  • This study examines the material characteristics of fibers and their influences on reinforced concrete through the tests of reinforced concrete by the types of fibers including non-reinforced, steel, polypropylene and cellulose fibers and the test of compressive strength and reinforced concrete beam without shear reinforcement and consequently it obtains the following conclusions. As a result of conducting compressive strength by the types of specimens, fiber reinforced specimen with the highest compressive strength value at 28 days of age was cellulose fiber reinforced specimen as 280.4kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and steel fiber specimen had the highest compressive strength of 250.7kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 180 days of age. In case of non-reinforced specimen, its compressive strength was 277.4kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 28 days of age and 273.1kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 180 days of age. Comparing the compressive strength of non-reinforced specimen to that fiber reinforced specimen showed that the compressive strength of fiber reinforced specimen was lower in the passage of age and the results of this experiment showed no effects of fiber reinforcement. As a result of testing reinforced concrete beam without shear reinforcement, ductility factors of specimens were 4.67 for non-reinforced specimen, 8.18 for steel fiber reinforced specimen, 6.20 for polypropylene fiber reinforced specimen and 5.49 for cellulose reinforced specimen, and it is found that steel fiber reinforced specimen was highest. When non-reinforced specimen and steel fiber reinforced specimen were compared, steel fiber reinforced specimen had higher ductility factor of about 75.2% than that of non-reinforced specimen.

  • To evaluate the shear performance of the textile glass fiber and the sheet glass fiber reinforced glulam bolted connections, a tension type shear test was conducted. The average yield shear strength of the bolted connection of reinforced glulam was increased by 12% ~ 31% compared to the non-reinforced glulam. It was confirmed that the shear performance of 5D end distance of the glass fiber reinforced glulam connection corresponds to that of 7D of the non-reinforced glulam connection proposed in building design requirements in various countries. Compared to the non-reinforced glulam, the average shear strength of textile glass fiber reinforced glulam was markedly increased. The non-reinforced glulam and the GFRP reinforced glulam underwent a momentary splitting fracture. However, the failure mode of textile glass fiber reinforced glulam showed a good ductility.

  • A new composite reinforced method, namely self-compacting concrete filled circular CFRP-steel jacketing, was proposed in this paper. Experimental tests on eight RC square short columns reinforced with the new composite reinforced method and four RC square short columns reinforced with CFS jackets were conducted to investigate their eccentrically compressive behaviour. Nine reinforced columns were subjected to eccentrically compressive loading, while three reinforced columns were subjected to axial compressive loading as reference. The parameters investigated herein were the eccentricity of the compressive loading and the layer of CFRP. Subsequently, the failure mode, ultimate load, deformation and strain of these reinforced columns were discussed. Their failure modes included the excessive bending deformation, serious buckling of steel jackets, crush of concrete and fracture of CFRP. Moreover, these reinforced columns exhibited a ductile failure globally. Both the eccentricity of the compressive loading and the layer of CFRP had a significant effect on the eccentrically compressive behaviour of reinforced columns. Finally, formulae for the evaluation of the ultimate load of reinforced columns were proposed. The theoretical formulae based on the ultimate equilibrium theory provided an effective, acceptable and safe method for designers to calculate the ultimate load of reinforced columns under eccentrically compressive loading.

  • To evaluate the bonding performance of reinforced glulam, the textile type of glass fiber and aramid fiber, and the sheet type of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) and carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) were used as reinforcements. The reinforced glulam was manufactured by inserting reinforcement between the outmost and middle lamination of 5ply glulam. The types of adhesives used in this study were polyvinyl acetate resins (MPU500H, and MPU600H), polyurethane resin and resorcinol resin. The block shear strengths of the textile type in glass fiber reinforced glulam using MPU500H and resorcinol resin were higher than 7.1 N/$mm^2$, and these glulams passed the wood failure requirement of Korean standards (KS). In case of the sheet types, GFRP reinforced glulams using MPU500H, polyurethane resin and resorcinol resin, and CFRP reinforced glulams using MPU500H and polyurethane resin passed the requirement of KS. The textile type of glass fiber reinforced glulam using resorcinol resin after water and boiling water soaking passed the delamination requirement of KS. The only GFRP reinforced glulam using MPU500H after water soaking passed the delamination requirement of KS. We conclude that the bonding properties of adhesive according to reinforcements are one of the prime factors to determine the bonding performance of the reinforced glulam.

  • Concrete beams reinforced with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) bars exhibit large deflection and crack width as compared to concrete beams reinforced steel due to modulus of elasticity of FRP bars. Current design code for prediction and crack width developed in concrete structures reinforced with steel bars may not be used for concrete beams reinforced with FRP bars. Thus a number of researcher have attempted to propose modifications to the ACI 318 empirical equation for estimating the effective moment of inertia of reinforced concrete beams. Others used numerical method to calculate the deflection. The purpose of this paper is to evaluation of methods of ACI 440.1 R-01, ISIS Canada design manual, and others for predicting deflection for glass fiber reinforced polymer reinforced concrete beams.

  • In this thesis, the fatigue tests were performed on a series of reinforced concrete to Investigate the variation of strength and the safety of reinforced concrete structures under fatigue load. The specimens were of the same rectangular cross-section, of effective height 24cm and width 30cm and their span was 330cm. The three point loading system is used in the fatigue tests. In these tests, the fracture mode of reinforced concrete structures under fatigue load, relationship between the repeated loading cycles and the mid-span displacement of the specimens were observed. According to the test results, the following fatigue behavior of reinforced concrete specimens were observed. By increasing of the number of repeated loading cycles, the mid-span displacement became greater, however the Incremental amounts of the displacement were reduced. It could be also known that the inelastic strain energy of the doubly reinforced rectangular beams was larger than that of the singly reinforced rectangular beams as increasing the number of repeated loading cycles. Compliance of reinforced concrete structures tended to be reduced as increasing the repeated loading cycles, and the compliance of the doubly reinforced rectangular beams was generally smaller than that of the singly reinforced rectangular beams. Based on the above investigation, it could be concluded that the doubly reinforced rectangular beams under fatigue load were more efficient to resist the brittle fracture than the singly reinforced rectangular beams.

  • To calculate the shear capacity of concrete beams reinforced with fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP), current shear design provisions use slightly modified versions of existing semi-empirical shear design equations that were primarily derived from experimental data generated on concrete beams having steel reinforcement. However, FRP materials have different mechanical properties and mode of failure than steel, and extending existing shear design equations for steel reinforced beams to cover concrete beams reinforced with FRP is questionable. This paper investigates the feasibility of using artificial neural networks (ANNs) to estimate the nominal shear capacity, Vn of concrete beams reinforced with FRP bars. Experimental data on 150 FRP-reinforced beams were retrieved from published literature. The resulting database was used to evaluate the validity of several existing shear design methods for FRP reinforced beams, namely the ACI 440-03, CSA S806-02, JSCE-97, and ISIS Canada-01. The database was also used to develop an ANN model to predict the shear capacity of FRP reinforced concrete beams. Results show that current guidelines are either inadequate or very conservative in estimating the shear strength of FRP reinforced concrete beams. Based on ANN predictions, modified equations are proposed for the shear design of FRP reinforced concrete beams and proved to be more accurate than existing equations.

  • The Purpose of this study is to offer an appropriate and reliable safety evaluation method the reinforced concrete members like as reinforced concrete deep beams and reinforced concrete columns, etc. A nonlinear finite element analysis program named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology) was used to evaluate the ultimate strength analytically for the reinforced concrete members that have complicated mechanical behaviors. The nonlinear material model for the reinforced concrete is composed of models for characterizing the behavior of the concrete, in addition to a model for characterizing the reinforcing bars. The proposed numerical method for the safety evaluation of reinforced concrete bridge structures that is consisted of reinforced concrete member is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

  • The application of the reinforced retaining wall has increased in the last 10 years in Korea. The height of reinforced wall is generally limited to less than 15m. It has been reported that the reinforced wall higher than 10m should have higher strength reinforcement or should reduce the lateral earth pressure of the reinforced wall to secure the stability of the wall. In this study, the reinforced retaining wall was constructed 14m high, backfilled by a mixture of soil and cement and instrumented on the reinforcement elements. The instrumented reinforced wall was monitored during and after construction. Field monitoring result shows that a backfill by a mixture of soil and cement reduced the tensile stress developed on the reinforcing elements and the reinforced wall backfilled by a mixture of soil and cement performed successful.

  • A fatigue test on the steel welded L-shaped frame was conducted. The frame was consisted with carbon steel tube and reinforced bracket. The four type reinforced brackets were fabricated. They were two rectangular plate reinforced bracket, two sided pentagon plate reinforced bracket, triangular plate reinforced bracket and fully reinforced bracket. The fatigue test of frame was conducted with axial tension loading. The fatigue simulation of the steel welded L-shaped frame was also performed by the finite element method with code FEMFAT. The frame of fully reinforced bracket had the highest fatigue life and reinforced quality factor.
