  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the sales area of gas stations to see the quality and the efficiencies of spatial distribution structure for petroleum products in Tae-jeon City. Location pattern of gas station is classified by factors of competitive facilities, transportation, population and landuse in Tae-jeon City. As a result, High profit pattern and low profit pattern is classified. The characteristics of the distribution pattern of gas station are that the while densely populated has a small sales area, the thinly populated region has huge ones. Location-allocation model is used in order to minimize the travel distance from consumer location to gas station and balance the spatial distribution of gas station in case studies. The result reveals that the model-based locations of gas stations are more dispersed and balanced in the whole Tae-jeon City compared with the actual location of gas stations. This study shows the characteristics and spatial distribution patterns of sales area and location in petroleum products distribution facilities.

  • The vehicle lubricant occupies upto 35% in a total lubricant market and engine oil occupies upto 77% in the vehicle lubricant market in Korea. A suitable quality management of the circulating engine oil is necessary for driver and engine protection. But, KS and synthetic engine oil products (involved over 30% synthetic oil) are exempt to any quality management under Petroleum and Alternative Fuel Business Act. It is also known that synthetic oils such as PAO (poly alpha olefin) have excellent properties and performance like anti-wear, varnish control and oxidation stability than those of mineral oils. For this reason, PAO has been used for an engine oil, rotary screw and reciprocating compressor in addition to heavy duty and other extreme service applications. In this study, our research group analyzed the chromatogram pattern for the mineral oil, PAO and mineral oil involved a typical ratio of PAO using SIMDIST (simulated distillation). In the SIMDIST chromatogram, the mineral oil showed a broad peak, while PAO showed a sharp typical peak. Also the oil with a large viscosity grade exhibited a long retention time due to the heavy molecular weight and high boiling point. In particular, the blended mineral oil with 20% PAO sample showed a distinctly different pattern compared to that of using the conventional mineral oil. For monitoring PAO contents in distributing engine oils, we analyzed the SIMDIST for 27 kinds of engine oils which were popularly sold in Korea. The analytic results indicate that all kinds of engine oils showed that PAO contents were below 20% in engine oil products. Moreover, the PAO titled product was found to have a small amount of PAO. Thus, we conclude that the related laws for the proper quality management of synthetic oils are needed to be established.

  • Contamination of soil and groundwater by the compounds of hydrocarbon petroleum has been widely accepted as the main cause that harms the environments and health. To remove those pollutants, absorbing clothes, activated carbons, or oil-water separation devices with the gravity method are employed for treatment. However, those materials and devices cannot remove the emulsion pollutants despite of their efficiency for removing free products. Therefore, we investigated the problems which occur during the groundwater treatment for the highly concentrated suspended solid particles, which can be resulted from excavation, and to propose methods to remove TPH(Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon). After coagulation experiment with high molecular polymers, the concentration of SS(Suspended Solids) and COD(Chemical Oxygen Demand) turned to satisfy the groundwater quality criteria within 5 minutes while the concentration of TPH failed to meet the water quality standard of effluent. Consequently, the water quality criteria for effluent could not be met by single DAF(Dissolved Air Flotation) process. However all water quality criteria could be satisfied after 20 minutes when coagulation reactions are carried out simultaneously in the DAF reactor.

  • In order to prevent decay, distortion, bending, twist on wood products such as wooden furnitures, variety of coating materials were developed and used so far. The coating materials for wood finishing can be synthesized by natural resource or petroleum. However, these coating materials can cause contamination of indoor air quality due to emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this study, commercialized coating materials for wood finishing such as varnish, coat, and stain were evaluated on emission characteristics of VOCs. Among the varnish, eco-friendly products had about 15~46% lower TVOC emission ($1,042{\mu}g/m^2h{\sim}3,257{\mu}g/m^2h$, respectively, than typical product ($7,100{\mu}g/m^2h$). Natural resource based coating material showed lowest TVOC emission level. However, one of natural resource based waterborne stain showed higher TVOC emission level because waterborne stain already contained higher amount of natural VOC. Oil-based stain might not be suitable for indoor use on interior wall and furniture due to exceed amount of TVOC. Based on results, natural resource based coat or waterborne stain are recommenced to use on wood products.

  • Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) converts synthesis gas (CO and $H_2$) into longer chain hydrocarbons by a surface polymerization reaction. Cobalt- or iron-based catalysts normally show excellent activity for syngas conversion to petroleum products leading to super clean diesel fuels. The catalytic activities of the catalysts in FTS depend on the number of active sites on the surface. The number of active site was determined by the active metal particle size, loading amount, reduction degree and support-active metal interaction. The investigation adopts new methodology in preparing FT catalyst, which contains the controlled synthesis of active metal. The main focus of this paper is to give an overview of the types of catalysts, also including their preparation and reduction; the types of FT reactors; and also including the reaction conditions.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the slurping process affecting the variation of free product and VOCs concentration and the bioaugmentation effect on bioremediation process. Free products and soil gas were extracted from 30 extraction wells installed in a petroleum contaminated area. The extraction system was operated for 10 hours per day with 1 hour on-and-off mode. The thickness of free product in extraction well was decreased from 11.7 cm to 4.5 cm and the VOCs concentration was increased from 10.37 ppm to 30.78 ppm during the operation period. After the slurping process for 2 months, contaminated soil was treated with bioremediation process in 2 cells, $15{\times}40$ m, biologically enhanced with adjusting oxygen, moisture and nutrients concentration. Total 1,400 L of microbial inoculant, Naturesys. (Dong Myung Ent. Co.) was added to the pile B, which has an outstanding ability for degrading petroleum hydrocarbons. The results showed that bioremediaton effect in soil with the microorganisms solution is 33% higher than that in soil with only residual bacteria.

  • The distribution of basic nitrogen-containing compounds in three vacuum gas oils (VGOs) with different boiling ranges and their dewaxed oils from the lube base oil refining unit of a refinery were characterized by positive-ion electrospray ionization (ESI) Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). It turned out that the composition of basic nitrogen compounds in the samples varied significantly in DBE and carbon number, and the dominant basic N-containing compounds in these oil samples were N1 class species. $N_1O_1$, $N_1O_2$, and $N_2$ class species with much lower relative abundance were also identified. The composition of basic nitrogen compounds in VGOs and dewaxed VGOs were correlated with increased boiling point and varied in DBE and carbon numbers. The comparison of the analytical results between VGOs and dewaxed VGOs indicated that more basic N-containing compounds in VGO with low carbon number and small molecular weight tend to be removed by solvent refining in lube base oil processing.

  • Microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) is one of the most economical and efficient methods for extending the life of production wells in a declining reservoir. Microbial consortia from Wafra oil wells and Suwaihat production water, Al-Wusta region, Oman were screened. Microbial consortia in brine samples were identified using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and 16S rRNA gene sequences. The detected microbial consortia of Wafra oil wells were completely different from microbial consortia of Suwaihat formation water. A total of 33 genera and 58 species were identified in Wafra oil wells and Suwaihat production water. All of the identified microbial genera were first reported in Oman, with Caminicella sporogenes for the first time reported from oil fields. Most of the identified microorganisms were found to be anaerobic, thermophilic, and halophilic, and produced biogases, biosolvants, and biosurfactants as by-products, which may be good candidates for MEOR.

  • The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the characteristics of Korean petroleum and petrochemical industries and the change of participation in global value chains. Since 1960s, Korean petroleum and petrochemical industries have been developed under government's industrial policies. In 1980s Korean petroleum and petrochemical industries served as a key export-oriented industry) of Korea's national economic development. Based on the expansion of large-scale production facilities led by the private sectors from the end of 1980s, Korea became as a major country in the global petroleum and petrochemical industries. Under Korean domestic scale, it shows considerable spatial concentration, in Ulsan Metropolitan City, Yeosu City and Seosan City. However, the degree of spatial concentration is differentiated along the each sectors within the petroleum and petrochemical industry. To improve regional industry competitiveness, each region has adopted different strategies and shifted to structural upgrading and producting high value-added products. Changes in the structure within petroleum and the petrochemical industries at the national level caused a change in the structure of Korea's participation in GVC, but the domestic value-added is lower than that of its major competitors.

  • To investigate the characteristics of pyrolysis for LDPE, LLDPE and HDPE, the low temperature pyrolysis was carried out in the range of 425 to $500^{\circ}C$ for 35 to 65 min. The liquid products formed during pyrolysis were classified into gasoline, kerosene, light oil and wax according to the distillation temperatures based on the petroleum product quality standard of Korea Petroleum Quality Inspection Institute. TGA experiments for three PE samples showed that the onset temperature of pyrolysis increased with increasing heating rate, and the onset temperature of pyrolysis at a fixed heating rate was in the order of LDPE$475^{\circ}C$. Yields of gasoline and kerosene were highest at $450^{\circ}C$, 65 min and decreased slightly at above $475^{\circ}C$.
