  • General condensers consist of many tubes supported by tube sheets and support plates to prevent the deflection of the condenser tubes. When a fluid at high pressure and temperature runs over the tubes for the purpose of transferring heat from one medium to another, the tubes vibrate and their surface comes into contact with the support plates. This vibration causes damage to the tubes, such as cracks and wear. We propose an ultrasonic guided wave technique to detect the above problems in the support plate region. In the proposed method, the ultrasonic guided wave mode, L(0,1), is excited using an internal transducer probe from a single position at the end of the tube. In this paper, we present a preliminary experimental verification using a super stainless tube and show that the defects can be discriminated from the support signals in the support region.

  • In This work an analysis of the propagation of waves of functionally graduated plates is presented by using a high order hyperbolic (HSDT) shear deformation theory. This theory has only four variables, which is less than the theory of first order shear deformation (FSDT). Therefore, a shear correction coefficient is not required. Unlike other conventional shear deformation theories, the present work includes a new field of displacement which introduces indeterminate integral variables. The properties of materials are supposed classified in the direction of the thickness according to two simple distributions of a power law in terms of volume fractions of constituents. The governing equations of the wave propagation in the functionally graded plate are derived by employing the Hamilton's principle. The analytical dispersion relation of the functionally graded plate is obtained by solving an eigenvalue problem. The convergence and the validation of the proposed theoretical numerical model are performed to demonstrate the efficacy of the model.

  • A numerical method is presented for an out-of-plane structural intensity analysis of rectangular thick plates with arbitrary elastic edge constraints. The method adapts an assumed mode method based on Timoshenko beam functions to obtain the velocities and internal forces needed for a structural intensity analysis. To verify the presented method, the structural intensity of a square thick plate under harmonic force excitation, for which four edges are simply supported, is analyzed, and the result is compared with existing solutions using the assumed mode method based on trigonometric functions. In addition, numerical analyses are carried out for a rectangular-shaped thick plate under harmonic force excitations, of which three edges are simply supported and one edge utilizes an arbitrary elastic edge constraint. These numerical examples show the good accuracy and applicability of the presented method for rectangular thick plates with arbitrary edge constraints.

  • Exercise of complete control on all aspects of any manufacturing / fabrication process is very difficult, leading to uncertainties in the material properties and geometric dimensions of structural components. This is especially true for laminated composites because of the large number of parameters associated with its fabrication. When the basic parameters like elastic modulus, density and Poisson's ratio are random, the derived response characteristics such as deflections, natural frequencies, buckling loads, stresses and strains are also random, being functions of the basic random system parameters. In this study the basic elastic properties of a composite lamina are assumed to be independent random variables. Perturbation formulation is used to model the random parameters assuming the dispersions small compared to the mean values. The system equations are analyzed to obtain the mean and the variance of the plate natural frequencies. Several application problems of free vibration analysis of composite plates, employing the proposed method are discussed. The analysis indicates that, at times it may be important to include the effect of randomness in material properties of composite laminates.

  • The Rayleigh-Ritz procedure based on energy method is used to present analytically the natural frequencies and the critical buckling loads for four types of loading conditions: (1) uniaxial, (2) biaxial, (3) positive shear and (4) negative shear, of the rectangular, composite plates unidirectionally stiffened with box beam type stiffeners. In analysis the discrete stiffener theory is adopted to present the effect of stiffeners in the plate structure. The convergence study is presented to demonstrate the accuracy of the results. Contour plots of the vibrated and buckled mode shapes are shown for some examples. The effect of various parameters such as numbers, position, aspect ratio of stiffener and layer angle, aspect ratio of plate are focused.

  • A simplified method for the calculation of buckling and vibrational characteristics of initially stressed rectangular plate and antisymmetric angle-ply laminated plates is presented in this paper using the natural frequencies under unloading state. The equation of motion of rectangular plate with two opposite edges simply supported is investigated on the basis of Rayleigh-Ritz method and Mindlin plate theory with effect of the curvature term. The relationships of the non-dimensional natural frequencies with initial stresses the coeffcients of critical buckling and the boundaries of the dynamic principal instability region can be characterized by the non-dimensional natureal frequencies under unloading state. Numerical examples are presented to verify the simplified equations and to illustrate potential applications of the analysis.

  • Unlike the usual bone plate and screw fracture fixation, an improved plate fixation method, which can transfer gradually physiological load to bones, is described. The key feature of the present method is to use washers between the plate and the screw. Bio-absorbable materials or non-ferrous materials with good damping characteristics are used to manufacture the washers. The purpose of this paper is to discuss potential advantages of the proposed method, and to show experimentally its improved impact-absorbing characteristics. Vibration experiments are carried out for pig femurs and cow tibias with and without the proposed washers. This experiments show that the washers can drop the first peak value suite substantially in the FRF plots. Although in-vivo experiments have not been conducted, the present fixation method appears to be a simple and effective alternative to the presently used method.

  • Sandwich plate is consisted of equal two isotropic, thin, stiff and strong sheets of dense material separated symmetrically by an isotropic thick layer which may be much less stiff and strong. This study analyzed the dependency of the natural frequencies and mode shapes of sandwich plates on material properties, thicknesses of faces and cores, and various boundary conditions using Rayleigh-Ritz method. E-glass Woven Roving and another two kinds of materials were selected as a face, P.V.C. and another kinds of materials were selected as a core. Natural frequencies and mode shapes obtained by Rayleigh-Ritz method were compared with F.E.M. solutions using ADINA program.

  • By virtue of an application of the receptance method, simplified formulae to calculate natural frequencies of stiffened plates having a resiliently mounted or concentrated mass are obtained. Some numerical results are compared with those based on Lagrange's equation of motion and with experimental results. For the problem formulation the stiffened plate is reduced to an equivalent orthotropic plate, a resiliently mounted mass to a spring-mass system, and mode shapes of the plate are assumed with comparison functions consisting of Euler beam functions. The proposed formulae give results in good conformity to both numerical results based on Lagrange's equation of motion and experimental results for in-phase modes of the coupled system. For out-of-phase modes the conformity is assured only in case that the natural frequency of the attached system is less than a half of that the stiffened plate. It is also found that a resiliently mounted mass having its own natural frequency of about two or more times that of the stiffened plate can be reduced to a concentrated mass with assurance of a few percent error in the frequency.

  • In this paper, a modified 10-node equivalent solid element(MQM10 element), which has smallest degrees of freedom among 3-dimensional solid elements accounting bending deformation as well as extensional and shear deformations of isotropic plates, is proposed. The proposed MQM10 element exhibits stiffer bending stiffness due to the reduction of degrees of freedom from 20-node element or Q11 element. As an effective way to correct the relative stiffness stiffening phenomenon, the modification equation of Gauss sampling points is proposed. The quantity of modification is a function of Poisson's ratio. The effectiveness of MQM10 element is tested by applying it to several examples. It is noted that the results of static and free vibration analysis of isotropic plates using MQM10 elements show a good agreement with those using 20-node element.
