Objective: Written information could be helpful for senior population to adhere to complex medication therapies, but must be well prepared and empirically assessed to achieve such end. We purposed to develop a drug information leaflet for senior citizens by applying 'performance-based user-testing.' Methods: We employed a user-testing, a mixed method to figure difficulties out with patients' leaflets from the user perspective. The cycle made of test and revision can be repeated as necessary. We recruited senior citizens with age of 65 or above who were taking antihypertensive medications at the point of participating and excluded the elderly who suffered illiteracy. We firstly rectified a drug information leaflet of antihypertensive medications for the general public distributed by the Korean authority based on focus group interviews (9 participants). The revised leaflets were tested four times with 8~12 participants in each round (40 seniors in total). We targeted to develop a leaflet which more than 80% of participants understood 10 key information. Main outcomes measures were to be able to find information and be able to understand information. This study was approved by the Yeungnam University Research Ethics Committee. Results: Focus group interviews identified difficulties with small font of words, professional language, long information, and a poor structure. The leaflet was revised and in the first round questionnaire found problems with 4/10 information points; interviews disclosed all but one (normal blood pressure range) were ill-understood. The second round questionnaire and interview found fewer problems but the comprehensiveness of participants was still poor in several points. For the third and fourth rounds we revised the leaflets in the individual-targeted manner. Finally, the fourth round showed all key information found and understood by at least 80% of participants except one question about drug name. Conclusion: The drug leaflets need to be developed in a personalized mode for the seniors. There was a limit for Korean seniors to understand nonproprietary name of their drugs because they used to producers' trade names which the Korean health system predominantly works with.
Objective: The study purpose was to develop a drug information leaflet for the elderly and to evaluate it with performance-based user-testing. Methods: We performed a stratified randomized controlled trial. We recruited 62 elderly patients with age of 65 or above who were taking antidiabetic medications at the point of participating and excluded those who suffered illiteracy. We randomly allocated them into the intervention group with a leaflet for the elderly and the control group with a leaflet for the general public. Main outcome measures were to 'be able to find information' and to 'be able to understand information.' We measured outcome variables by employing performance-based user-testing and analyzed data to find any differences between two groups with t-tests, chi-squared tests or Fisher's exact tests accordingly. Results: More participants in the intervention group understood how to store their medications than those in the control group (intervention group 93% vs. control group 70%; p=0.02). There were no significant differences in other information items between two groups. Mostly 'being able to understand information' was lower than 'being able to find information.' The gaps between two outcome variables were about 10% in the intervention group and about 18% in the control group. The lowest understanding was observed in information relating to drug names and their potential adverse events. Conclusion: Without providing personalized drug information, it might be hard for the elderly to improve their drug knowledge even with leaflets that were developed specifically for the elderly.
Graphical user interface testing (GUI testing) techniques have been widely used to test the functionality of Android applications (apps) and to detect faults for verification of the reliability and usability of apps. To adequately test the behaviors of apps, a number of studies on model-based GUI testing techniques have been performed on Android apps. However, the effectiveness of model-based techniques greatly depends on the quality of the GUI model, because model-based GUI testing techniques generate test inputs based on this model. Therefore, in order to improve testing effectiveness in model-based techniques, accurate and efficient GUI model generation has to be achieved using an improved model generation technique with concrete definition of GUI states. For accurate and efficient generation of a GUI model and test inputs, this study suggests a hierarchical GUI state comparison technique and evaluates this technique through comparison with the existing model-based techniques, considering activities as GUI states. Our results show that the proposed technique outperforms existing approaches and has the potential to improve the performance of model-based GUI testing techniques for Android apps.
Objective: This study aimed to explore the readability and comprehensibility of the drug information on a patient leaflet for the senior by employing performance-based user-testing. Methods: We included 36 elderly (65 years old or older) as the senior group (intervention group) and 36 adults (40~59 years old) as the adult group (control). We developed a questionnaire to test if participants could access to drug information. After completing a questionnaire, the participant was interviewed about their understanding over the patient leaflet. We performed t-test, ${\chi}^2$-test or Fisher's exact test to examine differences between two groups in primary outcomes. Results: The senior were less likely able to find information (78%) than the adult (91%); they were much less likely able to understand information (42%) than the adult (69%). While we found differences between the ability of finding and understanding drug information in both groups, the senior group had greater difficulties in understanding all kinds of drug information. They had significant difficulties to remember information after reading the patient leaflet and frequently failed to find proper information even though they were allowed to access freely to the leaflet during interviewing. Conclusion: To secure safe and effective use of drugs for the senior, it is necessary to develop drug leaflets for the senior.
This study aims to validate a web-based neuropsychological testing tool developed by Kwak(2007) and to suggest solutions to potential problems that can deteriorate its validity. When it targets a wider range of subjects, a web-based neuropsychological testing tool is challenged by high drop-out rates, lack of motivation, lack of interactivity with the experimenter, fear of computer, etc. As a possible solution to these threats, this study aims to redesign the user interface of a web-based attention testing tool through three phases of study. In Study 1, an extensive analysis of Kwak's(2007) attention testing tool was conducted to identify potential usability problems. The Heuristic Walkthrough(HW) method was used by three usability experts to review various design features. As a result, many problems were found throughout the tool. The findings concluded that the design of instructions, user information survey forms, task screen, results screen, etc. did not conform to the needs of users and their tasks. In Study 2, 11 guidelines for the design of web-based attention testing tools were established based on the findings from Study 1. The guidelines were used to optimize the design and organization of the tool so that it fits to the user and task needs. The resulting new design alternative was then implemented as a working prototype using the JAVA programming language. In Study 3, a comparative study was conducted to demonstrate the excellence of the new design of attention testing tool(named graphic style tool) over the existing design(named text style tool). A total of 60 subjects participated in user testing sessions where their error frequency, error patterns, and subjective satisfaction were measured through performance observation and questionnaires. Through the task performance measurement, a number of user errors in various types were observed in the existing text style tool. The questionnaire results were also in support of the new graphic style tool, users rated the new graphic style tool higher than the existing text style tool in terms of overall satisfaction, screen design, terms and system information, ease of learning, and system performance.
In a software testing domain, test case prioritization techniques improve the performance of regression testing, and arrange test cases in such a way that maximum available faults be detected in a shorter time. User-sessions and cookies are unique features of web applications that are useful in regression testing because they have precious information about the application state before and after making changes to software code. This approach is in fact a user-session based technique. The user session will collect from the database on the server side, and test cases are released by the small change configuration of a user session data. The main challenges are the effectiveness of Average Percentage Fault Detection rate (APFD) and time constraint in the existing techniques, so in this paper developed an intelligent framework which has three new techniques use to manage and put test cases in group by applying useful criteria for test case prioritization in web application regression testing. In dynamic weighting approach the hybrid criteria which set the initial weight to each criterion determines optimal weight of combination criteria by evolutionary algorithms. The weight of each criterion is based on the effectiveness of finding faults in the application. In this research the priority is given to test cases that are performed based on most common http requests in pages, the length of http request chains, and the dependency of http requests. To verify the new technique some fault has been seeded in subject application, then applying the prioritization criteria on test cases for comparing the effectiveness of APFD rate with existing techniques.
As the microelectronics technology is developed, new types of smart intelligent products are being emerged. OSD user interface is one of the critical factor in this kind of product, especially brown goods and information devices, as it is responsible for imput and output function. OSD is being treated as accompaniment to hardware in spite of its importance, and therefore is developed from only simple and separate usability testing based on performance measurement. This study propose a usability evaluation method of OSD based on subjective preference to support existing usability testing. The purpose of this analysis is to make clear what is important factor and how its preference level is from the user's viewpoint. The various attributes of OSD are clarified from user's questionaire and interview, and orthogonal array is generated with specified factor levels. The prototypes are generated from rapid prototyping tool and tested in natural simulation environment. The preference data which collected in this usability testing is analyzed with conjoint analysis module. This usability evaluation is not the final stage in user interface design process but the early planned and circulated stage.
Speech recognition is one of the user interface technologies in commanding and controlling any terminal such as a TV, PC, cellular phone etc. in a ubiquitous environment. In controlling a terminal, the mismatch between training and testing causes rapid performance degradation. That is, the mismatch decreases not only the performance of the recognition system but also the reliability of that. Therefore, the performance degradation due to the mismatch caused by the change of the environment should be necessarily compensated. Whenever the environment changes, environment adaptation is performed using the user's speech and the background noise of the changed environment and the performance is increased by employing the models appropriately transformed to the changed environment. So far, the research on the environment compensation has been done actively. However, the compensation method for the effect of distant-talking speech has not been developed yet. Thus, in this paper we apply MLLR-based environment adaptation to compensate for the effect of distant-talking speech and the performance is improved.
Information technology and the Internet have had a dramatic effect on education method and individual life. Universities and companies we making large investments in e-Learning applications but are hard to pressed to evaluate the success of their e-Learning systems. e-Learning can be seen as not only one of Internet based information systems which can provide education services but also one of teaching-teaming methods which can implement self-directed teaming. This paper tests the updated model of information system success proposed by Delone and McLean using a field study of a e-Learning. The five dimensions - information quality, system quality, service quality, user satisfaction, net benefit - of the updated model are parsimonious framework for organizing the e-learning success metrics identified in the literature. Questionaires are collected from 107 students who are enrolling a e-learning class using online survey. The model is tested using SPSS and LISREL. The results show that information quality and service quality are significant predictors of user satisfaction with the e-Learning system but system quality is not. Also user satisfaction is found to be a strong predictor of the learning performance. This strong association between user satisfaction and teaming performance suggests that user satisfaction may serve as a valid surrogate for teaming performance. Empirical testing of the updated DeLone & McLean model should therefore be extended to cover a wider variety of systems.
