Very recently, the cultural pattern of paddy rice in Korea was transitted in a short period, and resulted as earlier in season and more in fertillizer application among others. Specially the weed emergence in paddy fields was drastically increased as affected by change of cultural pattern into early planting and into direct seeding methods. Of course, the direct-seeding in row seeding induced more weeds than in broad-cast direct -seeding. By maintaining the water level with saturation of the paddy surface induced more weeds, relatively more annual weeds than by deep in water level, respectively. Relatively more annuals in number of species and in emerged quantity comparing with perennials was caused by the shifting of cultural methods from transplanting to direct seeding. The severe weed competition damages were mainly resulted due to the shading by taller plant heights of weeds than crop during the whole growing seasons. Conclusively, accepting of direct seeding methods in paddy rice culture in Korea, the present bases for weed control methods ought to be naturally and effectively improved to meet the newly made weed problems.
The experiment was conducted to obtain basic information on occurrence ecology system of Aneilema japonica and to establish its effective control systems in dry seeded rice at National Yeongnam Agricultural Experiment Station in 1995. Total amount of weed in dry seeded rice in the following year('95) as affected by control of barnyardgrass at 70 days after seeding(DAS) in previous year('94) was reduced 47.7% at 30 DAS and 7.8% at 60DAS and also exhibited different weed occurrence as compared with no control plot. Especially in control plot at 60 DAS, occurrence of Echinochloa crus-galli was reduced by 46.9%, But the growth of Aneilema japonica which is one of the problems in weed species was drastically increased by 231 % and Persicaria hydropiper by 11.8%, respectively. Suppressed tillering of rice plant as affected by occurring of A. japonica(300-750 plants/$m^2$) occurred from about 40 DAS and rice grain reduced 74-93% compared with hand weeding due to reduced panicle number. Soil applied Butachlor(EC) at 5 DAS, foliar applied Propanil -Butachlor(EC) at 13 DAS and Lgc 40863+Pendimethalin at 20 DAS were very effective for Aneilema japonica. As considering both weed suppression of Aneilema japonica and yield capacity, middle late foliar application of Lgc 40863+Pendimethalin and systematic application of Butachlor at 5 DAS followed by Propanil/Molinate at 25 DAS were the most effective control systems.

The leaf growth and physiological characteristics of Forsythia saxatilis were investigated at six natural habitats under different light intensities in Bukhansan in order to figure out an appropriate growth environment for conservation and restoration of F. saxatilis that is Korean endemic plant designated as rare and endangered species. Relative light intensities (RLI) at six habitats showed from 10% to 78% of the full sun. Leaf length, leaf width, leaf area and dry leaf weight of population under highest relative light intensity (78%) were the highest. The ratio of dry leaf weight to leaf area increased with the increase of RLI. The content of photosynthetic pigments such as chlorophyll a, b and carotenoid were the highest at 78% of RLI, whereas the ratio of total chlorophyll to carotenoid content reduced according to the increase of RLI. Photosynthetic parameters, such as photosynthetic rate, also increased with the increase of RLI. The total nonstructural carbohydrate (TNC) was 1.5 times higher at 78% of RLI than that at 10% of RLI and the total soluble sugar (TSS) was the highest at 78% of RLI. In conclusion, leaf characteristics and physiological characteristics have high positive correlation with light intensity. Therefore, light condition should be primarily considered to improve growth and physiology characteristics of F. saxatilis under low light intensity.

To develop a natural antimicrobial agent, we investigated the antimicrobial activities of 13 species of edible herbal plant extracts against major Gram-positive foodborne bacteria. Among the 13 screened edible herbal plants, Caesalpinia sappan L. showed the highest antimicrobial activity. In the paper disc agar diffusion assay, Caesalpinia sappan L. extracts had strong antibacterial activities against most Gram-positive bacteria but did not have antibacterial activities against most Gram-negative bacteria. Minimum inhibitory concentrations of the ethanol extract were 0.06 mg/mL against Clostridium difficile and Listeria monocytogenes and 0.03 mg/mL against Staphylococcus aureus. Their inhibitory activities were not reduced by heat treatment or pH adjustment against C. difficile, L. monocytogenes, and S. aureus. Antimicrobial activities were higher in ethanol extract than in distilled water extract. These results support the potential use of Caesalpinia sappan L. ethanol extract as an antimicrobial agent or functional food components against Gram-positive bacteria.

Objectives : Radix Bupleuri is from the dried root of the herb of the Perennial herbaceous plant, Bulpleurum falcatum L. or Bulpleurum chinense DC. or Bulpleurum. scorzonerifolium Willd., family Umbelliferae. Medicinal Properties are bitter and pungent in flavor, slightly cold in nature and attributed to the liver and gallbladder meridians. Actions in modern Materia Medica are regulate the functional relation of internal organs to relieve fever, disperse the stagnated liver-qi and uplift yang-qi to raise sinking. The ‘uplift yang-qi to raise sinking’ efficacy, out of three efficacies (regulate the functional relation of internal organs to relieve fever, disperse the stagnated liver-qi and uplift yang-qi to raise sinking), has been disputed in the medical profession for a long period. Hereupon, this study ascertained the reason why it has been disputed. Methods : With respect to this medicinal herb, the efficacies of regulate the functional relation of internal organs to relieve fever, disperse the stagnated liver-qi and uplift yang-qi to raise sinking were described as to what was written in ‘Shen Nong's Herbal’ from Chin and Han dynasties until Jin and Yuan dynasties. Results : The beginning of Jin and Yuan dynasties, it began to deal with the ‘uplift yang-qi to raise sinking’ efficacy and so it has been carried on modern textbooks and medical books. The reason why it was added is that it was influenced by the theory of ‘Raise Sinking’ advocated by Zhang jieku who lived in the period of Jin and Yuan dynasties. Since then, the properties of ‘Radix Bupleuri’ have been wrongly known to the public. Additionally, ‘Radix Stellariae Seu Gypsophilae’, which was begun to be introduced from the Four Cities since the Five Dynasties, has been combined with the best stuffs of ‘Radix Bupleuri’ produced from Yin Zhou. Consequently, its original properties were remarkably disordered. Likewise, respective medical schools’ theories were changed by the influence of ‘Bulpleurum. scorzonerifolium Willd’ begun to be used since Tang dynasty. Conclusion : it is considered that the current ‘Raise Sinking’ efficacy of Radix Bupleuri is unreasonable to be applied to the efficacy of the whole Radix Bupleuri because it is limited to certain species.

This study was conducted to evaluate the growth rate of landscape trees produced in containers for three year, and the growth rate of the establishment period during sixth month~twelve months after transplanting. Two types of container such as plastic pot(pot) and fabric growing bag(bag) were adopted to restrict tree roots. Each type of container was divided into seven sub-types. One traditional production method was included as comparison. Two landscape woody plant species (Magnolia denudata, Albizzia julibrissin) were planted in the seven sub-types of container. After one or two growing season in the container, the trees of each container type were transplanted. Half of the trees were transplanted in the mild spring season, and the other half were transplanted in the improper summer season. The data was collected on the diameter of root cellar and the tree height in each year. The research results are as follows; 1. Container production method was lower than the traditional production methods by 1.3 times ~ 2 times in the growth rates. 2. The Geocell bag and Root control bag revealed higher growth rates than pp-woven bag. And pot- in-pot(double pot)system revealed higher growth rates than the ether container pot system in A denudata. There were no differences in the growth rates between container production system in Albizzia julibrissin. 3, The growth rates of improper transplanting trees was high in the \"pot\" type - \"bag\" type - \"control\" in descending order. Especially, the growth rates of \"pot\" type revealed higher than \"control\" by 4 times. 4. From the results of ANOVA and Ad hoc test, the variable of growth factors of each container types in improper transplanting experiment was not significant for a range of 5% or 1% level. And the growth rates of traditional production method was lower than the container production method. 5. There was no differences in growth rate between the containerized and the traditional production system in the case of proper transplanting experiment. The growth rates of diameter of root collar was higher in the \"control\". The growth rates of tree height was higher in the \"bag\" type. Finally, based upon the results of this study, subsequent research on the development of container materials and maintaining methods that focused on the growth rates would be required.aintaining methods that focused on the growth rates would be required.
In order to treat of alkaline dye-processing wastewater, alkalophilic strains biodegrading azo dye, Acid red 1, is isolated from natural system, and optimal culture conditions are examined using response surface analysis, statistical analysis system program. 15 different species which grow in alkaline culture media are isolated from the effluent and river soil discharged from wastewater treatment plant in dye industrial complex. One strain which has the best decolorization efficiency is chosen, and named as AR-1. The result of the examination of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus sources which have influence on growth and decolorization reveals that optimum carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus sources are 1.0% fructose, 1.0% polypeptone, 1.0% yeast extract and 0.5% $K_2HPO_4$, respectively. In order to optimize of biodegradation conditions of dye by response surface analysis, the characteristics of decolorization and cell growth according to culture temperature and time are monitered. The result shows that the one is optimum 34.77$^{\circ}C$ for 12.97 hours; the other at 34.73$^{\circ}C$ for 12.96 hours. While, optimal conditions of culture that satisfy both cell growth and decolorization are the temperatures from 32.86$^{\circ}C$ to 36.36$^{\circ}C$ and the period of 10.96 to 15.75 hours, respectively.
Salt marsh is an important transitional zone among terrestrial, riverine, and marine ecosystems and is a productive habitat that interacts extensively with adjacent landscape elements of estuarine and coastal ecosystems. Nowadays, in addition to various human activities, a variety of natural processes induce changes in salt marshes. This study aims to provide background information to restore disturbed salt marshes and to propose their ecological restoration using seed banks. The study area is a prepared area for the Gwangyang Container Port located in the southern Korea. This area was formed by accumulating mud soils dredged from the bottom of the forward sea. This land was created in a serial process of preparing the Gwangyang container port and the salt marsh was passively restored by seeds buried in mud soil dredged from seabed. As a result of stand ordination based on vegetation data collected from the land, stands were arranged according to tolerance to salinity in the order of $Suaeda$$maritima$, $Salicornia$$europaea$, and $Phragmites$$communis$ communities on the Axis 1. Landscape structure of the projected area was analyzed as well. Edges of the projected area were divided from the marginal waterway by the dike. Four types of vegetation appeared on the dike: $Alnus$$firma$ plantation, $Robinia$$pseudoacacia$ plantation, $Lespedeza$$cyrtobotrya$ plantation, and grassland. In the more internal areas, two types of vegetation sequences appeared: $Aster$$tripolium$ community-$Suaeda$$glauca$ community-$Salicornia$$europaea$ community sequence and $Aster$$tripolium$ community-$Suaeda$$maritima$ community-$S.$$europaea$ community sequence. Mixed community showed the highest species diversity (H' = 0.86) and $S.$$europaea$ community showed the lowest (H' = 0.0). Evenness is the highest in Mixed community (J' = 2.26) and the lowest in $S.$$maritime-S.$$europaea$ community (J' = 0.0). Several plant communities were successfully established on the land created by mud soil dredged from the bottom of Gwangyang Bay. Moreover, community diversity in this area approached a similar level with those from other studies involving natural salt marshes. Therefore, restoration effect based on community diversity obtained in our study can be evaluated as a successful achievement. In this respect, although most salt marshes in Korea and other places worldwide have been destroyed or disturbed by excessive land use, feasibility of seed bank as a restoration tool is greatly expected.
Four varieties of tobacco, Nicotiana tabacum var. NC 2326. NC 95, NC 744 and Havana. and two plant species, Physalis floridana Rydb., N. repanda Wild. were used for classification of ten isolates of potato virus Y(PVY) obtained Iron potato or tabacco plants showing various symptoms. Each of the 10 isolates could be distinguished by the host reactions showing necrosis, vein banding and/or mottling, or no symptom on these hosts. Five isolates of PVY, PVY-VN, PVY-N, PVY-NSNR, PVY-Chile, and PVY-Argentina, showed necrotic symptom on NC 2326, but others showed vein handing and/or mottling symptom. On NC95, each of the isolates tested showed similar symptons as on NC2326, except necrotic symptom by the isolate PVY-MSNR. Havana showed mottling reaction to the PVY-NSNR, PVY-MSNR, PVY-MSMR, PVY-VB, and necrosis to PVY-Chile, PVY-Argentina, but showed no symptom to the others. NC744 showed mottling symptom to the PVY-MSNR and PVY-MSMR, necrosis to the PVY-Chile and PVY-Argentina, and no symptom to the others. On N. repanda, necrotic reaction to PVY-Argentina. no symptom to PVY-VN and PVY-C, and nettling to others were observed.
