In this study, the equivalent physical properties of the shield-slot plate that has a lot of very tiny bridge shape structures on its plane were determined by tensile tests and structural analyses. With those results in hand, numerical analyses for the deflection profile by gravity effect were carried out to compare with experimental results. The two results were shown coincident very well so that the estimated equivalent physical properties were verified enough for further studies such as curvature reduction for the shield-slot plate.
This paper aims at the design of high voltage electrode contour under specified field condition. Defining the contour with B-Spline curve, the number of contour variables can be reduced and very smooth electrode can be obtained. For the analysis of the electric field, Surface Charge Method which has advantages in practical model has been used. As an initial contour, the rod-plane gap has been used since the difference between maximum and minimum field value is relatively large. Various field conditions including uniform field condition are given to the end of the rod electrode. Under uniform field condition, authors designed an electrode whose field-deviation was under 0.5%. Finally, the relation between the curvature and field of the electrode has been checked, which showed that B-Spline curve is appropriate for the shape function.
This paper presents a preliminary study to monitor the lateral behavior of pile foundation using multiplexed fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. In the preliminary study, an 1.7 meter long cantilever beam with the shape of square hollow box was fabricated and tested under the static loading. Four FBG sensors were multiplexed in a single optical fiber and installed into the top and bottom of the cantilever beam. The strains are directly measured from FBG sensors followed by curvature calculations based on the plane section assumption. Vertical deflections are then estimated using the regression analyses based on the geometric relationships. It has been found that excellent correlation with conventional sensing system was observed. The success of the test encourages the use of the FBG sensing system as a monitoring system for pile foundations. However, further consideration should be given in the case of the sensor malfunction for the practical purpose.
The spatially coupled buckling, in-plane, and lateral bucking analyses of thin-walled Timoshenko curved beam with non-symmetric, double-, and mono-symmetric cross-sections resting on elastic foundation are performed based on series solutions. The stiffness matrices are derived rigorously using the homogeneous form of the simultaneous ordinary differential equations. The present beam formulation includes the mechanical characteristics such as the non-symmetric cross-section, the thickness-curvature effect, the shear effects due to bending and restrained warping, the second-order terms of semitangential rotation, the Wagner effect, and the foundation effects. The equilibrium equations and force-deformation relationships are derived from the energy principle and expressions for displacement parameters are derived based on power series expansions of displacement components. Finally the element stiffness matrix is determined using force-deformation relationships. In order to verify the accuracy and validity of this study, the numerical solutions by the proposed method are presented and compared with the finite element solutions using the classical isoparametric curved beam elements and other researchers' analytical solutions.
A steel slit shear wall has vertical slits and when it is under lateral loads, the section between these slits has double-curvature deformation, and by forming a flexural plastic hinge at the end of the slit, it dissipates the energy on the structure. In this article, Experimental, numerical and analytical analyses are performed to study the effect of slit shape and edge stiffener on the behavior of steel slit shear wall. Seismic behavior of three models with different slit shapes and two models with different edge stiffener shapes are studied and compared. Hysteresis curves, energy dissipation, out of plane buckling, initial stiffness and strength are discussed and studied. The proposed slit shape reduces the initial stiffness, increases the strength and energy dissipation. Also, edge stiffener shape increases the initial stiffness significantly.
Twisted magnetic flux tubes (also called magnetic flux ropes) are believed to play a crucial role in solar eruptive phenomena. The evolution of a single flux rope with or without the influence of an overlying field of a simple geometry has been extensively studied and its physics is rather well understood. Observations show that interacting flux tubes are often involved in solar eruptions. It was Lau and Finn (1996) who intensively studied the interaction between two flux ropes, whose footpoints are anchored in two parallel planes. In this too simplified setting, the curvature of the flux rope axial fields is totally ignored. In our study, the footpoints of flux ropes are placed in a single plane containing a polarity inversion line as in the real solar active region. Our simulation study is performed for four cases: (1) co-axial field and co-axial current (co-helicity), (2) counter-axial field and co-axial current (counter-helicity), (3) co-axial field and counter-axial current (counter-helicity), and (4) counter-axial field and counter-axial current (co-helicity). Except case 3, each case is found to be related with certain eruptive features.
In this paper, we consider the problem of finding the hypersurface Mn in the Euclidean (n + 1)-space ℝn+1 that satisfies an equation of mean curvature type, called singular minimal hypersurface equation. Such an equation physically characterizes the surfaces in the upper half-space ℝ+3 (u) with lowest gravity center, for a fixed unit vector u ∈ ℝ3. We first state that a singular minimal cylinder Mn in ℝn+1 is either a hyperplane or a α-catenary cylinder. It is also shown that this result remains true when Mn is a translation hypersurface and u is a horizantal vector. As a further application, we prove that a singular minimal translation graph in ℝ3 of the form z = f(x) + g(y + cx), c ∈ ℝ - {0}, with respect to a certain horizantal vector u is either a plane or a α-catenary cylinder.

Objective : To understand the anatomic characteristics of the aortic arch (AA) and its major branches to build a foundation toward performing endovascular surgery safely. Methods : A total of 25 formalin fixed Korean adult cadavers were used. The authors investigated : anatomical variations of the AA and its major branches; curvature of the AA; distance from the mid-vertebrae line to the origin of the major branches; distances from the origin of the major branches of AA to the origin of its distal branches; and the angle of the three major branches, the brachiocephalic trunk (BCT), the left common carotid artery (LCCA) and the left subclavian artery (LSCA) arising from AA. Results : The three major branches directly originated from AA in 21 (84%) of the cadavers. In two (8%) of remaining four cadavers. orifice of LCCA was slightly above the stem of BCT. In remaining two (8%) cadavers, the left vertebral artery (LVA) was directly originated from AA. Average angle of AA curvature to the coronal plane was 62.2 degrees. BCT originated 0.92 mm on the right of the mid-vertebrae line. LCCA and LSCA originated from 12.3 mm and 22.8 mm on the left of the mid-vertebrae line. Mean distance from the origin of the BCT to the origin of the RCCA was 32.5 mm. Mean distance from the origin of the LSCA to the origin of the LVA was 33.8 mm. Average angles at which the major branches arise from the AA were 65.3, 46.9 and 63.8 degrees. Conclusion : This study may provides a basic anatomical information to catheterize AA and its branches for safely performing endovascular surgery.
