  • In order to understand the economic feasibility of an offshore wind farm, this paper analyzed the differences in LCOE (levelized cost of energy) according to the support type and construction method of the substructure in terms of LCOE and sensitivity analysis was conducted according to the main components of LCOE. As for the site to be studied, the Southwest Offshore Wind Farm was selected, and the capital expenditures were calculated according to the size of the offshore wind farm and the installation unit. As a result of the sensitivity analysis, major components showed high sensitivity to availability, turbine related cost, weighted average cost of capital and balance of system related cost. Moreover, the post-piling jacket method, which was representatively applied to the substructure of the offshore wind farm in Korea, was selected as a basic plan to calculate the capital expenditures, and then the capital expenditures of the pre-piling jacket method and the tripod method were calculated and compared. As a result of analyzing the LCOE, it was confirmed that the pre-piling jacket method of the supporting structure lowers the LCOE and improves economic feasibility as the installation number of turbines increases.

  • One of the most important issues in tunneling, is the squeezing phenomenon. Squeezing can occur during excavation or after the construction of tunnels, which in both cases could lead to significant damages. Therefore, it is important to predict the squeezing and consider it in the early design stage of tunnel construction. Different empirical, semi-empirical and theoretical-analytical methods have been presented to determine the squeezing. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the ability of each of these methods and identify the best method among them. In this study, squeezing in a part of the Alborz service tunnel in Iran was estimated through a number of empirical, semi- empirical and theoretical-analytical methods. Among these methods, the most robust model was used to obtain a database including 300 data for training and 33 data for testing in order to develop a machine learning (ML) method. To this end, three ML models of Gaussian process regression (GPR), artificial neural network (ANN) and support vector regression (SVR) were trained and tested to propose a robust model to predict the squeezing phenomenon. A comparative analysis between the conventional and the ML methods utilized in this study showed that, the GPR model is the most robust model in the prediction of squeezing phenomenon. The sensitivity analysis of the input parameters using the mutual information test (MIT) method showed that, the most sensitive parameter on the squeezing phenomenon is the tangential strain (ε_θ^α) parameter with a sensitivity score of 2.18. Finally, the GPR model was recommended to predict the squeezing phenomenon in tunneling projects. This work's significance is that it can provide a good estimation of the squeezing phenomenon in tunneling projects, based on which geotechnical engineers can take the necessary actions to deal with it in the pre-construction designs.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the home economics pre-service teachers' verbal interactions during their teaching practicum. For this purpose, the class interactions of four pre-service teachers were recorded, and the data were analyzed using advanced Flanders' verbal interaction analysis. The major findings are as follows: First, the item with the highest proportion of occurrences consisted of the pre-service teachers' 'lectures', 'nonverbal conditions' and 'asks questions'. 'forms a positive learning atmosphere' and 'praises or encourages' exhibited fewer occurrences, and there was little 'giving direction', 'criticizing students or justifying authority'. Second, the instances of class interactions appeared in the form of 'asks questions-student talk response' or 'lecture-asks questions', and in the last class were 'ask questions-student talk initiation' and 'accepts or uses ideas of students'. Third, trends of verbal interactions tend to be generally indirect, and students' remarks have appeared acceptable and compassionate. Fourth, according to expert analysis, 'class management questions' and 'diffusion questions' have increased. Pre-service teachers can guide students through their learning activities, and students can expand their thinking through the teachers' questions. As these results demonstrate, self-study analyses of pre-service teachers and active support in field are needed.

  • The performance evaluation of cold weather clothing is mainly carried out with thermal resistance. However, the results of the revised test method regarding the same specimen were decreased compare to previous one. In addition, there were deviations of the results among the authorized testing institutes according to the different interpretation of the KS test method. This makes it a considerable difficulty to the quality assurance of combat supplies. The purpose of this study is to minimize the variation of the results before and after the revision by analyzing the cause of the decrease in the heat insulation rate according to the revised test method. For this purpose, the difference between the test conditions before and after the revision of KS is analyzed and the possible results are reviewed. In addition, we want to minimize the result deviation between testing laboratories by analyzing the cause of the result deviation between test laboratories according to arbitrary interpretation of the standard. Based on this, we propose a standardized test method to prevent the decrease of the heat insulation rate by checking the pre-revision test method and the condition with the least deviation.

  • The fusion technology of small sensor and wireless communication was followed by various application examples of the embedded system, where the social infrastructural facilities and ecological environment were wirelessly monitored. In addition, this technology represents the primary application area being extended into the healthcare field. In this study, a body area network for ubiquitous healthcare is presented. More specifically this represents a wireless biomedical signal acquisition device characterized by small size, low power consumption, pre-processing and archiving capability. Using this device, a new method for monitoring vital signs and activity is created. A PDA-based wireless sensor network enables patients to be monitored during their daily living, without any constraints. Therefore, the proposed method can be used to develop Activities of Daily Living (ADL) monitoring devices for the elderly or movement impaired people. A medical center would be able to remotely monitor the current state of elderly people and support first-aid in emergency cases. In addition, this method will reduce medical costs in society, where the average life expectancy is increasing.

  • The number of people who have lost limbs due to amputation has increased due to various accidents and diseases. Numerous attempts have been made to provide these people with prosthetic devices. These devices are often controlled using myoelectric signals. Although the success of fitting myoelectric signals (EMG) for single device control is apparent, extension of this control to more than one device has been difficult. The lack of success can be attributed to inadequate multifunctional control strategies. Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop multifunctional myoelectric control strategies that can generate a number of output control signals. We demonstrated the feasibility of a neural network classification control method that could generate 12 functions using three EMG channels. The results of evaluating this control strategy suggested that the neural network pattern classification method could be a potential control method to support reliability and convenience in operation. In order to make this artificial neural network control technique a successful control scheme for each amputee who may have different conditions, more investigation of a careful selection of the number of EMG channels, pre-determined contractile motions, and feature values that are estimated from the EMG signals is needed.

  • Constructing substructures by using Top-Down or Downward method needs an efficient formwork system because of difficulties in supporting concrete slabs from the bottom while excavation is in process. Existing underground formwork systems can be classified by three types: graded ground supported type (Slab On Grade, Beam On Grade), suspension type (Non Supporting Top Down Method), and bracket supported type (Bracket Supported R/C Downward). Each method has its own advantages and limits. Application of a specific formwork system for a given construction site is determined by various conditions and affect construction time and cost. This paper presents a newly developed underground non-supporting formwork system, which combines the advantages of a suspension type and a bracket supported type while it overcomes limits of two types. The developed system has a moving formwork which is supported by suspension cables hanging from the bracket placed at the top of pre-installed substructure columns. Then, the moving formwork is repeatedly lowered down for the next floor below to support concrete slab during curing. The details of this bracket and cable supported system have been investigated for the improvement of easiness in construction.

  • Without providing a proper security measure to the handover procedure in Mobile WiMAX, several security attacks can be mounted. Even though security schemes have been previously proposed for this purpose, they are still vulnerable to several security attacks due to fatal design flaws. A newly proposed security scheme in this paper is based on the framework of authentication domain and concept of handover ticket. A method of establishing security associations within the authentication domain is proposed, and a lightweight security measure to protect the management messages associated with the handover is also proposed. Especially, using the handover ticket, the new security scheme can defend against a Redirection Attack arising from a compromised base station. The new security scheme is comparatively analyzed with the previous security schemes in terms of Replay, Session Hijacking, Man-In-The-Middle, and Redirection attacks.

  • This paper presents a new adaptive observer design method for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems by using spline approximation. This scheme leads to a simplified observer structure which requires only fixed number of integrations, regardless of the number of parameters to be estimated. This benefit can reduce the number of integrations of the observer filter dramatically. Moreover, the proposed adaptive observer automatically generates the required spline elements according to the varying output value and, as a result, does not requires the pre-knowledge of upper and lower bounds of the output. This is another benefit of our approach since the requirement for known output bounds have been one of the main drawbacks of practical universal approximation problems. Both of the benefits stem from the local support property, which is specific to splines.

  • Shipping companies consider most of the ship turnaround time as a critical factor when selecting a rolling port for reducing costs. So, many researchers have been studying for the optimization of preplanning and high~performance of the Gantry Cranes (GCs) in container terminals for faster loading and unloading. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) based RTLS (Real-Time Location System) for reducing the ship turnaround time in ubiquitous port environment. In addition, pre-planning based on ubiquitous computing environment will support the GC and Yard Tractors (YTs), and reduce ship turnaround time more effectively. Especially, the proposed method enormously enhances the productivity of loading for the twin-lift system It will reduce the whole lead-time in the process of port logistics.
