IBED is a very promosing thin film deposition method because of its many advantages, such as excellent adhesion property of films to substrates, room temperature processing, ease of control over the composition and thickness of films, and so on, over the conventional techniques, It has been widely applied in the field of surface modification of materials in the last decade. In our laboratory, many kinds of thin films, such as wear-resistant hard coatings, corrosion and oxidation protective coatings, biomaterial films, buffer layer for high temperature superconductor films, and oxygen sensitive film, have been synthesized by IBED, and several industrial applications of the IBED films have been conducted.

The Fukushima accident in 2011 revealed some major flaws in traditional nuclear fuel materials under accidental conditions. Thus, the focus of research has shifted toward "accident tolerant fuel" (ATF). The aim of this approach is to develop fuel material solutions that lead to improved reactor safety. The application of protective coatings on the surface of nuclear fuel cladding has been proposed as a near-term solution within the ATF framework. Many coating materials are being developed and evaluated. In this article, an overview of different zirconium-based alloys currently in use in the nuclear industry is provided, and their performances in normal and accidental conditions are discussed. Coating materials proposed by different institutions and organizations, their performances under different conditions simulating nuclear reactor environments are reviewed. The strengths and weaknesses of these coatings are highlighted, and the challenges addressed by different studies are summarized, providing a basis for future research. Finally, technologies and methods used to synthesize thin-film coatings are outlined.

Film of new Ti-15Zr-5Nb alloy formed during galvanic anodizing in orthophosphoric acid solution was characterized by optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and Raman micro-spectroscopy. Its anticorrosive properties were determined by electrochemical techniques. The film had a layer with nanotube-like porosity with diameters in 500-1000 nm range. The nano layer contained significant amounts of P and O as well as alloying element. Additionally, Raman micro-spectroscopy identified oxygen as oxygen ion in $TiO_2$ anatase and phosphorous as $P_2O_7{^{4-}}$ ion in phosphotitanate compound. All potentiodynamic polarization curves in artificial Carter-Brugirard saliva with pH values (pH= 3.96, 7.84, and 9.11) depending on the addition of 0.05M NaF revealed nobler behavior of anodized alloy and higher polarization resistance indicating the film is thicker and more compact nanolayer. Lower corrosion rates of the anodized alloy reduced toxicity due to less released ions into saliva. Bigger curvature radii in Nyquist plot and higher phase angle in Bode plot for the anodized alloy ascertain a thicker, more protective, insulating nanolayer existing on the anodized alloy. Additionally, ESI results indicate anodized film consists of an inner, compact, barrier, layer and an outer, less protective, porous layer.

We have grown a p-GaN film on sapphire by MOCVD and explored the post-annealing effort on the film after depositing a $2500{\AA}$ thick $SiO_2$ protective layer on it. By etching the $SiO_2$ protective film after the heat treatment, the hole concentration was measured, and compared with the data values before the heat treatment. In addition to the concentration, the hole mobility was also monitored while varying the atmospheric gas ratio of $N_2$ and $O_2$, the rapid thermal annealing temperatures ($750^{\circ}C$ and $650^{\circ}C$) and times (1 to 15 min.) In order to investigate the optical and structural properties of the film, room temperature and low temperature PL measurements were conducted.
This study was made on the poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) and poly(vinyl acetate- ethylene) (VAE) emulsion polymer blend which used PVA as protective colloid, and the PVA used as protective colloid was existed in each emulsion film before blend and even in the film after the blend consecutively. It makes us expect excellent adhesive power among particles that form the blend. Emulsion blends with different Tg are important target of concerning, and PVAc/VAE emulsion blend suggested simple and excellent research method. As a result of blend, elongation was lowered by the increase of PVAc, and the plasticizer used in making PVAc affected on the Tg of blend and lowered Tg of VAE emulsion, and the synergy effect of two blends was seen for the tensile strength, thermal resistance, and adhesive strength.

$Mg_{2-2x}Ti_xO_2$ films were prepared by e-beam evaporation method to be used as possible substitutes for the conventional MgO protective layer. The oxygen content in the films and in turn, the ratio of metal to oxygen gradually increased with increasing the $TiO_2$ content in the starting materials. The pure MgO films exhibited the crystallinity with strong (111) orientation. The $Mg_{2-2x}Ti_xO_2$ films, however, had the crystallinity with (311) preferred orientation. When the $[TiO_2/(MgO+TiO_2)]$ ratios of 0.1 and 0.15 were used, the deposited films exhibited the secondary electron emission yields improved by 50% compared to that of the conventional MgO protective layer, which resulted in reduction in discharge voltage by 12%.

To study encapsulation method for large-area organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), red emitting OLEDs were fabricated, on which $Alq_3$ as organic buffer layer and LiF and Al as inorganic protective layers were deposited to protect the damage of OLED by epoxy. And then the OLEDs were attached to flat glass by printing method using epoxy. The basic structure of OLED doped with rubrene of 1 vol.% as emitting layer is ITO(150 nm) / 2-TNATA(50 nm) / ${\alpha}$-NPD(30 nm) / $Alq_3$:Rubrene(30 nm) / $Alq_3$(30 nm) / LiF(0.7 nm) / Al(100 nm). In case of depositing $Alq_3$, LiF and Al and then attaching of flat glass onto OLED, current density, luminance, efficiency and driving voltage were not changed and lifetime was increased according to thickness of Al as inorganic protective layers. The lifetime of OLED/$Alq_3$/LiF/Al_4/glass structure was 139 hours increased by 15.8 times more than bare OLED of 8.8 hours and 1.6 times more than edge sealed OLED of 54.5 hours.
In order to eliminate demerits of conventional dosage forms, dipotassium glycyrrhizate was formulated as a slim mucoadhesive film type dosage form. The mucoadhesive drug layer gel containing dipotassium glycyrrhizate was prepared using $Noveon^{\circledR}$ AA-1, hydroxypropylcellulose-M, ethylcellulose N 100 and citric acid, and the protective layer gel by using ethylcellulose N 100, $Eudragit^{\circledR}$ RS and castor oil. The viscosity of drug layer gel of mucoadhesive film was enhanced as the increased amount of $Noveon^{\circledR}$ AA-1 or hydroxypropyl cellulose-M. The drug content was unifonnly $1160{\pm}14.6\;{\mu}g$, and was varied within 3.5%. The optimum film dosage form showed a good fluidity and malleability of drug layer, with 179 g of thickness, pH 5.7, 411 min of in vitro adhesion time and 172 g in gravity adhesive strength. The release time of drug from the mucoadhesive film was significantly shorter but was delayed when polymers such as ethylcellulose was added. From these results, the new mucoadhesive film may be effective for the treatment of aphthous stomatitis.
Stable zirconia sol was prepared from zirconium butoxide Zr(OC4O9)4 as a precursor and ethylacetoacetate(EAcAc) or diethylene glycol(DEG) as a chelating agent under ambient agent under ambient atmosphere by Sol-Gel process. The sythesized sol was coated on 304 stainless steel substrate by dip coating, thereafter zirconia film could be obtained by heat-treatment at $600^{\circ}C$. The characteristics of coating film were determined by FT-IR, XRD, and ellipsometion peak represented Zr-O-Zr bonding of tetragonal phase was shown at 470cm-1. Crystallization of zirconia gel and film from amorphous state to tetragonal phase started at 40$0^{\circ}C$, and then transformed into monoclinic phase around $700^{\circ}C$. Zirconia film coated on 304 stainless steel substrate showed relatively low porosity of 16% when it was coated with 0.4M zirconia sol and thereafter heat-treated at 80$0^{\circ}C$ and the film was densified continuously up to 90$0^{\circ}C$. The zirconia film of 10 nm thick acted as a protective layer against oxidation up to $700^{\circ}C$.
