The Effect of Text Information Frame Ratio and Font Size on the Text Readability of Circle Smartwatch

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to examine frame ratio of text information and font size in the circle smartwatch. Background: Recently, electronic manufacturers try to develop the original metaphor of traditional wrist watch (circle) in terms of smartwatch. They endeavor to break the square display in order to improve emotional customer satisfaction. Method: The experiments examined twenty level of text information design, combinations of four frame ratios (1:1, 4:3, 16:9, 21:9) and five font sizes (6pt, 7pt, 8pt, 9pt, 10pt). Nineteen participants volunteered for the experiment. Dependent variables were WPM (Words per Minute), reading preference, design preference and total preference. Furthermore, small circle display was made by using circle display data (1.3inch), which was exhibited in IFA (International Funkausstellung) 2014. Results: As a result, ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) revealed that WPM, and task time preference affect the specific frame ratio and font size. Results of ANOVA for reading preference, design preference, total preference were grouped by post-analysis LSD (Least Significant Difference). Among users, display ratio (16:9, 21:9), and font size (9pt) were preferred. In conclusion, 16:9 display ratio and 9pt are adaptable for text information in 1.3inch circle display. Conclusion: From the study, it is shown that 16:9 display ratio and 9pt size are more adaptable for text information in 1.3inch circle display than others. It is mainly due to the fact that the order of frame ratio and font size may affect the usability of reading long text information in a small circle display. Therefore, when developers design a circle display, the square frame ratio and font size are required to be considered according to circle size. Application: The 16:9 display ratio and 9pt font size may be utilized as a text information frame in the circle display design guideline for smartwatch.

  • Effectiveness of information conveyance in reading is affected by several factors such as line length, letter size, line spacing arrangement as well as typeface itself. This study examined relative importance of these factors by asking people to read the texts that was constituted with non-square form letter and rank the preference of texts through conjoint analysis. In the case of reading time, justification was the most important factor, followed by leading, line spacing, letter width, line length, font size, font type in their order of importance. And in the case of preference decision, letter width was the most important factor, followed by font size, justification, line spacing, leading, line length, font type. The result will be useful in understanding how to consider human preference in the hangul typography.

Preference and Readability of Hangul Fonts in the Presbyopic Age (노안 연령에서 한글서체의 선호도와 가독성 평가)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine a suitable type and size of Hangul fonts for printed materials in the presbyopic age. Methods: Based on the most common Hangul fonts used today, three types of fonts were used Hamchrombatang, Sinmoonmyungjo and Sinmyungjo at small font sizes in the range 9-11 point (pt). Subjects were 101 volunteers aged 41 through 85 years. Near visual acuity (VA) was corrected to read VA 0.5 at 40 cm after distance correction. The subjects were asked to read words containing 88 characters in 10 pt after a question about preference. Readability was assessed by reading rate that was calculated as the number of words read correctly in one minute (words per minute, wpm). Results: The most preferred font type was Simmyungjo at small font sizes. Although preferred font sizes were different in each font type, Sinmyungjo was generally preferred at 10 pt more than other fonts. Hamchrombatang and Sinmyungjo were read significantly faster than Sinmoonmyungjo. There was a weak negative relationship between readability and age in Sinmyungjo. In comparing between the top 10% and the bottom 10% group sorted by reading rate, the top group showed lower average age and addition than the bottom group, however there were no significant differences in reading rate among the fonts. Conclusions: Although increasing age tends to be low in readability for Sinmyungjo, in the light of preferred font and readability, it is recommended to use a 10 pt Sinmyungjo font in printed materials for the presbyopic age.

  • Each font has its own unique characteristics, thus every font relays a different feeling. The proper selection and usage of fonts helps us further understand the contents they deliver. Use of fonts which varies depending on one's habits or experience, expands the meaning of contents. Hence, users should pick up the most appropriate fontto comply with meanings, gender, age, objects, and cultural environment. The Proper selection of fonts have been emphasized by various researches but currently, there are not much studies undertaken within the domain of fonts. Furthermore, there are no definite standards or guidelines to proper font selection or their usage. This study delves into changes of font preference according to meaningful sentences and meaningless sentences with the former comprising in positive and negative sentences. The authors of this research hope that this study will help users to understand the necessity for application of different fonts in tune with each meaning , guideline for the application methods, provision of instruction on developing fonts to font makers.

  • VMS(Variable Message Sign) which makes the traffic flow smooth by providing traffic information to road users in real-time has been being installed or operated on the road as part of the detailed ITS system. However, some problems were found as a result of survey on express way currently. In the part of the phase operation, the message interpretation time wasn't defined so that the phase operation was difficult. In the part of the information service, not considering characteristic of the VMS section caused the confusion to drivers. In the part of the message exposure, font, alignment, conversion and composition of the information were not consistent and use of superfluous words and inconsistent use of word having the same meaning brought about the problem on information communication This study established the detailed exposure method based on instructions relative to VMS operation. The method established by defining the number of appropriate phase and setting required function of each individual VMS installation location. The method is as follow. the font type is the GULIM, the message conversion method is simple conversion method, the alignment method is centering alignment method and the color is defined according to each situation. In this study, the preference survey was performed to review the validity of the proposed improvement through the common driver. The results were similar with the pre-study except for the font type. This study established the detailed exposure method based on instructions relative to VMS operation. The method established by defining the number of appropriate phase and setting required function of individual VMS installation location. For the evaluation of status and improvement, preference survey of ordinary drivers and statistics analysis was carried.

  • This study is about designing mobile phone display in consideration of elder people's preferences by reason of their optical weakness. The research is closely connected with designing user-friendly interface by considering user characteristics. The criteria for first experiment are font sizes, font types, line spacing and background colors. With the experiment result, relative importance of each attribute and subjective preference are investigated by conjoint analysis. Secondly, an optimal display design for elder people is presented by response surface method on the basis of the result of conjoint analysis, other statistical analyses, and user interviews.

  • Television market is rapidly changing into HDTV according to increase in the programs transmitted in HD. However, there is no guideline of Korean typography which is suitable for HD display. Here we provide a guideline on Korean font style, its size and transparency to acquire high readability on HD screen. The readability was assessed with two different criteria: reading speed as an objective index and preference ranking as a subjective index. In the results, the participants tend to prefer and read faster slim fonts on HD display when compared to the bold type commonly used on 3D display To the font size, smaller one was preferred on HDTV than that displayed on SDTV. To the transparency, users revealed strong preference on 40% transparency although it did not affect the reading speed when the contrast between text and background was fixed on 40%. But clearly, preference on 40% transparency.
