This paper covers the design and implementation process of RF hypertermia system for cancer therapy. Among many hyperthermic methods, RF capacitive heating method is discussed because it can heat the deep-seated tumors selectively. The RF power oscillator and its applicators were designed and implemented. And the experiments were performed with agar phantom and dog to prove that the system can heat any depth selectively. And the electrical safety and appropriateness of clinical application was proved through the human living-body test.
Recently, a new tailored RF gradient echo (TRFGE) sequence was reported. This technique not only enhances the magnetic susceptibility effect but also allows us to measure local changes in brain oxygenation. In this study, a phantom and cat brain experiments were performed on a 4.7 Tesla BIQSPEC (BRUKER) instrument with a 26 cm gradient system. We have demonstrated that the signal intensity (SI) of the TRFGE sequence varies according to the concentration of susceptibility contrast agent. Three capillary tubes with different concentrations of Gd-DTPA (0.01, 0.05, 0.1 mMOI/l) were placed at the middle of a cylindrical water phantom. Using both TRFGE and conventional gradient echo (CGE) sequences, phantom images of the slices which contain all three tubes were obtained. For the animal experiment, cats were anesthetized and ventilated using halotane (0.5%) and a $N_2O/ O_2$ mixture (2:1), and blood pressure and heart rate were monitored and kept normal. For the observation of tue first pass of Gd- DTPA, imaging was started at t = 0. At t = 8 ~ 12s, 0.2 mMol/Kg Gd-DTPA was manually injected in the femoral vein. The imaging parameters were TRITE = 25/10 msec, flip angle = $30^{\circ}$, FOV = 10cm, image matrix size = $128{\times}128$ with 64 phase encodings and the image data acquisition window was 10 msec. SI-time curves were then obtained from a series of 30 images which were collected at 2 sec intervals using both CGE and TRFGE pulse sequences before, during, and following the contrast injection.
Pediatric head and neck phantom, using the rate by focusing distance and grid images, Image J using the Quality Assessment and Dose Area Product compared. X-ray laboratory equipment due to the Philips Digital DIAGNOST a 110 cm FFD set and using ACE Non-grid, focusing distance 110 cm (12 : 1), 140 cm (12 : 1), 180 cm (8 : 1) Focused grid, Acryl Phantom (Fluke Model 76-2 Series Phantom) 15.24 cm, by resolution chart image acquisition, image evaluation program (Image J Ver. 1.4.3.67, USA) imaging experiments were analyzed using. Dose Area Product in the Non Grid 0.028 $mGy{\cdot}cm^2$, focusing distance 110 cm (12 : 1), the 0.129 $mGy{\cdot}cm^2$, 140 cm (12 : 1), the 0.135 $mGy{\cdot}cm^2$, 180 cm (8 : 1) was measured with a 0.110 $mGy{\cdot}cm^2$ Non Grid, focusing distance 110 cm (12 : 1), 140 cm (12 : 1), 180 cm (8 : 1) Image obtained when grid using the image J program focusing distance 110 cm with grid based on the measured SNR and PSNR Non Grid if the SNR the 17.307 dB, PSNR of the 20.002 dB, if the SNR 28.755 dB, PSNR was measured by the 31.451 dB. Image J image analysis through the streets, rather than focusing on grid by the rate that could see an increase in dose. Select the grid by a small dose rate reduction is possible.
The present study made a phantom for gamma ray of 140 keV radiated from $^{99m}Tc$, examined shielding effect of lead by thickness of the shielding material, and measured surface dose and depth dose by body depth. The OSL Nano Dot dosimeter was inserted at 0, 3, 15, 40, 90, and 180 mm depths of the phantom, and when there was no shield, 0.2 mm lead shield, 0.5 mm lead shield, The depth dose was measured. Experimental results show that the total cumulative dose of dosimeters with depth is highest at 366.24 uSv without shield and lowest at 94.12 uSv with 0.5 mm lead shield. The shielding effect of 0.2 mm lead shielding was about 30.18% and the shielding effect of 0.5 mm lead shielding was 74.30%, when the total sum of the accumulated doses of radiation dosimeter was 100%. The phantom depth and depth dose measurements showed the highest values at 0 mm depth for all three experiments and the dose decreases as the depth increases. This study proved that the thicker a shielding material, the highest its shielding effect is against gamma ray of 140 keV. However, it was known that shielding material can't completely shield a body from gamma ray; it reached deep part of a human body. Aside from the International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU) recommending depth dose by 10 mm in thickness, a plan is necessary for employees working in department of nuclear medicine where they deal with gamma ray, which is highly penetrable, to measure depth dose by body depth, which can help them manage exposed dose properly.
The patient dose incurred from diagnostic procedures during advanced radiotherapy has become an important issue. Many researchers in medical physics are using computational simulations to calculate complex parameters in experiments. However, extended computation times make it difficult for personal computers to run the conventional Monte Carlo method to simulate radiological images with high-flux photons such as images produced by computed tomography (CT). To minimize the computation time without degrading imaging quality, we applied a deterministic adaptation to the Monte Carlo calculation and verified its effectiveness by simulating CT image reconstruction for an image evaluation phantom (Catphan; Phantom Laboratory, New York NY, USA) and a human-like voxel phantom (KTMAN-2) (Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, NM, USA). For the deterministic adaptation, the relationship between iteration numbers and the simulations was estimated and the option to simulate scattered radiation was evaluated. The processing times of simulations using the adaptive method were at least 500 times faster than those using a conventional statistical process. In addition, compared with the conventional statistical method, the adaptive method provided images that were more similar to the experimental images, which proved that the adaptive method was highly effective for a simulation that requires a large number of iterations-assuming no radiation scattering in the vicinity of detectors minimized artifacts in the reconstructed image.
This study analyzed dose reduction and quality of images through dose reduction tools and shielding board to protect sensitive eye lens in radiation during orbit CT examinations for clinical data use. During CT scans of the phantom, surface dose (CT scanner dosimetry phantom, ion chamber-3 times) and quality of image (radiosurgery head phantom, visual assessment-2 times, HU standard deviation) were evaluated using X-care which is dose reduction tools and bismuth shielding board. The results of experiments of eight conditions showed a relatively reduced dose in all other conditions compared to when no conditions were set. In particular, the area corresponding to the ophthalmic part reduced the surface dose by up to 45.7 %. The visual evaluation of images by specialists and the quality evaluation of images analyzed by HU standard deviation were clinically closest to the use of X-care and shielding board (1 cm in height). Therefore, it is believed that the use of shielding board in a suitable location with dose reduction tools while investigating the optimal radiation dose will reduce the exposure dose of sensitive lens at radiation while maintaining the quality of the images with high diagnostic value.
Thyroid uptake measurements can be subject to measurement errors due to the scoping and positioning of the thyroid gland. To compensate for these limitations, the clinical utility of the thyroid simultaneous counting method as an alternative to thyroid uptake measurement was analyzed and evaluated experimentally through quantitative analysis of images acquired after thyroid scanning. Experimental data were obtained using a Gamma camera (GE infinia), a thyroid uptake system (KOROID 1), and a thyroid neck phantom. Based on the thyroid uptake rate of 1-5% according to the protocol of thyroid scan test (99mTcO4 - , 370 MBq) in normal results, 99mTcO4 - was set in the range of 3.7-18.5 MBq (Matrix: 256×256, Scan time: 1 min, collimator: pin hole, phantom-collimator distances: 7 cm). The acquired images were corrected for the attenuation of isotopes due to the set-up time and half-life by applying the Auto Region of interest (ROI) drawing system, and the significance of the experimental results was evaluated by Multiple linear regression analysis (SPSS, ver. 22, IBM). The thyroid uptake rate showed a significant correlation between the dose and the measured counts when using the thyroid uptake system equipment. Meanwhile, the quantitative analysis counts of phantom images using Gamma camera also showed a significant correlation. Thus confirmed that the correlation between these two experiments was statistically significant (P<0.05). The simultaneous counting protocol, which indirectly measures thyroid uptake from thyroid scans, is likely to be clinically relevant if complemented by additional studies with different variables in patients with thyroid disease.
This paper addresses the assessment methods used to evaluate the magnetic exposure of a human to ELF EMF (Extremely Low Frequency Electromagnetic Field) which is caused by the process of power delivery from 60 Hz commercial power. These days the main concern is primarily focused on the magnetic field. For the exposure assessment, both numerical studies and laboratory experiments were studied and the results of the two compared for methodological suitability. The numerical analyses employ the Impedance Method (IM), Boundary Element Method (BEM), and Finite Element Method (FEM) and the laboratory experiments used various human phantom models made with conductivities congruent to human organs and then exposed to uniform/non-uniform magnetic fields to produce eddy currents. Under these conditions a number of examples have been evaluated and the reliability assessed to present the pros and cons of each methodology.
AEC was designed to assist in the production of radiographs of equal density and to aid in the production f consistently high quality radiographs. Many improvements have been made in the AEC and these have helped to increase it's acceptance. Newer system (Falling load) control kVp and mA as well as exposure time. Authors have had experiments about the characteristics of AEC by Zone System. Zone System is the method to detection of photographic image qualify by control the photo print from Fred Archer and Ansel Adams. With the Zone System theory the experiments of density control, characteristics of phantom thickness and reproducibility of occupation rate of contrast media could make quality control of X-ray photography effectively in falling load system.
In many semi-empirical analyses of flow boiling heat transfer, an annular flow is often assumed as a model flow and the local liquid film thickness is a key parameter in the analysis. This work considers a simple electrical conductance technique to estimate the local liquid film thickness in two-phase annular flows. In this approach, many electrodes are mounted flush with the inner wall of the pipe. Voltage differences between two neighboring electrodes for concentric annular flows with various liquid film thicknesses are obtained before the main experiments and logged in a look-up table. For an actual application in the annual flow, voltage differences of neighboring electrodes are measured and then corresponding local film thicknesses are determined by the interpolation of the look-up table. Even though the proposed technique is quite simple and straightforward, the numerical and static phantom experiments support its usefulness.
