  • In this study, an FRF-based structural damage identification method (SDIM) is proposed for plate structures. The present SDIM is derived from the partial differential equation of motion of the damaged plate, in which damage is characterized by damage distribution function. Various factors that might affect the accuracy of the damage identification are investigated. They include the number of modal data used in the analysis and the damage-induced modal coupling. In the present SDIM, an efficient iterative damage self-search method is introduced. The iterative damage search method efficiently reduces the size of problem by searching out and then by removing all damage-free zones at each iteration of damage identification analysis. The feasibility of the present SDIM is studied by some numerically simulated tests.

  • This paper is concerned with the vibration analysis of a rectangular plate with multiple rectangular holes. Even though there have been many methods developed for the addressed problem, they suffer from computational time. In this paper, we applied the Independent Coordinate Coupling Method(ICCM) to the addressed problem, which was developed to compute natural vibration characteristics of the rectangular plate with a rectangular hole and proven to be computationally effective. The ICCM is based on Rayleigh-Ritz method but utilizes independent coordinates for each hole domain. By matching the deflection conditions for each hole imposed on the expressions, we can easily derive the reduced mass and stiffness matrices. The resulting equation is then used for the calculation of the eigenvalue problem. The numerical results show the efficacy of the Independent Coordinate Coupling Method.

  • Precision of theoretical group velocity of waves in shell structures was discussed for the purpose of source localization of loose parts impact in pressure vessels of nuclear power plants. Estimating exact location of loose parts impact inside a reactor or a steam generator is very important in safety management of a NPP. Evaluation of correct propagation velocity of impact signals in pressure vessels, most of which are shell structures, is essential in impact source localization. Theoretical group velocities of impact signals in a plate and a shell were calculated by wave equations and compared to the velocities measured experimentally in a plate specimen and a scale model of a nuclear reactor. The wave equation applicable to source localization algorithm in shell structures was chosen by the study.

  • In order to examine the validity of an asymptotic solution for nonlinear interaction in asymmetric vibration modes of a perfect circular plate, we obtain the numerical solution. The motion of the plate is governed by nonlinear partial differential equation. The initial and boundary value problem is solved by using the finite difference method. The numerical solution is compared with the asymptotic solution. It is found that traveling waves relating clockwise and counterclockwise as well as standing wave are depicted by the numerical solution.

  • In this paper, a new approach to detect surface cracks from a noisy thermal image in the infrared thermography is presented using an holomorphic characteristic of temperature field in a thin plate under steady-state thermal condition. The holomorphic function for 2-D heat flow field in the plate was derived from Cauchy Riemann conditions to define a contour integral that varies according to the existence and strength of a singularity in the domain of integration. The contour integral at each point of thermal image eliminated the temperature variation due to heat conduction and suppressed the noise, so that its image emphasized and highlighted the singularity such as crack. This feature of holomorphic function was also investigated numerically using a simple thermal field in the thin plate satisfying the Laplace equation. The simulation results showed that the integral image selected and detected the crack embedded artificially in the plate very well in a noisy environment.

  • The Boundary Element Method(BEM) has many advantages. Nevertheless the applicability of BEM to structural analysis is seemed to be behind the other methods. This study presents the application of the BEM for analysis of assembled plate structures which is light weight and has a great loading capacity. Firstly, we formulate the boundary integral equation of the single plate, using the biharmonic fundamental solution for plate bending and internal force problems. Nextly, each plates are assembled on 3-dimensional space. In this process, the boundary conditions on assemble line are used. To verify the objectivity and universal validity of analysis by BEM, the results of BEM was compared to that of SAP90 by using FEM.

  • This paper proposes an identification method for modes of a thin plate where multiple actuators and sensors are bonded. When a natural frequency of a mode is decoupled from all other natural frequencies, the mode can be identified separatedly with a bandpass filter. Since a thin plate has resonant peaks at natural frequencies, the bandpass filter can be designed to extract the signal of the mode to be identified. Parameters of the second order linear differential equation of the mode can be obtained to apply the Least square method to the extract the modal signal. The proposed identification method is applied to an all-clamped plate with two pairs of piezoelectric actuators and sensors. The outputs of the identified model match with the experimental data well.

  • In this study a computer program is developed for analyzing the elasto-plastic dynamic behaviors of the plate subjected to line-loading by a low-velocity impactor. The equilibrium equation associated with the Hertzian contact law is formulated to evaluate the transient dynamic behaviour of the impacted plate. Compared with an elastic analysis, the effects of material plasticity are presented. Consequently, in the case of elasto-plastic analysys, impulse decreases, displacements increase and contact time duration is longer than the elastic case for same finite element model. And the time variation of the impacting load is not significant due to the plasticity except at the beginning of impact duration, and the induced stresses of the plate are more realistic.

  • The coupled finite/boundary element method is used in numerical analysis for acoustic radiation from the vibration of rectangular composite plate which is simply supported. This analysis is validated using the Wallace equation for an isotropic plate. Active control of sound fields has been tarried out using 3 pairs of piezoelectric sensor/actuator and a pair of viscoelastic material by Passive constrained layer damping treatment. The results show that the optimal placement of piezoelectric sensor/actuator and VE patch is required to control the sound fields from a vibrating composite plate.

  • A new method for free nitration analysis using series functions is proposed to obtain the eigenvalues of arbitrarily shaped, polygonal plates with clamped edges. Since a general solution used in the method satisfies the equation of motion for the transverse vibration of a plate, the method offers very accurate eigenvalues, compared to FEM or BEM results. In addition, the method can minimize the amount of numerical calculation because it has the advantage of not needing to divide the plate of interest. Two case studies show that the proposed method is valid and accurate when the eigenvalues by the proposed method are compared to those by FEM (NASTRAN) or another analytical method.
