  • Bi-directional loading test data are available to evaluate the design parameters which reflect the characteristics of a construction method and the variations of ground at the site where drilled shafts are installed. The method to obtain the design parameters of a real bridge by hi-directional loading test was introduced. The plans of multi-level testing and installation of measuring instruments should be made according to the rough estimation of axial bearing capacity, the length of pile, and the construction method. While the relationship between end bearing resistance and displacement was obtained directly from the hi-directional loading test, the relationship between unit side resistance and displacement was calculated through the measuring values. 1% displacement of pile diameter was adopted as the criteria of failure for ultimate resistance. As the settlement of pile head at the total ultimate bearing capacity obtained from these method was less than 1.5 % of pile diameter, this method was conservative to use in the field.

  • Despite of the increasing number of the application of the drilled shaft pile in construction site, most of the study of pile capacity has been centered side shear resistance. But it is common that the drilled shaft is socketed on the rock so as to use the bearing resistance, so prediction of the toe's movement and characteristic of the bearing capacity is important as the side shear resistance. Therefore the model tests were performed in order to study the characteristic of bearing capacity on rock mass. The material of the test blocks were the mortar which was mixed with sand, cement and water, and test block size was $240{\times}240{\times}240mm$. Load was pressed by the 45mm of diameter of miniaturized pile and plate jack and steal plate were used to the confined stress for representing the underground condition. The relation of load-displacement was measured in many different conditions of rock mass such as direction of discontinuities, spacing and strength, and q-w curves of the toe of the pile were verified in each condition.

  • The main characteristics of PHC piles is that silica material and autoclave curing technique are used when manufacturing to have higher strength than PC piles. In this paper, pile drivability and bearing capacity characteristics of the PHC piles are studied through numerical analysis based on wave propagation theory, driving records and pile load tests in situ. It is found that we can have higher bearing capacity by using the PHC piles rather than the PC on condition that the most effective driving equipment is chosen when driving the pile. In other words, since the PHC piles have higher resistance to driving energy, the heavier ram can be used in the driving process, which results in the higher bearing capacity.

  • Among soft ground improvement methods by using granular material, the sand compaction pile method has been widely utilized in Korea, but, as a result of shortage and increase of unit price of sand, a necessity of an alternative method has been required. In this study, a series of in-situ static load tests for crushed-stone compaction piles were performed. Pile diameter was fixed to 700mm and areas of loading plates were changed. The static load tests were performed for area replacement ratios of 20, 30 and 40% respectively. Based on the test results, bearing capacity of single crushed-stone compaction pile was estimated. It showed that the settlement decreases as the replacement ratio increases. Also, a yielding capacity equation of the crushed-stone compaction pile considering replacement ratio was suggested.

  • The reliable estimation of pile bearing capacity is essential for the improvement of the re- liability and the cost-effectiveness of the design. There have been numerous pile bearing capacity prediction methods proposed up to now, however, execpt for the estimation made from the result of the pile loading test, not one method is appropriate for the reliable prediction. Due to the considerable time and expenses required to carry out the pile loading test, the test has seldom been utilized. The development of Simple Pile Loading Test(SPLT) which utilizes the pile skin friction as the required reaction force to cause the pile tip settlement, provides a solution to perform more pile loading tests and consequently a more economical pile design is possible. The separate measurement of skin friction and tip resistance during the course of performing SPLT provides a better understanding of the pile behavior than the result of the conventional pile loading test where only the total resistance is measured. On the other hand, there are some points to be clarified in order to apply the test results of SPLT to practical problem. They are the direction of the applied load to mobilize the skin friction and the use of reduced sized sliding core. In this research, both the SPLT and the conventional pile loading test on 406mm diameter steel pipe pile have been performed. From the result, it would be safe to use the measured SPLT skin friction value directly in the design, since the value is somewhat lower than the value measured in the conventional test. It is further assumed that the tip resistance value of the reduced sized sliding core should properly be analysed by taking the incluonce of scale effect into consideration.

  • One of the construction methods applied as a pier foundation type is a single type cast-in-place pile. In applying a pile bent system as a foundation type, the main concern in designing can be said to secure the lateral bearing capacity of pile structure in system. In addition, to increase the rigidity of the pile structure, a method of increasing the lateral bearing capacity by reinforcing the pile structure with a casing has been used. However, although the reinforcing effect and appropriate reinforcing length of casing may vary depending on the soil conditions, there is insufficient studies on this, and for this reason, the entire pile structure in a pile bent system is reinforced with a casing, in the field. In addition, if the length of the entire pile is reinforced with a casing, it may lead to delays in construction and increase in construction costs. That is, in order to more effectively reinforce the pile structure with a casing, it is necessary to study the lateral bearing characteristics of the reinforced pile structure in system. And it should be determined the appropriate reinforcing length of the casing from the evaluated bearing characteristics. Therefore, in this study, the lateral bearing characteristics of piles applied with the reinforcing length of casing for each condition were evaluated through a numerical analysis. And, based on the analysis results, the appropriate reinforcing length of casing was proposed. As a result of the study, it was found that in order to effectively increase the lateral bearing capacity of pile structure, the reinforcing length of casing should be applied twice the influence range of the bending behavior of the pile, 1/β.

  • The equation of end bearing capacity is applied differently depending on the type of pile, construction method, and load characteristics considering the construction standards. The bearing capacity equation of the design standard is presented in various ways according to the design conditions such as construction method and ground condition, etc. but, It does not reflect the ground strength according to the SPT-N value of weathered rock. This study analyzed the trend of allowable tip bearing capacity by pile diameter through about 480 dynamic loading tests conducted for the construction/quality management of piles for the last 6 years since 2015. The equation for the ultimate end bearing capacity per unit area according to the SPT-N value is presented. The proposed formula of ultimate end bearing capacity per unit area can be applied in the range of 15,000kN/m2 to 30,000kN/m2. The proposed formula, which complements the existing formula, enables pile design and construction/quality management.

  • Sand drain as a vertical drainage is widely used in soft ground improvement Recently, sand, the principal source of sand drain, is running out. The laboratory model tests were carried out to utilize gravel as a substitute for sand. Though which the characteristics of gravel are compared to those of sand for engineering purpose. Two cylindrical containers for the model test were filled with marine clayey soil from the west coast of Korea with a column in the center, one with sand, the other with gravel. Vibrating wire type piezometers were installed at the distance of 1.0D, 1.5D and 2.0D from the center of the column. The characteristics of consolidation were studied with data obtained from the measuring instrument place on the surface of the container. The parameter study was performed on the marine clayey soil before and after the test in order to verify the effectiveness of the improvement. The clogging effect was checked at various depth in gravel column after the test. In-situ tests area was divided into two areas by material used. One is Sand Drain(SD) and Sand Compaction Pile(SCP) area, the other is Gravel Drain(GD) and Gravel Compaction Pile(GCP) area. Both areas were monitored to obtain the information on settlement, pore water pressure and bearing capacity by measuring instruments for stage loading caused by embankment. The results of measurements were analyzed. According to the test results, the settlement was found to be smaller in gravel drain than in sand drain. The increase in bearing capacity by gravel pile explains the result. The clogging effect was not found in gravel column. It is assumed that gravel is relatively acceptable as a drainage material. Gravel is considered to be a better material than sand for bearing capacity, and it is found that bearing capacity is larger when gravel is used as a gravel compaction pile than as a gravel drain.

  • Application of Limit State Design in geotechnical engineering has become world-widely popular. While LRFD code in the North America presents geotechnical load and resistance factors, the values of resistance factors proposed by these methods are still unstable with limited application. CPT has been widely used for the pile design and various methods have been proposed to estimate the bearing capacity of piles. In this paper, resistance factors for representative pile design methods based on CPT results are evaluated. Field pile load test and CPT results were collected and analyzed in order to obtain necessary statistical data and resistance factors. Resistance factors of the base, shaft, and total capacity are estimated. From fisrt order second moment (FOSM) analysis, resistance factors of $0.30{\sim}0.55$ are estimated for total load capacity.
