Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with various metabolic abnormalities, including central obesity, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and high blood pressure. This suggests that NAFLD may represent the hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome. In this study, we investigated unfavorable effects NAFLD on components of metabolic syndrome in post-menopause women. Eight hundred sixty-nine postmenopausal women were recruited for this study. The diagnosis of fatty liver was based on the results of abdominal ultrasonography. Serum levels of fasting glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, and HDL-cholesterol were measured. The prevalence of component of metabolic syndrome such as hypertension, hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and low-HDL-cholesterol was significantly higher in subjects with NAFLD as compared with those without NAFLD. The moderate to severe grade of NAFLD presented higher levels of serum fasting glucose, fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, total cholesterol, and triglycerides than the mild NAFLD and the normal group. In conclusion, metabolic syndrome risk was increased in post-menopause women with NAFLD as compared with those without NAFLD. The severity of NAFLD affected metabolic syndrome risk factors. The optimal strategy for the treatment of NAFLD is likely to include lifestyle modifications and therapy to improve insulin resistance.

Objectives: Postmenopausal hot flush and sweating is troublesome symptom to most of climacteric women. It is well known that Korean medicine is safe and effective on climacteric symptoms. So this study aims to report the clinical effect of Korean medicine on postmenopausal hot flush and sweating. Methods: The patient received herbal medication, acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping therapy, Gong-jin therapy, and Korean medicine music therapy during hospitalization (about 8 days). Results: Hot flush and sweating was effectively reduced after the treatment. Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for hot flush and sweating decreased from 9 to 2. Hot flush score decreased from 20 to 8. Area of hot flush and sweating also markedly decreased. Conclusions: This case shows that Korean medicine is effective on climacteric symptoms.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to review the acupuncture treatment Urinary incontinence (UI) and Overactive bladder (OAB) in postmenopausal women. Methods: We searched articles in 8 search engines with keywords related to 'Overactive bladder', 'Urinary incontinence' and 'Menopause' in July 2022. Randomized Controlled Trials (RCT) that used acupuncture on Urinary incontinence (UI) and Overactive bladder (OAB) after menopause were included. Animal studies and non RCT data were excluded. Data on acupuncture treatment such as methods, site, duration, frequency, and period were analyzed. Also, network analysis between acupoints was conducted. Results: 15 articles were selected and analyzed. Studies were conducted using manual acupuncture, electroacupuncture, pharmacopuncture and fire acupuncture. Most studies used more than one acupoint, and there were 32 acupoints selected for acupuncture treatment for UI and OAB after menopause. The most commonly used acupoint was 中極 (CV3) (n=8). In terms of the correlation of acupoints, 太谿 (KI3) had the highest value of degree centrality at 0.75. The mean treatment time, number of treatments, and duration were 26.42±6.10 minutes, 18.71±9.09 times, and 6.87±4.77 weeks. Conclusions: The results of this study could be useful in establishing the evidence for performing standardized acupuncture treatment for Urinary incontinence and Overactive bladder in postmenopausal women.
Few studies have shown the correlation between metabolic syndrome and bone mineral density (BMD). The main pathogenic mechanisms of metabolic syndrome rely on chronic low-level inflammatory status and oxidative stress. There are few studies that examine the gender-specific effects of inflammation and antioxidants on BMD. In this study, we evaluated the relative contribution of these factors in patients with metabolic syndrome. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 67 men and 46 postmenopausal women with metabolic syndrome; metabolic syndrome was defined as having three or more metabolic syndrome risk factors. BMD, body fat mass, and lean body mass were evaluated. We also examined the levels of high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), adiponectin, vitamin E, and C in serum. Log-transformed hs-CRP levels were significantly higher in lumbar spine osteoporotic subjects than in normal subjects for women but not for men. There was no significant difference between the normal group and the osteoporotic group in other inflammatory markers. Stepwise regression analyses for BMD of the lumbar spine showed that lean body mass and vitamin E were significant determinants in men. Lean body mass and log-transformed hs-CRP were significant determinants in women Analysis for BMD of the femoral neck showed that lean body mass was a significant determinant for both men and women. There was no significant factor among the inflammatory markers or antioxidant vitamins affecting the femoral neck BMD for either gender. In conclusion, while hs-CRP is an independent predictor of the BMD of the lumbar spine in women, vitamin E showed profound effects on BMD in men but not women with metabolic syndrome.

Women are reported to have increased risk of metabolic syndrome after menopause. Nevertheless, there is a lack of study on the convergent association between breast-feeding, bone mineral density(BMD) and metabolic syndrome due to women's childbirth. In this study, the data of 939 elderly women using raw data from the fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES V-1 and 2) in 2010 and 2011 were analyzed. The correlation between breast-feeding children, BMD and metabolic syndrome was analyzed by dividing them into three groups based on the number of breast-feeding children. As a result of the analysis, no specific association was found between risk factors of metabolic syndrome and BMD according to the increase in the number of breast-feeding children after adjustment for confounders. However, elderly women with a large number of breast-feeding children showed a significant association with more risk factors of metabolic syndrome. These findings can be used as a basic material for the prevention and diagnosis of metabolic syndrome and health care in elderly women.
Objectives : To study correlation between Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging, Kupperman’s Index (KI) and Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) of Postmenopausal Women Methods : We analyzed 114 patients visiting Pohang Oriental Hospital from 1 st January 2014 to 30 th September 2015. The evaluating indexed of this trial were Age, DITI, KI, MRS. Temperature and different of temperature, such as In-dang (HN3), dan-Jung (CV17), gwan-won (CV4), hyup-back (LU4), no-gung (PC8), bock-to (ST31), and tae-chung (LR3). Results : Age was no correlation with DITI, KI, and MRS. There were positive correlation with KI and MRS significantly. DITI was not correlated with Age, KI and MRS, while ⊿T1 (LU4-PC8) was correlated with ⊿T2 (ST31-LR3) and ⊿T3 (CV17-CV4). Conclusions : There were non-significant correlation between DITI and Menopausal scale, but significant correlation in DITI themselves, Menopausal themselves. The More studies ar needed for the more accurate oriental medical diagnosis

Objectives: Postmenopausal symptoms are subject to many factors. Recently, obesity has been suggested as a factor of hot flush. So this study aims to report the relationship between body composition and Menopause Rating Scale (MRS), The Menopause-specific Quality of Life Questionnaire (MENQOL) of postmenopausal women. Methods: We studied 42 climacteric women who had visited Kyung Hee University Hospital at Gangdong from April 2011 to July 2014. 42 women had filled out MRS, MENQOL, and they had taken body composition tests. Pearson correlation tests were conducted. (Correlation was statistically significant at the 0.05 level) Results: Correlation between psychological subscale of MENQOL and Waist-Hip Ratio (WHR) was statistically significant (pearson correlation coefficient=0.385; p-value=0.012). But other subscales of MRS and MENQOL were not statistically related with body composition. Conclusions: WHR could be an important factor of psychological health of menopausal women. So, abdominal fat reduction must be considered when curing menopausal symptoms. In connection with climacteric depression, well-designed studies would be necessary.
The present study was conducted to assess the association between serum ferritin and 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Korean women. The data of a total of 9,256 adults (4,196 premenopausal women and 4,340 postmenopausal women) aged ≥ 20 years from the Fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES V) (2010-2012) were analyzed. The key study results were as follows: First, in women without MetS, after adjusting for related variables (age, smoking, alcohol consumption, regular exercise, SBP, DBP, WM, TC, TGs, HDL-C, FPG, Hb, Hct, and Fe), vitamin D status was positively associated with serum ferritin levels (premenopausal, p < 0.001; postmenopausal, p = 0.027). Second, in women with MetS, after adjusting for related variables, vitamin D status was not associated with serum ferritin levels (premenopausal, p = 0.739; postmenopausal, p = 0.278). In conclusions, vitamin D status was positively associated with serum ferritin levels in women without MetS but not in women with MetS.
The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of Dendropanax morbifera (DM) extract on postmenopausal syndrome and to develop DM extract as an alternative for hormonal therapy. The following seven groups of rats; normal control (sham), ovariectomized (OVX) control, Punica granatum (PG)-treated group (770 mg/kg), estradiol treated group (0.5 mg/kg), and three DM-treated groups (200, 500, 1000 mg/kg) were compared. Indicated compounds were administrated once a day for eight weeks. To evaluate the estrogenic effect of DM extract, western blot analysis was performed on the liver tissue to confirm the expression of estrogen receptor ($ER-{\alpha}$, $ER-{\beta}$). Our analysis showed that after DM administration, collagen cross-linked C-telopeptide (CTX) value decreased while $ER-{\alpha}$ protein expression increased in a dose-dependent manner through the MAPK/ERK pathway in OVX rats. These results suggest that Dendropanax morbifera exerts estrogenic effect by inducing estrogen receptor expression and activating MAPK/ERK pathway.
Objectives: This study was a methodological study to verify the reliability and validity and to make a diagnosis of a diagnostic tool for climacteric and postmenopausal syndrome pattern identification (CaPSPI). Methods: This study was conducted from June 1, 2018 to October 18, 2018 with ${{\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}}$ University Korean Medicine Hospital IRB's approval (2018-3). To make a diagnosis using CaPSPI, we decided the cut-points for the tool. Three professors of ${{\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}}$Korean Medical University conducted pattern identification diagnosis. The result is marked from 0 to 3, 0 is 'No', 1 is 'Slightly Yes', 2 is 'Yes' and 3 is 'Very Yes'. And if two or more professors' diagnoses are the same, we took the diagnoses as a diagnostic criteria. The decision of pattern by three experts converted to 0-1 scores in two ways. In "method 1", if the diagnosis was zero points, the score was 0 (have no such identification), and the rest was 1 (have such identification). In "method 2", if the diagnosis was zero or 1 point, the score was 0, and the rest was 1. After that, intraclass correlation was calculated for experts agreement. And logistic regression was conducted. A response variable was the results of the experts' diagnosis and an explanatory variable was the results of the pattern identification diagnostic tool. Results: The diagnosis of the three experts showed excellent concordance of more than 0.794 and showed a significant correlation with the diagnostic tool. Both 'Method 1' and 'Method 2' showed statistically significant effects with the diagnosis of 3 experts and the results of the diagnostic tool. The frequency of cumulative pattern identification diagnosis in 'Method 1' and 'Method 2' were found to be 578 occasions and 203 occasions, respectively. The average number of pattern held by participants in 'Method 1' and 'Method 2' were found to be 5.26 and 1.85, respectively. In both "Method 1" and "Method 2," the yield frequency of liver qi depression was the highest, and the frequency of kidney yin deficiency and liver-kidney yin deficiency was relatively high. Conclusions: Based on the above results, it is thought that, in diagnosis using CaPSPI of menopausal women, 'method 1' could be used for the health diagnosis and prevention, 'method 2' could be used for the pattern diagnosis. On the conclusion, CaPSPI is thought to be available for pattern diagnosis of menopause women.
