  • Corresponding to the rapid growth of the aging population without an adequate social safety net for the elderly, older people face great disadvantages due to sudden illness or poor health and a lack of support from the younger generation. Furthermore, older women are suffering from a drastic deterioration of their economic status because of insufficient retirement savings. Examining the impact of labor force participation and living arrangement on health status and life satisfaction in later life, it is important to consider gender differences in context of social policies for the elderly. Using data based on a stratified national sample of the elderly by the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA), multiple regression model were used to estimate the relationships between labor force participation and health status and subjective life satisfaction concerning the quality of their later life. The result indicates that good health status and high level of life satisfaction are associated with the type of paid work status for the elderly men, but those are associated with the type of non paid work, such as family businesses employees for the elderly women. Significant differences in chronic health condition and subjective life satisfaction by employment characteristics are found among the elderly. In addition, older women's high level of life satisfaction was associated with the participation of the social activity. The major conclusion from these results should help us understand gender differences in the elderly and acknowledge further exploration of gender variations in these people's later life.

This study utilized the secondary data of 2 waves(2005-2011) of a Korean Retirement and Income Study from the National Pension Research Institute. This study categorized living arrangement transition over time into 16 categories and used generalized the estimation equation(GEE) modeling to examine the relationship between living arrangement transition group membership and life satisfaction. The results showed that transition in living arrangement in old age was partly and significantly associated with life satisfaction in later life. In particular, the best living arrangement type in older adults in terms of life satisfaction was the coresidence with spouse compared with residence alone or residence with their children. The group of residence with their children was not related to higer satisfaction. More research is needed to explore the mechanism behind older people's trajectory in transition in living arrangement.

The major findings were as follows: First, after controlling for gender, age, region, housing tenure, and personal income, the social capital of the retirees, including cognitive social capital(trust and reciprocity) and structural social capital(emotional and economic familial support, and a well-developed social network), contributes to increases in their economic well-being. Second, the degree of effect social capital has on well-being varied by gender and age; the effect was also different according to gender, regardless of the person's age. These empirical results provide a basis for the institution of policies that help bolster economic wellbeing for retirees by creating conditions that increase social capital in this group.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of city dwellers' migration to the rural areas on the increase of their life satisfaction and its influencing variables. Using a quota sampling, 500 city dwellers across the country and 180 migrators to the Goesan Gun in the Chungcheongbuk-do were selected. The results showed that (a) most city dwellers want to move to the rural areas for their relaxation and rest for their retirement, but migrants' main goal is to realize their internally oriented values, (b) life satisfaction is more evident for migrants compared to city dwellers, and it is influenced by self-assessed income, self-perceived health and internally oriented value, and (c) migrators contribute to their own successful aging by using strategies of selection, optimization and compensation compared to city dwellers. The contribution of this paper is to identify and confirm that (a) migration to the rural areas is an effective way to increase individual's life satisfaction although goals of dwellers and migrators are different, (b) the specific influencing variable and their weights in increase of life satisfaction are unique in Korea, and (c) income level is a not sufficient condition but necessary condition. Several managerial implications and policy directions were suggested to help both migrators and potential migrators to settle successfully in the rural areas.
