  • The objective of this paper is to study two dimensional steady gravitational waves on the interface between two immiscible, inviscid and incompressible fluids bounded above by a horizontal rigid boundary and below by a rigid step. A KdV equation for the first order perturbation in an asymptotic expansion can appear. However the coefficient of the KdV theory fails in that case. By a unified asymptotic method, we overcome this difficulty and derive a modified KdV equation with forcing. We find homogeneous steady solutions and present numerical solutions.

  • This paper studies the forced vibration of the hydro-elastic system consisting of the anisotropic (orthotropic) plate, compressible viscous fluid and rigid wall within the scope of the exact equations and relations of elastodynamics for anisotropic bodies for describing of the plate motion, and with utilizing the linearized exact Navier-Stokes equations for describing of the fluid flow. For solution of the corresponding boundary value problem it is employed time-harmonic presentation of the sought values with respect to time and the Fourier transform with respect to the space coordinate on the coordinate axis directed along the plate length. Numerical results on the pressure acting on the interface plane between the plate and fluid are presented and discussed. The main aim in this discussion is focused on the study of the influence of the plate material anisotropy on the frequency response of the mentioned pressure. In particular, it is established that under fixed values of the shear modulus of the plate material a decrease in the values of the modulus of elasticity of the plate material in the direction of plate length causes to increase of the absolute values of the interface pressure. The numerical results are presented not only for the viscous fluid case but also for the inviscid fluid case.

  • This paper proposes a modified matched interface and boundary (MMIB) method to analyze the free vibration of beams with various interfaces caused by steps, intermediate rigid and elastic supports, intermediate concentrated masses and spring-mass systems, etc. A new strategy is developed to determine the parameters in the iterative computation of MMIB. The MMIB procedures are established to deal with boundary conditions and various interface conditions, which overcomes the shortcoming of the traditional MIB. A number of examples are utilized to illustrate the performance of MMIB method. Numerical results indicate that the MMIB method is a highly accurate and convergent approach for solving interface problems.

  • As shear occurs along a soil-structure interface, a localized zone with a thickness of several grain diameters will develop in soil along the interface, forming an interfacial layer. In this paper, the behaviour of a soil-structure interface is studied numerically by modelling the plane shear of a granular layer bounded by rigid plates. The mechanical behaviour of the granular material is described with a micro-polar hypoplastic continuum model. Numerical results are presented to show the development of shear localization along the interface for shearing under conditions of constant normal pressure and constant volume, respectively. Evolution of the resistance on the surface of the bounding plate is considered with respect to the influences of grain rotation.

  • This paper presents an analysis of thermal stress induced along the interface between a polymeric coating layer and a steel substrate as a result of uniform temperature change. The epoxy layer is assumed to be a linear viscoelastic material and to be theromorheologically simple. The viscoelastic boundary element method is employed to investigate the behavior of interface stresses. The numerical results exhibit relaxation of interface stresses and large stress gradients, which are observed in the vicinity of the free surface. Since the exceedingly large stresses cannot be borne by the polymeric coating layer, local cracking or delamination can occur at the interface corner.

  • The least-squares formulation for rigid-plasticity based on J$_2$-flow rule and infinitesimal theory and its meshfree implementation using moving least-squares approximation are proposed. In the least-squares formulation the squared residuals of the constitutive and equilibrium equations are minimized. Those residuals are represented in a form of first-order differential system using the velocity and stress components as independent variables. For the enforcement of the boundary and frictional contact conditions, penalty scheme is employed. Also the reshaping of nodal supports is introduced to avoid the difficulties due to the severe local deformation near the contact interface. The proposed least-squares meshfree method does not require any structure of extrinsic cells during the whole process of analysis. Through some numerical examples of metal forming processes, the validity and effectiveness of the method are investigated.

  • In this paper a local remeshing technique assisted by user-interface capabiities is presented for precise forging simulation. The rigid-plastic finite element formulation is introduced and the basic approach to the new local remeshing technique is presented. A piercing process in cold forging is simulated by the presented technique and the results are compared in detail.

  • The objective of this paper is to study two dimensional waves on the interface between two immiscible, invicid and incompressible fluid bounded by two rigid varing boundaries when gravity and surface tension appear. By using unfied asymptotic method, a K-dV equation with higher order terms from which many model equations for the fluid domain can be obtained, is derived.

  • The characteristics of thermal instabilities of natural convection in a horizontal fluid layer bounded below by a rigid plate and above by an interface with a passive gas is presented. The critical Grashof number decreases as the surface tension gradient effect (Marangoni effect) at the interface increases and the flow remains unstable for a critical Marangoni number depending on Prandtl numbers. These results are in substantial agreement with those of Smith and Davis.
