  • The concepts of ratio, rate, and proportion are used in everyday life and are also applied to many disciplines such as mathematics and science. Proportional reasoning is known as one of the pivotal ideas in school mathematics because it links elementary ideas to deeper concepts of mathematics and science. However, previous research has shown that it is difficult for students to recognize the proportionality in contextualized situations. The purpose of this study is to understand how the mathematical concept in the middle school mathematics curriculum is connected with ratio, rate, and proportion and to investigate the characteristics of proportional reasoning through analyzing the concept including ratio, rate, and proportion on the middle school mathematics curriculum. This study also examines mathematical concepts (direct proportion, slope, and similarity) presented in a middle school textbook by exploring diverse interpretations among ratio, rate, and proportion and by comparing findings from literature on proportional reasoning. Our textbook analysis indicated that mechanical formal were emphasized in problems connected with ratio, rate, and proportion. Also, there were limited contextualizations of problems and tasks in the textbook so that it might not be enough to develop students' proportional reasoning.

  • In stability and settlement management of soft ground, the settlement prediction technology has been continuously developed and used to reduce construction cost and confirm the exact land use time. However, the preexistence prediction methods such as hyperbolic method, Asaoka method and Hoshino method are difficult to predict the settlement accurately at the beginning of consolidation because the accurate settlement prediction is possible only after many measurement periods have passed. It is judged as the reason for estimating the future settlement through the proportionality assumption of the slope which the preexistence prediction method computes from the settlement curve. In this study, ARIMA technique is introduced among time series analysis techniques and compared with preexistence prediction methods. ARIMA method was predictable without any distinction of ground conditions, and the results similar to the existing method are predicted early (final settlement).

  • This study aims to analyze Joseon mathematical knowledge and its application to real world. The mathematical knowledge refers to measuring the area of plane figures, known as square-shaped land(方田). Its application is land surveys(量田) conducted for taxation purposes. Specifically, this study analyzes the correlation between the related contents in representative mathematical books of the Joseon Dynasty, such as MuksaJipsanbub (17th century), Guiljib (18th century), and SanhakIbmun (18th century), and the shapes and areas of plane figures presented in GwangmuYangan (20th century). The analysis reveals both differences and similarities in the measured area between mathematical books and real world land surveys. While most results of the land survey align with the results obtained from mathematical methods, differences arise due to variations in real measurement of lengths and given conditions in the problems. Additionally, various aspects such as the focus on rectangles in land surveys, the proportionality and relativity of lengths, types of approximation, composed shapes, the purpose of problem solving, and reasoning of unspecified shapes or measures are discussed.

  • The applications of ratio and similarity have been in need of everyday life from ancient times. Euclid's elements Ⅴand Ⅵ cover ratio and similarity respectively. In this note, we have done a comparative analysis to button down the contents of ratio and similarity covered by the math text books used in Korea, Euclid's elements and the math text books used in Japan and America. As results, we can observe some differences between them. When math text books used in Korea introduce ratio, they presented it by showing examples unlike math text books used in America and Japan which present ratio by explaining the definition of it. In addition, in the text books used in Korea and Japan, the order of dealing with condition of similarity of triangles and the triangle proportionality is different from that of the text books used in America. Also, condition of similarity of triangles is used intuitively as postulate without any definition in text books used in Korea and Japan which is different from America's. The manner of teaching depending on the way of introducing learning contents and the order of presenting them can have great influence on student's understanding and application of the learning contents. For more desirable teaching in math it is better to provide text books dealing with various learning contents which consider student's diverse abilities rather than using current text books offering learning contents which are applied uniformly.

  • Along with the development of digital technologies, the information obtained during the medical procedures was working as a source of valuable assets. Especially, the secondary use of personal health information gives the ordeal to privacy protection problems. In korea, the usage of personal medical information is basically regulated by the several laws in view of general and administrative Act like Medicine Act, Public institutions' personal information protection Act, Information-Network Act etc. There is no specific health information protection Act. Health information exchange program for the blood donor referral related with teratogenic drugs and contagious disease and medical treatment reporting system for income tax convenience are the two examples of recently occurred secondary use of health information in Korea. Basically the secondary use of protected health information is depend on the risk-benefit analysis. But to accomplish the minimal invasion to privacy, we need to consider collection limitation principle first. If the expected results were attained with alternative method which is less privacy invasive, we could consider the present method is unconstitutional due to the violation of proportionality rule.

  • The duration and H/V ratio(the amplitude ratio of the horizontal to vertical components) of ground motions caused by earthquakes in southern Korea are analyzed. Total 329 seismograms of horizontal component recorded at hypocentral distances of 10 to 350 km from 27 earthquakes with local magnitude 2 to 4 are used for the analysis. Simplified relation between the duration of ground motion( $T_{d}$) and the ratio($\chi$) of Arias intensity( $I_{A}$) and squared maximum acceleration($\alpha$$_{max}$$^{2}$) is determined to be $T_{d}$ = 3.423$\chi$$^2$+ 8.200$\chi$ + 0.029, which is useful for the estimation of the duration in southern Korea. There are three distinct distance ranges with different linear variations of the duration in hypocentral distance. They are distance intervals of 10~80km, 80~140km, and the distance greater than 140km. The duration in southern Korea shows clear proportionality to the local magnitude at magnitudes greater than 3.1. The value 1.37 of the H/V ratio obtained in southern Korea is similar to the value 1.4 of ENA(Eastern North America). The H/V ratio in southern Korea increases in the frequency range from 0.3 to 10Hz. The duration and H/V ratio of ground motions derived in this study could be used in the stochastic simulation of strong ground motion.ion.n.n.

  • The challenges to achieve three dimensional facial proportionality and occusal stability in many patients with complex dentofacial deformity have been met by the development and use of the maxilla, mandible, and chin surgery techniques in combination with efficient orthodontic treatment. There is a clinical, biological, and biomechanical foundation for simultaneous surgical repositioning of the maxilla, mandible, and chin in a significant proportion of adult and adolescent patients. A combination of the surgical and orthodontic approach may provide increased treatment efficiencies and optimal esthetic results. Art and science to determine the treatment objectives, specifically, the desired soft tissue changes are firstly established by using the clinician's "esthetic sense" of the facial beauty and proportion aided to a few cephalometric guidelines. In this sense, the dependence on the clinician's "esthetic eye" by Dr. Bell is more important in analyzing the facial proportion than the satisfaction of rigid cephalometric norms. The purpose of this article was to elucidate the indication for simultaneous surgical repositioning of the maxilla, mandible, and chin, and to describe the clinical cephalometric analysis for orthognathic surgery. Representative 6 case reports were presented and discussed to illustrate the esthetic, orthodontic, and surgical treatment objectives with long-term follow-up.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the allometric analysis of roxithromycin using pharmacokinetic data. The pharmacokinetic parameters used were $half-life(t_{1/2})$, mean residence time (MRT), clearance (Cl) and volume of distribution at steady state $(V_{ss})$. Relationships between body weight and the pharmacokinetic parameter were based on the empirical formula $Y=aW^b$, where 'Y' is $t_{1/2}$, MRT, Cl, or $V_{ss}$, W the body weight and 'a' is an allometric coefficient (intercept) that is constant for a given drug. The exponential term, 'b', is a proportionality constant that describes the relationship between the pharmacokinetic parameter of interest and body weight. As results of the allometric analyses, the logarithms of $t_{1/2}$, MRT, Cl, and $V_{ss}$ were linearly related to the logarithms of body weight. Results of the current analyses could provide information on appropriate doses of roxithromycin for all species.

  • More than 16 percent of the total 18,032 reservoirs over the country were reported to have leakage problems and need to be improved. Recently, a great deal of progress was made in geophysical survey techniques, particularly in electrical resistivity, and the techniques are used for variety of Purposes in groundwater and dam management due to its economical advantages. This document describes the re-evaluation of existing resistivity data including newly surveyed data, mapping of modeled value in 2-D analysis to locate seepage pathways, This contains also discussion results of more than eighteen years of professional experiences in the field of dam efficiency improvement. In comparison of surface resistivity data with several soil analysis data in laboratory, it is evident that the surface resistivity value shows a qualitative proportionality with the sand contents of the filling materials in earth dam. The result from the study also indicates that the SP method in subsurface investigation is effective to detect seepage in earth filled dam as well as piping through rock/earthfill dike.

  • The present study is focused on improving the methodology for the determination of parameters involved in USLE(Universal Soil Loss Equation) based on distributed system concept and investigation of sediment delivery ratio. Generally the distributed system concept consists of grid networks throughout the watershed and sediment can be traced from grid to rid in the direction of the steepest descent. The sediment yield data together with physical data of 10 small irrigation reservoirs in Kyounggi-Do are collected. After the sediment delivery ratio of a grid is defined to be related tothe fraction of forested or covered with delivery proofing area of the grid, the preportionality coefficient(C$_1$) is introduced. The distributed system model is calibrated using the available data for 8 reservoirs and is verified with the data for the ramaining 2 reservoirs, and regression analysis is made to express the proportionality coefficient $C_1$ in terms of watershed physical characteristics. By applying this results the verification of the distributed system model for 2 reservoirs showed a fair result, which justifies the applicability of the proposed method in the present study.
