable and natural walking motion for a robot. To handle these difficulties and explain empirical laws of the humanoid robot, we are modeling practical humanoid robot using neuro-fuzzy system based on the two types of natural motions which are walking trajectories on a t1at floor and on an ascent. Learning based neuro-fuzzy system employed has good learning capability and computational performance. The results from neuro-fuzzy system are compared with previous approach.

Embedded device that can support mobile computing environment has been popular recently. In this study, we propose a new robot application based on embedded device to control a mobile robot using a touch-based remote interface with information display of robot trajectory and sensors. We developed the robot application using Microsoft's.Net Compact Framework and Zigbee data communication with Windows CE kernel based embedded device. In experiment, we evaluated the feasibility and the effectiveness of the proposed system by showing a remote robot control using touch interface and a information display of the robot.
