  • $Gd_2O_3$:Eu phosphor particles were prepared by largescale ultrasonic spray pyrolysis process. The morphological control of $Gd_2O_3$:Eu particles in spray pyrolysis was performed by adding polymeric precursors into spray solution containing nitrate salts. The effect of composition and amount of polymeric precursors on the morphology, crystallinity, and photoluminescence characteristics of $Gd_2O_3$:Eu particles was investigated. The influence of chain length of PEG on the morphology and photoluminescence intensity was investigated. $Gd_2O_3$:Eu particles prepared from aqueous solution containing no polymeric precursors had a hollow structure and rough surfaces after annealing process. The phosphor particles prepared from solution containing 0.1M CA and 0.lM PEG with high molecular weight as 1,500 had a spherical and filled morphology and the highest photoluminescence intensity, which was 48% higher than that of the $Y_2O_3$:Eu commercial product.

  • To achieve the clean and efficient utilization of low-rank coal, the combustion and pollutant emission characteristics of chars from low-temperature and fast pyrolysis in a horizontal tube furnace were investigated in a TG-MS analyzer. According to the results, the combustion characteristic of chars was poorer than its parent coals. The temperature range of gaseous product release had a good agreement with that of TGA weight loss. Gaseous products of samples with high content of volatile were released earlier. The NO and NO2 emissions of chars were lower than their parent coals. Coals of high rank (anthracite and sub-bituminous) released more NO and NO2 than low rank coals of lignite, so were chars from coals of different ranks. SO2 emissions of char samples were lower than parent coals and did not show obvious relationship with coal ranks.

  • A stainless steel autoclave reactor, which is the property of Pacific Northwest Laboratories(PNL) and located in PNL, was acted for pyrolysis and gasification of sawdust, ricestraw, and ricehusk. The initial reaction temperature of this reactor was 300$^{\circ}C$, and up to 500$^{\circ}C$ to complete pyrolysis and gasification reaction. The maximum exerted pressure on this reactor was 800 psig. In order to examine the effect of catalyst on reaction temperature, $K_2CO_3$, and nickel/alkali carbonate catalyst mixture were also used. The experimental results obtained with this reactor indicated that good yields of methane-rich gas(exceeding 40% methane) can be produced. The product gas mixtures were also identified to be CO. $CO_2$, $C_2H_4$, and $CH_3CHO$ etc. by Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometer.

  • Blue-emitting BAM:Eu phosphor powders were formed by post-treatment of precursor powders with hollow or dense morphologies. The morphologies of the precursor powders obtained by spray pyrolysis were controlled by changing the preparation conditions and by changing the type of spray solution. The effects of the morphologies of the precursor powders on the characteristics of the BAM : Eu phosphor powders reacted with $AlF_3$ flux were investigated. Precursor powders with a spherical shape and a hollow morphology produced BAM : Eu phosphor powders with a plate-like morphology, a fine size and a narrow size distribution. On the other hand, precursor powders with a spherical shape and dense morphology produced BAM : Eu phosphor powders with a plate-like morphology and a large size. $AlF_3$ flux improved the photoluminescence intensities of the BAM : Eu phosphor powders. The photoluminescence intensity of the fine-sized BAM : Eu phosphor powders with a plate-like morphology was 90% of the commercial product under vacuum ultraviolet conditions.

  • The modeling for fast pyrolysis of biomass in fluidized bed reactor has been developed for accurate prediction of bio-oil and gas products and for yield improvement. The purpose of this study is to analyze and to compare the CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation results with the experimental data from the CFD simulation results with the experimental data from the reference(Mellin et al., 2014) for gas products generated during fast pyrolysis of biomass in fluidized bed reactor. CFD(ANSYS FLUENT v.15.0) was used for the simulation. Complex pyrolysis reaction scheme of biomass subcomponents was applied for the simulation of pyrolysis reaction. This pyrolysis reaction scheme was included reaction of cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin in detail, gas products obtained from pyrolysis were mainly $CO_2$, CO, $CH_4$, $H_2$, $C_2H_4$. The deviation between the simulation results from this study and experimental data from the reference was calculated about 3.7%p, 4.6%p, 3.9%p for $CH_4$, $H_2$, $C_2H_4$ respectively, whereas 9.6%p and 6.7%p for $CO_2$ and CO which are relatively high. Through this study, it is possible to predict gas products accurately by using CFD simulation approach. Moreover, this modeling approach should be developed to predict fluidized bed reactor performance and other gas product yields.

  • The influence of tobacco additives on the composition of the combustion products in mainstream smoke is discussed. The effect of additives on the chemical composition of smoke have been further evaluated in order to discover additives that would alter the chemical composition of smoke. Tobacco was uniformly treated at a 1-5$\%$ level with 8 classes of additives. Group M treated with alkali metal salt and group S, F, O give lower tar, nicotine and CO values than the control. Group AN treated with natural antioxidant gives higher tar and CO values than the control. The increases are most probably due to the high transfer rate of the ingredients to smoke. M3 and P1 reduced above the $50\%$ of TSNA from the smoke. M4 and P1 reduced above the $50\%$ of HCN from the smoke. These results suggest that tobacco additives alter pyrolysis or combustion product distribution and provide fundamental data to lead the development of a RRP(reduced risk product).

  • Al-MCM-48 was used as a catalyst to decompose high density polyethylene(HDPE). Catalytic activity of Al-MCM-48 was compared with those of Al-MCM-41, Beta, and ZSM-5. Catalytic decomposition rate over Al-MCM-48 was much higher than at of non-catalytic pyrolysis only. Compared to other catalysts, Al-MCM-48 revealed the little higher activation energy value. The progressive deactivation behavior of the catalysts has also studied. ZSM-5 and Al-MCM-48 showed slower deactivation rates than Al-MCM-41 and Beta. Pyrolysis coupled with gas chromatographic separation and flame ionization detection (Py-GC/ FID) was also performed to assess the characteristics of pyrolysis products. ZSM-5 gave a higher fraction of gaseous products ($C_1-C_4$). Al-MCM-41 and Beta produced mainly $C_5-C_{12}$ products. The selectivity to oil product ($C_5-C_{22}$) obtained with Al- MCM-48 is higher an that with the other catalysts employed in this study.

  • Using a pinus koraiensis and pinus rigida which are normally being discarded in South Korea, the optimal condition of producing charcoals has been studied to develop activated carbons which can be recycled as a higher value-added product. A study on manufacture of activated carbons from a discarded timber consists of two processes, the production process of charcoals from a discarded timber by low temperature pyrolysis process and the production process of activated carbons from the charcoals by chemical activation reaction. This study deals with the production process of charcoals from a discarded timber by low temperature pyrolysis process. As a results of experiment, it was investigated that charcoals produced through drying at $150^{\circ}C$ for 6hr and pyrolysis process at $500^{\circ}C$ for 1hr had the highest values in physical properties such as iodine number and BET surface area. Furthermore, through observing SEM images, the maximum development of porosity had been founded in this condition. It was confirmed that values of physical properties on using a pinus koraiensis are superior to the ones when using a pinus rigida. When charcoals were produced from a pinus koraiensis in this condition, BET surface area was approx. $640m^2/g$.

  • Green-emitting $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn$ phosphors for PDP(Plasma Display Panel) application were synthesized by colloidal seed-assisted spray pyrolysis process. The codoping with $Gd^{3+}/Li^+$, which replaces $Si^{4+}$ site in the willemite structure, was performed to improve the luminous properties of the $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn$ phosphors. The particles prepared by spray pyrolysis process using fumed silica colloidal solution had a spherical shape, small particle size, narrow size distribution, and non-aggregation characteristics. The $Gd^{3+}/Li^+$ codoping amount affected the luminous characteristics of $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn$ phosphors. The codoping with proper amounts of $Gd^{3+}/Li^+$ improved both the photoluminescence efficiency and decay time of $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn$ phosphor particles. In spray pyrolysis, the post-treatment temperature is another factor controlling the luminous performance of $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn$ phosphors. The $Zn_{1.9}SiO_4:Mn_{0.1}$ phosphor particles containing 0.1 mol% $Gd^{3+}/Li^+$ co-dopant had a 5% higher PL intensity than the commercial product and 5.7 ms decay time after post-treatment at $1,145^{\circ}C$.

  • The characteristics of product materials obtained from thermal degradation of low-qualify pyrolytic oil were investigated in this study. The reactants were produced by pyrolysis of mixed plastic waste with film type in a commercial rotary kiln reaction system. The properties of reactants were measured by elemental analysis, calorimetry analysis and SIMDIST analyst. The result of degradation experiments with different reaction temperature programs was discussed through product yields, cumulative yields and production rates of oil products. The multi-step reaction temperature program resulted in higher yields of product oils and lower yields of residues than one-step reaction temperature program. The product characteristics such as production yield and the rate of oil products etc. were influenced by reaction temperature program in the continuous thermal degradation.
