Objective : For the purpose of developing Verbenaceae plants recorded in Korean Herbology in Korea, the literatures of the successive generations have been thoroughly investigated to prepare this article. Methods : Books and research papers about Herbology which published at Korea and other countries were examined. Results : A list was made about Verbenaceae plant which were cultivated or grew naturally in Korea, after investigated the data on domestic and foreign Verbenaceae plants. Out of those lists, serviceable plants were selected and with those available plants, their distributions were analysed and parts which can be used as medicines were divided into 3 categories such as oriental medicine name, scientific name and non-official name. Verbenaceae's properties flavor, channels they use, effects, and toxicity were also noted. Verbenaceae(grew in Korea) were divided into 5 classes with 21 species. Out of those, 5 classes with 8 species were found serviceable which indicates 40% of all. Out of all 20 species of Verbenaceae family, Callicarpa genus were found 10 species, which were shown the most. Among 3 genus of Vitex species, medicinal plants were all one species each. Out of all serviceable parts in Verbenaceae, Folium parts took first place as 5 species. There are no toxic, the survey said. Conclusion : There were totaled to 5 genera and 21 species in Verbenaceae in Korea and among them medicinal plants are 5 genera, 8 species, some 38% in total.

The purpose of this paper is to build a computer vision system that endows an autonomous mobile robot the ability of automatic measuring of the analog and digital meters installed in nuclear power plant(NPP). This computer vision system takes a significant part in the organization of automatic surveillance and measurement system having the instruments and gadzets in NPP under automatic control situation. In the meter image captured by the camera, the meter area is sorted out using mainly the thresholding and the region labeling and the meter value recognition process follows. The positions and the angles of the needles in analog meter images are detected using the projection based method. In the case of digital meters, digits and points are extracted and finally recognized through the neural network classifier. To use available database containing relevant information about meters and to build fully automatic meter recognition system, the segmentation and recognition of the function-name in the meter printed around the meter area should be achieved for enhancing identification reliability. For thus, the function- name of the meter needs to be identified and furthermore the scale distributions and values are also required to be analyzed for building the more sophisticated system and making the meter recognition fully automatic.
This study aimed to evaluate the anti-atherosclerotic and anti-hypertensive effects of six different plant extracts using a N(G)-nitro-L-arginine-methyl ester (L-NAME)-induced rat model of hypertension. All extracts were administered orally for six weeks. At the end of the study period blood pressure, blood flow, aortic histopathology, and hepatic endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) expression were measured. Subsequently, we also measured the levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species, nitric oxide (NO), and anti-inflammatory cytokines in vitro. Based on these screening results, we selected extracts of Cinnamomum cassia (C. cassia) and Salvia miltiorrhiza (S. miltiorrhiza) for further evaluation. C. cassia and S. miltiorrhiza extracts ameliorated hypertension and atherosclerosis in L-NAME-treated rats in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, a mixture of C. cassia and S. miltiorrhiza had an additive effect to reduce blood pressure, increase blood flow, and normalize aortic tissue. This mixture demonstrated anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory activities in vitro. In conclusion, although further analysis of the therapeutic mechanism is required, the anti-hypertensive and anti-atherosclerotic effects of this mixture are likely mediated by increased eNOS expression, and its anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory activities.
Transient uidA expression was used to optimize parameters required for biolistic transformation of suspension cells of Easter lily, Lilium longiflourm. Maximum uidA expression occurred following bombardment with gold particles as compared to tungsten. A 3hr pre-treatment of suspension cells with 0.125M osmoticum resulted in a 1.5X increase in uidA expression. A helium pressure of 1550 psi combined with a particle travelling distance of 6cm resulted in maximum uidA expression as compared to either 1100, 1200, or 1800 psi. Transient transformation resulted in up to 493 uidA expressing cells/Petri plate. For stable transformation suspension cells of Lilium longiflorum, were co-bombarded with plasmid DNA containing cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) replicase under the rice actin (Act1) promoter and either the bar or PAT genes under the cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV 355) promoter. Ten regenerated plants contained the transgene as analyzed by PCR, and two of the ten plants were confirmed to contain the transgene by Southern hybridization. The two transgenic plants were independent transformants, one containing the bar gene and the other both the CMV replicase and bar genes. Plants were sprayed at the rosette stage and found to be resistant to 1000 mg/L of phosphinothricin (Trade name-Ignite) indicating expression of the bar gene throughout the leaves when bar was under control of the CaMV 35S promoter.
The plant entries in the part of herbs in Ben Cao Gang Muwas classified according to the protocols of Engler and other botanists. Total numbers of plant written in chinese names were 635. Among them only 432 entries were able to be classified by elucidation of several references. They were classified as eight Divisions, 13 Classes, nine Subclasses, 60 Orders, 38 Suborders, 119 Families, 304 Genera, 377 Species with 25 Varieties and one Forma. According to the category of division, the Angiospermae was the largest group of 94 Families, 276 Genera, 348 Species, 24 Varieties and one Forma, whereas only one Genus and one Species belonged to Fungi and the Gymnospermae. Other 203 entries were unable to be classified because of their ambiguities in name.
T. Nakai, who wrote Flora of Koreana vol. II in 1911, cited V. L. Komarov's collections and listed more than 120 specimens with ca. 65 localities. All collection sites cited were described in the Romanized characters based on the Russian pronunciation. Therefore, it is very difficult to pinpoint those sites using the current or old version of Korean map. From this study, many names were reviewed based on other studies (both the Russian version and the Japanese translated version) and records (e.g. specimen label) and presented based on the current provinces with local names, the Chinese character, the GPS data and the first page of citation.
A stem spot disease was observed on Gymnocalycium mihanovichii (Korean name: Bimoran), a scion of graftcactus, in major growing areas of Goyang and Eumseong, Korea during 2008 and 2009. Typical symptoms were initial blackish brown lesions produced mainly on areoles and scars of injured stem tissues, gradually becoming large black spots. A causal organism isolate CD2-7A isolated from the infected stems was identified as Alternaria alternata based on its morphological characteristics and confirmed by the DNA sequencing analysis of ITS, glyceraldehydes-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (gpd), and allergen Alt a1 (Alt a 1) genes. Artificial inoculation of the fungal isolate CD2-7A produced the same rot symptoms on the cactus stems, from which the same fungus was isolated and identified. This is the first report of the black spot caused by A. alternata in the grafted cactus.
A disease of Cyclamen persicum was found in Kangnung of Kang-won prefecture, Korea, 1999. Typical symptoms were dark green to brown lesions appeared on petals and leaves. Many spores appeared on the lesions under humid conditions. A Botrytis species was consistently isolated from the infected plant. Conidia were obvoid to ellipsoid, 1-celled, hyaline or pale brown. The conidia were about 0.9-16.0$\times$6.0-10.4㎛(mean, 1.27$\times$7.8㎛) under scanning electron microscope, many micro-projections appeared on the surface of conidia. The isolated fungus infected heathy Cyclamen persicu. The causal agent was identified as Botrytis cinerea. Gray mold of Cyclamen persicum was proposed to name this disease.
Despite the remarkable advancements of the modern medicine, the traditional system of medicine (TSM) still serves as a potential primary health care modality in the in low- and middle-income countries. The recent reports suggest that there is a renewed interest has been observed towards TSM in the developed countries too, because of the adverse side-effect of modern medicines. Medicinal plants have been widely serving as a rich source of therapeutic agent. Ethiopia is one of the most reserves rich countries in the world. It is renowned for well-diversified and natural resources in terms of its unique flora and fauna. Ethiopian deep-rooted tradition and culture largely depends on the usage of plants for their religious ceremonies, impressive festivals, traditional medicinal uses and other basic necessities. The present scrutiny is an attempt to understand the omnipotent nature of an Ethiopian Ethnomedicinal plant called Tinjute [vernacular name (local native language, Amharic); Otostegia integrifolia]. There are several studies suggest that Tinjute can be used as a natural medicine or health-promoting agents for various disorders and ailments. Nevertheless, in Ethiopia, it is renowned as an insect repellent to drive-away insect vector of diseases, particularly mosquitoes in the early evening. However, there are many more issues and challenges which must be urgently addressed to scientifically formulate various potent, efficacious, safe and highly selective phytotherapeutic agents and insects' repellent from the Tinjute plant in the near future.
Monochoria vaginalis var. angustifolia (Pontederiaceae) was newly found in a furrow in Imha-ri, Boeun-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do for the first time in Korea. This taxon is distinguished from the other species of the genus Monochoria in Korea by having the smallest plant height, very narrow lanceolate leaves, a cuneate leaf base, and raceme with 1 to 2 flowers. A local name was newly given, 'Ga-neun-moul-dal-ge-bi' for the species. The morphological characteristics and illustrations of the taxon as well as photographs at the habitat are provided with a taxonomic key to the species of Monochoria in Korea.
