  • Purpose: This study was to determine the current trend of nursing research as exploring both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, and to provide the explicit direction to improve the quality of published papers. Methods: Total of 366 articles published between 2004 and 2006 was reviewed using the criteria of analysis. Results: There was more number of quantitative studies than qualitative studies. More studies were conducted with subjects who had health problems, and studies that targeted women and elderly population have been significantly increased. In quantitative methodology, utilization of experimental and quasi-experimental designs has been increased, however descriptive study was dominant as yet. In qualitative methodology, studies using grounded theory and phenomenology were frequently published. It was noted that theoretical framework and rational for sample size were rarely presented in quantitative study. Philosophical position and the process of preparation for study, which guided the research, were not clearly described in qualitative study. Conclusion: The findings of this review suggest that published studies have been improved and diversified, however, detailed and clear evaluation tool that assesses study process and method should be developed as a way to further improve the quality of published papers.

  • Risk elements of highway safety facilities are affected by complex environments. Thus, risk-based approach for traffic safety facilities is needed. For this, in this study, qualitative and quantitative risk assessment methodology and procedure for highway safety facilities is proposed, which can be used as risk-based approach incorporating VE process. Also, for the quantitative risk assessment, event tree using EPDO(Equivalent Property Damage Only) with respect to frequency and magnitude of risk events is introduced. As a result, risk index of alternative 1(140cm) and 2(127(cm) which can be used as performance factor in VE approach are estimated.

  • The purpose of this research is to study the meanings and characteristics of qualitative research method in LIS. As the philosophy and epistemology of qualitative research are widely different from those of quantitative research, the meaning of validity and reliability must be interpreted in its ow9 structure and dimension. Essentially qualitative researchers seek to understand and interpret the world of others from their own viewpoints which basically tend to be subjective. Accordingly, qualitative researchers‘ understandings and interpretations are met with readers' subjectivity. By carefully analyzing the nature of qualitative research in LIS, I tried to point out some problems in terms of validity and reliability and practical strategies. Six problems issued in the qualitative research method are presented.

  • The current study was conducted to investigate the effect of early feed restriction (FR, 8 to 14 d of age) on growth performance and immune function in broiler chickens. Birds were fed corresponding diets from 3 to 35 d of age, which consisted of three phases: starter (3 to 7 d of age), FR (8 to 14 d of age) and re-alimentation (15 to 35 d of age) phases. During the FR period, each group of birds was fed the basal diet ad libitum (CON), 85% (EN85) and 70% (EN70) of lower calorie diet ad libitum (qualitative FR), and 85% (FI85) and 70% (FI70) of voluntary intake on a daily basis (quantitative FR). As a result, there was no statistical difference in weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio between the CON and quantitative or qualitative FR groups during the entire (3 to 35 d) periods. In particular, the EN85 group resulted in a significant (p<0.05) increase in weight gain compared with the EN70, FI85 and FI70 groups. Plasma total protein and albumin at 14 d of age (during FR) were significantly (p<0.05) lower in the quantitative and qualitative FR groups, but these parameters at 35 d of age (after re-alimentation) were higher (p<0.05) in the EN85 and EN70 groups than in the CON group. Plasma IgG level was unaffected by dietary FR procedure. In cytokines, there was no significant difference in the expression of lymphocytic IL-4 and IFN-${\gamma}$ at 14 d of age between the FR and the CON groups, whereas lymphocytic IL-6 and iNOS expression were significantly (p<0.05) lower in FI85 and FI70 groups. Moreover, lymphocytic iNOS was also significantly (p<0.05) lower in birds fed qualitative and quantitative diets compared with those fed ad libitum. In the thymus, IL-4 expression was higher (p<0.05) in FI85 and FI70 groups, whereas IL-6 expression was lower (p<0.05) in the FI85 and FI70 groups than in the CON group. Thymic iNOS was significantly (p<0.05) lower in birds fed qualitatively and quantitatively restricted diets compared with those fed ad libitum. At 35 d of age, there was no difference in the expression of IL-4, IL-6 and IFN-${\gamma}$ of lymphocytes and thymus between the FR and CON groups. In conclusion, 85% of quantitative and qualitative FR would have a beneficial effect on the expression of some cytokines including IL-4 and iNOS without change in growth performance of birds.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a behaviorally anchored rating scale for peer evaluation in group projects based on social interdependence theory. A mixed method involving a qualitative and quantitative approach was used in this study. In the qualitative study, both the individual and group interviews were conducted to college students regarding their cooperative learning experiences. Data from this qualitative research was analyzed based on 5 elements of cooperative learning and 'critical incidents' were extracted from students' own voices that would serve as specific rating criteria in the scale. Once the 'critical incidents' have been incorporated into the scale, validation from 3 independent experts was conducted. In the quantitative study, correlations with relevant variables were analyzed to examine the criteria-referenced validity. Findings suggest that the behaviorally anchored rating scale for peer evaluation in group projects can be used in various team-based learning contexts.

  • This study aims to find out and measure the level of factors affecting the applicability of environmental management accounting (EMA) in Vietnamese automobile industry enterprises. Data was collected using both quantitative and qualitative methods. First, in general research, qualitative methodology was used to find out factors (variables) that can impact the possibility of implementing EMA in Vietnamese automobile enterprises. Second, in detailed research, all variables are measured using a quantitative method by collecting data through sampling and sending questionnaires. 500 questionnaires were sent to automobile enterprise managers and only 352 questionnaires met the criteria for the data analysis. The study used a mixed research design approach- a procedure for collecting, analyzing, and "mixing" both quantitative and qualitative research and methods in a single study to understand the research problem. Results show that 7 factors affect the possibility of implementing EMA in Vietnamese automobile industry enterprises. These factors are coercive pressure, normative pressure, mimetic pressure, business environmental uncertainty, environmental strategy, benefits when applying EMA, and task complexity. Based on the results of the study, promoting EMA in the automotive industry should depend mainly on the role of governmental departments.

  • Qualitative models in model-based expert system needs modeling paradigm which provides intelligent control of modeling assumptions and extracts robust inferences without quantitative information about the system to be modeled. Qualitative reasoning methodologies has proved the property of the completeness but not the soundness to the corresponding quantitative model. We propose new methodology of qualitative reasoning by introducing the concept of Centroid-Oriented Composite Interval to improve the soundness problem. Arithmetic operations and equivalence classes were composed using this definition. Qualitative simulation results were compared to Kuipers's results and the improvements in the soundness problem is verified.

  • Most of the photoperiodic responses result in a sharp contrast between development in long and short days, so that qualitative observations are quite sufficient to establish that development is under photoperiodic control, and qualitative information of this type is all that is available for many of the responses (Dring 1984). However, we need to devise some quantitative measurement of the response in order to study the physiological mechanism of photoperiodic control. We report here the quantification of photoperiodic control of erect thalli production of Sargassum muticum in different daylength regimes. (omitted)

  • This study tried to find the effect to the representation patterns of science concepts upon the momentum effect. The previous studies showed that the momentum effect is influenced by students' cognitive levels and the abstractness of test items. The representation patterns of science concepts are divided into 4 different types: quantitative and qualitative, verbal and image. The research method used in this study is time series design. The period is 50 days. The period is divided into "pre-lest", "intervention-test", "post-test". Pre-test period is 5 days and in this period class instruction does not exist. Intervention-lest period is 30 days and in this period class instruction exist. Post-test period is 15 days and in this period class instruction does not exist. The results showed longer momentum effect on the image-qualitative representation pattern than the other representation patterns. Qualitative concepts is formed better than quantitative. Momentum effects is not artifact but the essential characteristics of science study.
