One of the significant issues in cluster analysis is to identify a proper number of clusters hidden under given data. In this paper we propose a novel approach to systematically determine the number of clusters based on Input Representation Coverage (IRC), which is newly defined as a quantified value of how well original input data in Gaussian feature space can be captured with a certain number of clusters. Furthermore, its usability and applicability is also investigated via experiments with synthetic data. Our experiment results show that the proposed approach is quite useful in approximately finding the real number of clusters implicitly contained in the data.
In this paper we emphasize the introduction of ‘incommensurability’ on the teaching and learning the irrational number because we think of the origin of number as ‘ratio’. According to Greek classification of continuity as a ‘never ending’ divisibility, discrete number and continuous magnitude belong to another classes. That is, those components were dealt with respectively in category of arithmetic and that of geometry. But the comparison between magnitudes in terms of their ratios took the opportunity to relate ratios of magnitudes with numerical ratios. And at last Stevin coped with discrete and continuous quantity at the same time, using his instrumental decimal notation. We pay attention to the fact that Stevin constructed his number conception in reflecting the practice of measurement : He substituted ‘subdivision of units’ for ‘divisibility of quantities’. Number was the result of such a reflective abstraction. In other words, number was invented by regulation of measurement. Therefore, we suggest decimal representation from the point of measurement, considering the foregoing historical development of number. From the perspective that the conception of real number originated from measurement of ‘continuum’ and infinite decimals played a significant role in the ‘representation’ of measurement, decimal expression of real number should be introduced through contexts of measurement instead of being introduced as a result of algorithm.

A 3D model based approach for a face representation and recognition algorithm has been investigated as a robust solution for pose and illumination variation. Since a generative 3D face model consists of a large number of vertices, a 3D model based face recognition system is generally inefficient in computation time and complexity. In this paper, we propose a novel 3D face representation algorithm based on a pixel to vertex map (PVM) to optimize the number of vertices. We explore shape and texture coefficient vectors of the 3D model by fitting it to an input face using inverse compositional image alignment (ICIA) to evaluate face recognition performance. Experimental results show that the proposed face representation and recognition algorithm is efficient in computation time while maintaining reasonable accuracy.
This study investigates pre-service teacher's understanding of the concept and representations of irrational numbers. We classified the representations of irrational numbers into six categories; non-fraction, decimal, symbolic, geometric, point on a number line, approximation representation. The results of this study are as follows. First, pre-service teachers couldn't relate non-fractional definition and incommensurability of irrational numbers. Secondly, we observed the centralization tendency on symbolic representation and the little attention to other representations. Thirdly, pre-service teachers had more difficulty moving between symbolic representation and point on a number line representation of ${\pi}$ than that of $\sqrt{5}$ We suggested the concept of irrational numbers should be learned in relation to various representations of irrational numbers.

Recently, mathematics education have been emphasized on developing students' mathematical thinking and problem solving abilities. Accordance with this emphasis, dramatical changes are needed in learning mathematics not merely let alone students solve real-made mathematics problems. The project learning to explore a counterweight activity will have an effects on positive mathematical attitude(to pose problem, to have curiosity) and mathematical thinking(power 10-digit representation, 2-digit number, two representation of 3-digit number, connect exponential number and log situation) which could develop understanding problems and critical thinking.

An approximate representation of discrete functions {f$_{i,j}\mid$|i, j=-1, 0, 1, …, N+1}in two variables by a fuzzy system is described. We use the cubic B-splines as fuzzy sets for the input fuzzification and spike functions as the output fuzzy sets. The ordinal number of f$_{i,j}$ in the sorted list is taken to be the out put fuzzy set number in the (i, j) th entry of the fuzzy rule table. We show that the fuzzy system is an exact representation of the cubic spline function s(x, y)=$\sum_{N+1}^{{i,j}=-1}f_{i,j}B_i(x)B_j(y)$ and that the approximation error S(x, y)-f(x, y) is surprisingly O($h^2$) when f(x, y) is three times continuously differentiable. We prove that when f(x, y) is a gray scale image, then the fuzzy system is a smoothed representation of the image and the original image can be recovered exactly from its fuzzy system representation when it is a digitized image.e.
This paper describes a low-power design of decimation filter. To reduce power consumption, an approximate processing method which controls the error in canonic signed digit(CSD) coefficients is proposed. The CSD representation reduces the number of operations by representing multiplications with add and shift operations. The proposed method further reduces the number of operations by controlling the error of CSD coefficient. Processor type architecture is used to implement the proposed method. Simulation result shows that the number of operations is reduced to 56%, 35% and 10% at each approximated filter level.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of number representation activities using computer software on young children's ability in mathematics. The effect of the number representation activities using computer software will be shown differently according to the age. The effect of the number representation activities using computer software will be shown differently according to the genders. The result of this study has shown that it gives a positive influence to the young children's mathematical ability.
To the best of our knowledge, there is no method, in the literature, to find the fuzzy optimal solution of fully fuzzy shortest path (FFSP) problems i.e., shortest path (SP) problems in which all the parameters are represented by fuzzy numbers. In this paper, a new method is proposed to find the fuzzy optimal solution of FFSP problems. Kumar and Kaur [Methods for solving unbalanced fuzzy transportation problems, Operational Research-An International Journal, 2010 (DOI 10.1007/s 12351-010-0101-3)] proposed a new method with new representation, named as JMD representation, of trapezoidal fuzzy numbers for solving fully fuzzy transportation problems and shown that it is better to solve fully fuzzy transportation problems by using proposed method with JMD representation as compare to proposed method with the existing representation. On the same direction in this paper a new method is proposed to find the solution of FFSP problems and it is shown that it is also better to solve FFSP problems with JMD representation as compare to existing representation. To show the advantages of proposed method with this representation over proposed method with other existing representations. A FFSP problem solved by using proposed method with JMD representation as well as proposed method with other existing representations and the obtained results are compared.
Soft sets are fantastic mathematical tools to handle imprecise and uncertain information in complicated situations. In this paper, we defined the hybrid structure which is the combination of soft set and complex number representation of intuitionistic fuzzy set. We defined basic set theoretic operations such as complement, union, intersection, restricted union, restricted intersection etc. for this hybrid structure. Moreover, we developed this theory to establish some more set theoretic operations like Disjunctive sum, difference, product, conjugate etc.
