This study describes the time domain imaging algorithm which can be well applied to short-range UWB(ultra wideband) bistatic radar. In the imaging method of SAR technology, the frequency domain method is well applied to the areas which satisfy far-field condition. However in the near-field environment, the image quality is not good due to phase error. However back-projection method based on time domain is well applied to short-range imaging radar. Meanwhile because its processing time is very long, real time-processing is very difficult. To resolve this problem FFBP(Fast Factorized Back-Projection) was proposed. Using the raw data gathered on field we implemented back-projection and FFBP method. Then image quality and processing time were analyzed using these methods.
This paper reviewed application of data-driven method, distance-weighted method(IDWM, IEWM, CCWM, ANN), and radar data method estimated of missing raifall data. To evaluate these methods, statistics was compared using radar and station rainfall data from Imjin-river basin. The range of RMSE values calculated for CCWM, ANN was 1.4 to 1.79mm, and the range of RMSE values estimated data used for radar rainfall data was 0.05 to 2.26mm. Spatial characteristics is considered to Radar rainfall data rather than station rainfall data. Result suggest that estimated data used for radar data can impove estimation of missing raifall data.

Recent advance in low cost and light-weight drones has extended their application areas in both military and private sectors. Accordingly surveillance program against unfriendly drones has become an important issue. Drone detection and classification technique has long been emphasized in order to prevent attacks or accidents by commercial drones in urban areas. Most commercial drones have small sizes and low reflection and hence typical sensors that use acoustic, infrared, or radar signals exhibit limited performances. Recently, artificial intelligence algorithm has been actively exploited to enhance radar image identification performance. In this paper, we adopt machined learning algorithm for high resolution radar imaging in drone detection and classification applications. For this purpose, simulation is carried out against commercial drone models and compared with experimental data obtained through high resolution radar field test.
This study estimated the error involved in the areal average rainfall derived from incomplete radar information due to radar partial coverage of a basin or sub-basin. This study considers the Han-River Basin as an application example for the rainfall observation using the Ganghwa rain radar. Among the total of 20 mid-sized sub-basins of the Han-River Basin evaluated in this study, only five sub-basins are fully covered by the radar and three are totally uncovered. Remaining 12 sub-basins are partially covered by the radar to result in incomplete radar information available. When only partial radar information is available, the sampling error decreases proportional to the size of the radar coverage, which also varies depending on the number of clusters. Conditioned that the total area coverage remains the same, the sampling error decreases as the number of clusters increases. This study estimated the sampling error of the areal average rainfall of partially-covered mid-sized sub-basins of the Han- River Basin, and the results show that the sampling error could be at least several % to maximum tens % depending on the relative coverage area.
This study investigated the application of the successive correction method(SCM), a simple data assimilation method, for synthesizing the radar and rain gauge data. First, the number of iteration and influence radius for the SCM application were decided based on their sensitivity analysis. Also, for the evaluation of synthetic rainfall, the distributed rainfall field using the dense rainfall gauge network was assumed to be the true one. The synthetic rainfall field based on the SCM was also compared quantitatively with the one based on the co-Kriging frequently used nowadays. As the results, the SCM, a simple and economical data assimilation method, was found to secure the accuracy and statistical characteristics of the co-Kriging application.
Existing environmental spatial information, which has been concentrated on spatial resolution, has limitations in solving realistic environmental problems that must be accompanied by physical and chemical characterization. Accordingly, there is a need for an image radar capable of identifying physical characteristics of an object regardless of weather conditions, day and night, and sunlight. Image radar is used in various fields in the United States and Europe. The next generation of medium-sized satellite No. 5 in Korea, which is under development with the aim of monitoring water disasters, is also looking for ways to expand the scope to various applications based on the existing application range. To this end, we analyzed domestic and international papers (100 works) using image radar, and reviewed KEI 2016 report, domestic papers, and foreign papers. Based on this, various environmental issues were summarized and the effects of when the image radar was used were analyzed and land cover was selected as an environmental issue. In the future, we will embody the technology to improve the accuracy of the land cover map, which is the environmental issue selected in this study, and build the foundation system for the stable use of the land cover map.
An investigation of a void and a loose layer of the ground is essential in order to prevent the losses of life and properties caused by subsidence and sinkage of the ground. Recently, studies on the ground penetrating radar survey have been actively conducted in order to estimate the void and the loose layer of the ground. However, an error can be committed by contrarily predicting a dense ground and a loose layer because the ground penetrating radar estimates an interface depth between geo-materials that have different electrical impedances. In this study, a loose ground depth is estimated using the characteristics of the reflected electromagnetic wave obtained from the ground penetrating radar survey. To gather the signals according to the loose ground depths, the ground penetrating radar survey is conducted on a field which underwent a huge ground settlement. In addition, the dynamic cone penetration test is performed to verify the result of the loose ground depth estimation from the ground penetrating radar survey. From the analysis of the reflection characteristics of the electromagnetic wave, a phase of an electromagnetic wave reflected from a denser soil layer is found to be identical with that of the first measured signal. On the other hand, a phase of an electromagnetic wave reflected from the loose soil layer is found to be opposed to that of the first detected signal. The comparison between the dynamic cone penetration index and electromagnetic signals by the ground penetrating radar shows that the estimated depth of the loose or dense layer is perfectly matched with a high reliability. The ground penetrating radar survey and the signal analysis performed in this study can be used not only for the survey of interface depth between the discontinuity layers but also for the estimation of the loose layer.
Recently, a multi-mode radar system was designed for efficient operation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in various environments, which has the advantage of being able to integrate and utilize methods of the pulse Doppler (PD) radar and the frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar. For the range detection part of the multi-mode radar signal processor (RSP), the hardware structure using the FFT processor and the IFFT processor is required to be designed in a way that improves efficiency on the area side. In addition, given the radar application environment that requires a variety of distance resolutions, FFT processors need to support variable-length operations. In this paper, the FFT processor and IFFT processor in multi-mode RSP range estimation are designed and proposed as hardware for a single FFT processor that supports variable length operation of 16-1024 points. The proposed FFT processor designed in hardware description language (HDL) and can be implemented with 7,452 logic elements and 5,116 registers.
Due to the nature of weather radar, blank areas occur due to impediments to observation, such as the ground clutter. Radar beam blockages have resulted in the underestimation rainfall amounts. To overcome these limitations, this study developed the Hybrid Scan Reflectivity (HSR) technique and compared the HSR results with existing methods. As a result, the HSR technique was able to estimate rainfalls in areas from which no reflectivity information was observable using existing methods. In case of estimating rainfalls depending on reflectivity scan techniques and beam-blockage/non beam-blockage, the HSR accuracy is superior. Furthermore, rainfall amounts derived from each method was inputted to the HEC-HMS to examine the accuracy of the flood simulations. The accuracy of the results using the HSR technique in contrast to the RAR calculation system and M-P relation was improved by 7% and 10%(based on correlation coefficients), and 18% and 34%(based on Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency), on average, respectively. Therefore, it is advised that the HSR technique be utilized in the hydrology field to estimate flood discharge more accurately.
